The medical field has a very diverse group of careers that all go toward helping people live healthier, better, and longer lives. Women, specifically, need the service of one important person in the medical field, and that person would be a doctor known as an obstetrician/gynecologist or OBGYN. An obstetrician is a physician who has profitably finished specialized education and training in the handling of labor, pregnancy, and the time period right after childbirth. A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the well being of the female reproductive system, which encompasses the examination and the approach of diseases and disorders. Predominately, the first two years of medical school occur in the classroom, and the last two take place in a clinic or hospital. Programs in medical school include anatomy, pathology, and biochemistry. During the third and fourth years, students rotate through various departments in a clinic, surgery center, dispensary, or a hospital, including surgery, pediatrics, internal medicine, and OBGYN. The last or fourth year of medical school predominantly covers OBGYN clinical electives, for instance high risk obstetrics, ambulatory OBGYN, and endocrinology. During the fourth year you register for a residency program through a computer matching system. The match helps select your top choices with different residency programs. This is the toughest part of the entire education process because usually there are only about six or seven open spots. The residency program lasts for four years and this is when you specialize in gynecology. During this time you will rotate your steps in areas such as reproductive endocrinology, obstetrics, gynecology, obstetrics, ultrasonography, and gynecologic oncology. Once you complete your residency you are then qualified to take your board exams. In this article I am going to narrow it down for you between a Physician and a Physician Assistant and I am going to tell you why I would prefer being a Physician Assistant over the highly prestigious Physician career. I interviewed two women who have been previously pregnant in order to evaluate how the ideas in the book translate into real-life experiences.
According to the CDC, “In 2012, preterm birth affected more than 450,000 babies—that's 1 of every 9 infants born in the United States. Preterm-related causes of death together accounted for 35% of all infant deaths in 2010, more than any other single cause. Preterm birth is also a leading cause of long-term neurological disabilities in children. Preterm birth costs the U.S. health care system more than $26 billion in 2005” (Preterm Birth, 2014). These statistics are alarming, but with the proper prenatal care and education, premature birth rates can be reduced. The student nurse’s health promotion project focused on educating women and their families about proper prenatal care. According to the journal “Prevention of Premature Birth: Do Pediatricians Have a Role?” there are many secondary and tertiary preventions related to premature birth. Some secondary preventions are utilized scoring systems for identifying high-risk factors, bed rest, decreased strenuous physical activity and stress, smoking cessation programs, and nutritional supplementation programs. Tertiary prevention is directed at stopping the progress of labor with tocolytic drugs while enhancing lung maturation with steroids, and to also treat premature rupture of membranes and premature labor with antibiotics. An ob-gyn is what you probably refer to as just delivering babies but it’s a lot more then that. An obstetrician has to do with giving patients medicine, making sure a patient and the baby are healthy for a long nine months, being the one their for the delivery process, etc. To be an obstetrician/ gynecology, you have to go to school for quite some years but not just that also training classes. When in college learning to be an ob-gyn, you get to experience a lot of hands on things which is always fun! Last but not least before I begin to explain lots of things about an ob-gyn is that being an obstetrician takes a lot of work and effort but it entertains me more than any other career.
Over the years birthing methods have changed a great deal. When technology wasn’t so advanced there was only one method of giving birth, vaginally non-medicated. However, in today’s society there are now more than one method of giving birth. In fact, there are three methods: Non-medicated vaginal delivery, medicated vaginal delivery and cesarean delivery, also known as c-section. In the cesarean delivery there is not much to prepare for before the operation, except maybe the procedure of the operation. A few things that will be discussed are: the process of cesarean delivery, reasons for this birthing method and a few reasons for why this birthing method is used. Also a question that many women have is whether or not they can vaginally deliver after a cesarean delivery, as well as the risks and benefits if it. Delivering a child by a c-section also has a few advantages and disadvantages for both the mother and child; this will also be discussed in more depth a bit later.
