The medical field has a very diverse group of careers that all go toward helping people live healthier, better, and longer lives. Women, specifically, need the service of one important person in the medical field, and that person would be a doctor known as an obstetrician/gynecologist or OBGYN. An obstetrician is a physician who has profitably finished specialized education and training in the handling of labor, pregnancy, and the time period right after childbirth. A gynecologist is a doctor who specializes in the well being of the female reproductive system, which encompasses the examination and the approach of diseases and disorders. Predominately, the first two years of medical school occur in the classroom, and the last two take place in a clinic or hospital. Programs in medical school include anatomy, pathology, and biochemistry. During the third and fourth years, students rotate through various departments in a clinic, surgery center, dispensary, or a hospital, including surgery, pediatrics, internal medicine, and OBGYN. The last or fourth year of medical school predominantly covers OBGYN clinical electives, for instance high risk obstetrics, ambulatory OBGYN, and endocrinology. During the fourth year you register for a residency program through a computer matching system. The match helps select your top choices with different residency programs. This is the toughest part of the entire education process because usually there are only about six or seven open spots. The residency program lasts for four years and this is when you specialize in gynecology. During this time you will rotate your steps in areas such as reproductive endocrinology, obstetrics, gynecology, obstetrics, ultrasonography, and gynecologic oncology. Once you complete your residency you are then qualified to take your board exams.
