Social Workers play a very important role in the society. Social Workers are the first to reach out to the client when a problem occurs. They provide clients with hope and encourage them to have a better life. Social workers must make the role of their work clear when they are approached by a client. Their job is to assist the client to know why they need help and where they can get it. Social Workers also unite clients with services, resources and opportunities, which provide them with the help they need.
There are various steps Social Workers must do before performing any cases or looking for any solutions for a client. A Social Worker would look at the first visit to the clinic that the client has visited, which client have given them and information of their history which includes family background, social history, developmental history, and history of the peculiar difficulty. This way, they can suggest what treatment is good for him or her. For instance, a Psychiatric Social Worker would find out the cause of the difficulty he or she is going through. To be a successful Social Worker, they have to do writing assessment, making referrals to other agencies, counseling support and many more. A Social Worker has certain education requirement. A Bachelor’ degree in Social Work (B.S.W) is required for Clerical and related field such as psychology or sociology. For those who want to further their education for position which involves psychological recommendations or assessments, Master’ in Social Work (M.S.W) is required (Princeton review). According to the article “Career: Social Work,” “all states have strict licensing requirements for social workers, and additional professional certifications are available from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)”.
In the context of mental health, the social workers are important because they take the role of linking the services available within mental health and other services provided by the Local Authority. Due to their varied practical knowledge, they can signpost and guide the service users on different matters pertaining to their entitlement to housing, care, and other benefits.
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.
The social work profession at the simplest level, is providing service and achieving social justice for our community. There are various ways in which social workers can do this, ranging from simply providing necessary support to getting children out of dangerous situations. I always knew that my calling was to help and advocate for populations in my community that were vulnerable and often forgotten.
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. The profession is dramatically subject to affection by societal change, thus demanding social workers have a duty to be up to date with the latest developments in understanding how and why people get to the point of requiring social work intervention, and how best to prevent and cater for it.
