Companies and organizations have senior executives who take on more than their role as top managers by being organizational leaders for their companies. Organizational leaders work to mold businesses into positive images that they envision for companies by being role models and using positive behaviors and characteristics that will help achieve organizational goals. Leadership styles vary between managers, and many of the best leaders have their own unique style that they use to inspire others to do their best in whatever capacity the company needs them in. Not all managers or executives are effective leaders, and some senior executives may have a leadership style that actually has a negative impact on the company. In order for the company to be profitable and excel, unsuccessful leadership styles should not be tolerated.
The COO, or Chief Operating Officer, at the organization I work for has a very charismatic presence. He is the type of leader that made employees want to excel while performing their duties for the company. His leadership style is a mixture of directive and participative leadership. Directive leadership is a leadership style where the leader lets employees know precisely what is expected of them, gives them specific guidelines for performing tasks, schedules work, sets standards of performance, and makes sure that people follow standard rules and regulations. The COO has made employees aware of company goals and expectations by issuing monthly newsletters outlining these points. Keeping these goals in mind, employees are more willing to excel to help reach these achievements for the company. In conclusion, there are a lot of factors that go into an organization’s success as well as a successful leader. An organizational leader needs to be able to guide their company towards achieving goals that may seem challenging but will be substantial in expanding business opportunities. Employees are influenced by the actions that their organizational executives make, and the best leaders are able to positively push their employees towards success to improve themselves and their organization. Not every executive is meant to be a leader, but executives should always seek ways to improve their leadership styles and strain to make a positive impact on their subordinates and their companies.

A leader is a make up of many different attributes and qualities. An effective Leader encompasses all of the attributes which go along with facilitating ideas and allowing an organization to grow and flourish, as well as inspiring and motivating those he or she oversees to do the same. A Leader has the ability and almost the reflex action to surface when it is time for a difficult task to be accomplished or a difficult decision to be made. Leadership may be a type of management but a manager is not always a leader. “Leadership is the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible.”
Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
Many definitions exist on what leadership is. Despite the many differences in definitions, they all describe the leader as someone who influences others. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. These characteristics will create a positive workplace environment that results in an increase in productivity. Leadership is not defined by titles or salary. Leaders must acquire their skills and continue to improve on them through learning. Good leaders provide a vision and help motivate others to make that vision happen. The leader must be effective and successful in creating a strong institution.
Leadership is defined as the action of guiding an individual or group of people. Effective leaders shape the behavior and thought process of the individuals around them. As a result, the success of an organization is often impacted by the leadership style and approach of its leaders. Even when engaging with multiple people, impactful leaders maintain their own style of leadership but occasionally change their approach based on the motivational needs of each individual. However, regardless of the style, leadership within an organization is designed to drive the performance of their employees and it is done through proficient communication. This guidance influences the culture of an organization, which subsequently, helps to shape its leaders.
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.
Hasenfeld (2010) states “Task Oriented” leadership focuses on the planning, directing, implementing, budgeting, and decision making. Internally, making sure each department is operating effectively, and the mission set forth by the organization is upheld. Externally, they use their resources to scope the success of other organizations; then plan, and set goals that will elevate them above the competition. The task oriented leader, is less concerned with how the decisions made, affect the employee’s; instead they focus on making decisions based on what keeps the company moving in a positive direction. The styles of leadership to be discussed are transactional, transformational, and “level 5.” The leadership styles will be explored based on the scenario information. There will also be a theoretical assumption used to show company changes that will occur after Executive A retires. From the information presented, the changes could occur immediately or gradually depending on the length of the transition period.
Reviewing this chapter as whole, I noticed that there is no fixed approach mentioned towards a leadership style, rather it suggests that range of different leadership style must be adapted based on the situation. Furthermore, I found out that this chapter lacked some useful information which should have been discussed e.g. it did not emphasis much about leadership styles and strategies in a service industry. However, some distinctive traits successful leader must have were highlighted such as good interpersonal skills, sociability and dominance. Some philosophers believe that leaders are born as a leader which perhaps I don’t really agree to, not all successful leaders were born as a leader. Leadership style can however be adapted in response to situation and needs of the business environment.
Inspire. Effective leaders inspire those around them. They achieve this by setting goals and aiming to achieve them as efficiently as possible. A leader's passion should be contagious, and their energy should affect others around them and should change their approach. A leader's dedication, commitment, and ability should motivate others not just to do as their leaders do but also to believe that what they’ve set out to achieve is within their reach. Effective leaders use themes, mottoes, and symbols to inspire the people around them to maintain their focus and complete all necessary tasks.
Leaders are the individuals who help to create options and opportunities. They help in identifying the choices and solve the problems. They build commitment and coalitions. Leaders do this by inspiring others and working along with them to construct the shared vision of the possibilities and commitments of a better group, organization or community. They engage the followers in such a way that most of the followers become leaders in their own right. Organizations have leaders who are effective and ineffective. Many of us want to be leaders but, do we have what it takes to be effective or are we going to be ineffective. Leaders are people who build their organization and employees up. Ineffective leaders are those who only care about getting a check. This paper will discuss effective and ineffective leaders.
