The Ways to Establish a Small Business
Small business is defined as an independently or privately owned business, usually in the form of a sole proprietorship or a partnership and is not dominant in its field (U.S Department of Treasury, 2010). It is limited to have no more than 50 employees or 1500 employees for manufacturing industries, and a turnover less than 5.6 million pounds (HM Revenue & Customs, n.d.). Throughout the years, small businesses have grown significantly, with over 543, 000 new businesses start each month (Nazar, 2013). It is undeniable that almost everyone wants to start and have their own business, even a small one. Who would not want to have the pride of having built something of their own and profits flowing into their bank account at the end of each and every month? (Dahl, 2011). In order to make such an “easy life” come true, there are several steps that must be taken carefully. There are plenty of ways to establish a small business but the most important ones are searching for ideas, drawing a business plan, determining the amount of capital, deciding the target market, building the business’ own brand and completing all the necessary legalities (Open Government License, 2013).
All business plans begin with an idea. A small business does not require large amount of capitals or investments, it only needs one brilliant and creative idea. It then depends on how we make it a target for a business strategy and plan. An idea has to be realistic, so that it can be turned into a real product or service. One needs to get over “the company name thing” and must not waste time to come up with a perfect company name. Instead, start digging and exploring for ideas he or she has in mind. . A small business can be defined as a legal entity consisting of very few employees. Establishing a business such as a proprietorship is the least complicated among business structures. Proprietorships also have a major advantage over other business structures with regards to filing taxes. Profits generated by the business are taxed at individual tax rates thus avoiding the double taxation incurred by corporations. Local economies, government offices, schools and the unemployed benefit greatly from the growth stimulated by these companies. The taxes collected from small businesses and job creation makes small business a vital part of the community.
The venture to be the owner of an accounting and tax service provider is not a small task, and you have realized the challenges that many experience in starting their own business. Small, medium enterprises (SMEs) are largest types business in the world, making up an estimated 99.7% of business. According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) there are nearly five million existing businesses in the UK as of 2013. SMEs are a key contributor towards economic growth in terms of creating more employment, stimulating innovation and promoting social unity. SMEs are responsible for 47% of private sector employment, yet despite such global present there is still no agreed definition of a SME (Storey 1994). Bolton (1971) attempted to define them through a statistical and economic analysis. Classifications which are based on criteria, such as number of employees or annual turnover, however, do not remain consistent across borders. Given their size, smaller companies tend to be more intent on survival rather than expansion and profit maximisation. Smaller sized firms have always felt that the current reporting framework for IFRS is tailored more for the needs of larger companies and that the heavy cost burden it imposes upon them may not be entirely justified. In response to these concerns, the IASB subsequently issued the IFRS for Small and Medium-sized Entities (IFRS for SMEs) in July 2009. This standard offers an alternative framework which can be adopted by entities in place of the already extant full set of IFRSs or local national requirement standards.(Holt 2010) This essay will critically evaluate the impact of the IFRS for SME’s and whether or not it stands as the most suitable framework available for SMEs to use.
