The video documentary titled Warriors of the French Foreign Legion, opened with the 1991 Gulf War. The American forces lead and assault on Iraq; 100 hour later the Iraqis were defeated and Kuwait was liberated. The Persian Gulf war consisted of 30 nations; out of the 30 nations the French Foreign Legion stood apart due to secrecy and was littered with mystic. The mission of the Foreign Legion during the Gulf War was to guard the collations left flank. The collation forces were commanded by General Norman Schwarzkopf. At the end of the Gulf War, General Schwarzkopf was given one of the highest awards held by the Foreign Legion, and became a member of the Foreign Legion. General Schwarzkopf stated that he was given a card with a phone number on it and told if he is in trouble in any place in the world to call the number and the Legion would come to his aide. This is an example of how loyal and dedicated the Foreign Legion is.
Very few know that the legion still exists, with even fewer having actually served in the Foreign Legion. Although the Foreign Legion is technically part of the French regular army, only foreigners are allowed to enlist. Anyone holding a French passport is not allowed. Colonel Bouquin, who commands the elite 2nd parachute regiment stated that the only difference between the regular French army and the Legion, is the Legion accepts foreigners and does not allow women: same rules, equipment, structure, and organization. General Bernard Grail is the highest ranking officer in the Foreign Legion explained the reason they do not allow women is because of their training regiment and the day to day living requirements that just won’t allow it.
