Walt Disney, the creator of the Walt Disney Company, was famous for his ideas. He was named “an idea man” because of his ability to think of great ideas. His ideas are what ultimately allowed him to be successful in his career. Disney started his career as a hands-on cartoonist, but as his company grew, he became a full time manager, organizer, inspirer and innovator.

Disney was often called a conceptual innovator because of his ability to simplify problems by synthesizing old ideas in ways that no one had ever thought of before. Disney often inspired himself by past works and sometimes borrowed ideas and ended up coming up with new and bold ideas. He would then make plans to achieve these ideas, and delegated the work accordingly to assistants.

As a conceptual innovator, Disney did all of his best work at a young age. Another conceptual innovator, Bill Gates, founded the company that became Microsoft at the age of 19. Disney, compared to Gates, also did his best work at an early age. At the age of 22, Disney created “Steamboat Willie” which became the first popular animated film with sound.

Disney came a very long way in his career. When Disney was 9 years old, his father sold their family farm that had failed. Consequently, his father bought a paper route and ended up putting Disney to work. Disney would rise early, in the darkness to get his allotment of 50 papers. He would return home around 6:00, take a short nap and then wake back up to eat his breakfast. Out of this darkness came Disney’s vision of an escape to a utopian world. This vision ultimately led to his greatest animations, movies and theme parks.
