Walt Disney is a legend, a folk hero of the 20th century. His worldwide popularity was based on imagination, optimism, creation, and self-made success in America. Walt Disney did more to touch the hearts, minds, and emotions of millions of kids and adults than any other person. He brought us closer to the future, while telling us of the past. It is certain, that there will never be such as great a man, as Walt Disney.
Walter Elias Disney was born December 5, 1901 in Chicago Illinois. Walt was one of five children, four boys and a girl. After Walt's birth, the Disney family moved to Marceline, Missouri. Walt lived out most of his childhood here. Walt had a very early interest in drawing, and art. When he was seven years old, he sold small sketches, and drawings to nearby neighbors. His interest in creating enduring art forms took shape when he talked his sister, Ruth, into helping him paint the side of the family's house with tar.
Close to the Disney family farm, there were Santa Fe Railroad tracks that crossed the countryside. Often Walt would put his ear against the tracks, to listen for approaching trains. Walt's uncle, Mike Martin, was a train engineer. Walt worked a summer job with the railroad, selling newspapers, popcorn, and sodas to travelers. Walt would often try to recapture the freedom he felt when aboard those trains, by building his own miniature train set
Besides his other interests, Walt attended McKinley High School in Chicago. There, Disney divided his attention between drawing and photography, and contributing to the school paper. At night he attended the Academy of Fine Arts, to better his drawing abilities.

Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5th, 1901 in Hermosa, Illinois. Together, he and his brother would come to cofound Walt Disney Productions. Disney grew up in Marceline, Missouri with his mother, father, three brothers, and one sister. In 1911, they moved to Kansas City. Due to his Uncle Mike Martin’s career as a train engineer, Disney developed his love of trains. In 1917, the Disney family moved to Chicago where Disney attended McKinley high School. He took drawing and photography classes as well as drew for the school newspaper. He also took classes at the Chicago Art institute. At the young age of sixteen, he dropped out of school. He originally wanted to join the army but, after being rejected for being underage, instead joined the Red Cross. He was sent to France and to drive an ambulance there for one year.

They gave him five-hundred dollars,so he was able to open the Disney Brothers Studio. Disney hired a distributor to publicise his Alice Comedies. Once the Alice Comedies became popular he expanded his studio, and made Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. After the release of the character he had problems with his distributor. When the problems with his distributor ended Disney, Roy, and Ub started creating the character Mickey Mouse. Later, that year they released the film Steamboat Willie. Once the film became a huge success Walt Disney had problems with his ne distributor. Pat Powers wanted to take ownership of the character Mickey Mouse. For larger salaries most of his employees left, including Ub Iwerks. Pat also thought Disney would follow and give ownership to Mickey Mouse to him for a larger salary. Instead, Disney and his brother Roy bought out their contract and kept their rights to Mickey Mouse. The Disney Brothers Studio then became Walt Disney Studios. During the time of the Great Depression Disney experimented with color and sound. For his work during that time he won two Academy Awards. In 1932 he opened the Disney Art School and then built a studio in Burbank, California. Later that year he released the films Bambi, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Pinocchio. In 1941 his employees went on strike for better working conditions. The U.S. army then started using his studio to train and study propaganda films. Walt then focused on making patriotic films because of his government contract. In 1952 Walt Disney starts thinking of building Disneyland. In creating Disney stories and movies, Walt Disney demonstrated that he was a true visionary. His acclaimed imagination wasn’t always apparent, though. It has been said that Walt was fired from a job at the Kansas City Star newspaper because of a lack of creativity (Brown). Years later, Disney purchased ABC, which owned the Kansas City Star. How ironic that he was fired from a company because he wasn’t creative enough and then ended up owning it because of his creativity. Walt Disney is one of the most significant individuals of our time. His distinguished business acumen and abounding creativity enthused children for generations.
On December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Elias and Flora Disney gave birth to a 4th son Walter Elias. In 1906 the Disney family relocated to Marceline, Missouri, where Walt found interest in drawing and painting pictures as well as starting his entrepreneurship journeys by marketing his works to friends, family and neighbors. In 1911 financial pressures and health stresses for Elias required him to sell their farm and transfer to Kansas City. Here Walt and his brother Roy helped their family financially by delivering newspapers. In addition to Walt assisting on the newspaper routes he attended Benton Grammar school and on the weekend attend the Kansas Art Institute to cultivate his creative skills. Shortly after Walt graduated from Benton Grammar School, the family moved back to Chicago, where Walt attended high school and joined the school newspaper staff contributing by drawing cartoons for it. Walt attended McKinley High School for a brief time before deciding to join the Red Cross Ambulance Corps. In 1919 Walt moved back to Kansas City after a brief stay in Chicago after serving for the Red Cross Ambulance Corp. In Kansas City Walt began working for the Kansas City Slide Company developing advertisements, gaining animation experience, then eventually left to start his own company Laugh O-Graham Films. Walt created his first series of short films called “Alice’s Wonderland” while owner operating his first business. Unfortunately at this time Walt lacked some business talents, therefore Laugh O Grahams life span was only approximately a year and a half.
