Before 1887, people relied on spectacles as their main source of vision correction. It is unknown when spectacles came to existence, however, the “oldest known lens were found in the ruins of ancient Nineveh” (Drewry, 2001). Spectacles were magnifying glasses, used to make objects appear larger than its actual size. Not only were spectacles magnifying glasses, they were also used by the Chinese to protect your eyes from evil forces (Drewry, 2001).
The majority of Europeans were self-conscious about wearing spectacles in public. Spectacles, on the other hand, were popular in Spain. All classes in Spain wore spectacles because it “made you look more important and dignified,” (Drewry, 2001). In the 1840’s, spectacles were worn as an accessory by both men and women throughout Europe.
Spectacles gave a person good vision if a person had a regular cornea and normal astigmatism. However, if a person had “corneal astigmatism or diseases and abnormalities of the cornea” the productivity of the spectacles were minimal (Siviglia, 2010). Little did people know that contact lenses would be developed and help individuals who did not have regular corneas and normal astigmatism.
Contact lenses were first introduced during the Renaissance by Leonardo Da Vinci. Da Vinci was interested in the human eye as well as the human body. His purpose for contact lenses was not to help a person with vision problems, instead, Da Vinci was looking for a way he could manipulate the cornea’s power (Swaby, 2011). Through Da Vinci’s experiment, placing his face into a bowl filled with water, he discovered that he was able to see clearly for the first time (Siviglia, 2010). Da Vinci then created a “contact lens with a funnel on one side so water can be poured in...

In the novel Tangerine, Paul Fisher wore huge glasses to help with his vision. In the novel Paul said, “But right after the eclipse, I was wearing these thick lenses that I now call my regular glasses” (Bloor 34). Erik ruined Paul’s eyes by holding his eyes wide open for Vincent to spray paint Erik replies after, “ Arthur takes care of my light work” (Bloor 212). One day, Tino came over to Paul’s house to work on a project. Erik came home to find Paul and Tino outside in the backyard.
Optometrists have accepted vision therapy, which is a medical treatment for optical muscle disabilities, as a feasible treatment used for eye related problems; claiming the treatment can strengthen vision and give the patient the opportunity to understand visuals quicker and clearer (Press). Vision therapy originated in the 1950s and over the past 25 years, has gained popularity, mainly because of new technological innovations in the field of treatment. Generally, vision therapy is prescribed as a measure mainly for people between the ages of 3 and 18. With the results from a comprehensive series of eye tests, the optometrist can work with the patient using special instruments—prisms, filters, occluders, and eye lenses—and strengthen the eye muscles, thus improving sight. According to optometrists in favor of vision therapy, these methods of treatment using these instruments function as safer routes to repair eye disabilities. Although vision therapy can yield favorable results, the practice as a treatment for innate eye disabilities has been in hot debate lately; as it can exceed $8000 and insurance companies do not cover the treatment. For decades, insurance companies have refused to accept vision therapy as a legitimate method for repairing eyesight (Boink). Concomitant with lack of insurance, the cost for a full treatment can exceed $8000, and doctors cannot guarantee a successful outcome. Recently, parents of children with eye related disabilities, such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (cross-eye), and doctors have attempted to cooperate with public schools to allow families access to school-funded doctors to practice vision therapy. With a tight budget, most schools cannot afford to supply vision therapy, and a...
My interest in the career of optometry stems from my first experience in the optometry office to receive my first pair of glasses when I was in middle school. I distinctly remember the moment when my optometrist slipped my new glasses over my eyes for the first time. Suddenly, everything in the room came into sharp, clear focus. I knew that the glasses would help me see the board in school, but I was astonished to find that I could see small details about the room, as it had never before occurred to me that I should have been able to see these details. I was also surprised that I was even able to see the expressions on the faces of people who were standing far away from me. It was one of the most incredible, freeing, and empowering moments of my life. As I walked out of the optometry office, I felt

No, not "Why am I going to class so early?" but "Why do I need these contacts?" With this project I will attempt to explain the basics of vision and corrective lenses, as I, myself, finally learn the reason for sticking my finger in my eye every morning.

Optometry involves of a combination of intricate practical skills and academia allowing the improvement of an individual’s vision as an outcome changing their quality of life. I would feel privileged to gain the opportunity to study Optometry enabling me to improve the ocular health and vision of others as it would be a valuable contribution to the society.
Although telescopes has been around for several hundreds of years, there has been great discrepancy as to who invented it first. Here is one authors opinion. Lippershey was a Dutch spectacle marker during the early 17th century (approximately 1600). He was one of the first who created the "looker" (now called telescope) by placing two pieces of lenses together. The discovery that placing lenses together can magnify images were made by children who took Lippershey's spectacles and looked at a distant church tower.
Ah, but there’s the rub. Sometimes I wear them, sometimes I don’t. I wear glasses when I read, because contacts dry out my eyes too fast. I wear glasses when I relax, or when I take a shower. On the other hand, I wear contacts when I play sports or get a haircut. So I guess my problem is simply this: I’m both glasses and no glasses.

The creation of the first wearable pair of eyeglasses is credited to Salvino D'Armate in Italy around the year 1284 (Bellis). Despite numerous improvements made to this original model, the eyeglasses remained an elementary piece of technology that provided the sole form of vision correction at that time. This was the case century after century. Leonardo da Vinci left us with the first sketches and descriptions of contact lenses in 1508 (CLC). The credit for developing the first corneal contact lens is given to Dr. Thomas Young in 1801. He created a one quarter inch long glass tube filled with water which had a microscope lens fitted on the end (Hartstein). It wasn’t until the late 19th century, however, that the first crude, but tolerable pair of contact lenses were introduced (CLC). Since this first medieval pair, the contact lens has been improved upon time after time. From the introduction of using plastics in contact lens production to the soft, gas permeable, daily wear, disposable lens...
