The ultimate engine of economic growth is new technology. According to economists, the growth of output per capita is a fairly recent phenomenon. This can be attributed to all the new technology people have discovered in the past few centuries, causing output growth to surge and accelerate faster than ever before in history. The result of all these ingenious, innovative inventions has been a total revolution in the way people live their lives.
After examining the multitude of invention descriptions on the four websites and considering from other sources, I have concluded that the telephone, printing press, automobile, airplane and the computer have contributed most to economic growth.
First and foremost, the invention of the telephone is ranked number one among my five choices. From my own judgment, this would seem to contribute the most to economic growth. Until the invention of this magnificent device, messengers often had to be sent long distances to deliver information. Intercontinental and overseas communication would take months or even years. From an economic standpoint, companies could relay information between themselves and others instantaneously and make decisions and react to internal and external factors extremely quickly. Essentially, it accelerated the world economy.
Now, the second among my choices was the printing press invented during the Renaissance period by Johannes Gutenberg. This item revolutionized printing, “making it simple and more affordable” (http://www.enchantedlearning.com/inventors/indexp.shtml). This would enable information to become widely available among the populace. Although it may not have occurred right away, this would increase the education among a society and harvest more educated people with more potential.
Number three on the list is the automobile. This invention would enable people to traverse large distances in dramatically less time than ever before. Companies could deliver goods and services much quicker, people had much more control of where to go then previously with the steam engine. Also with the invention of the automobile, the horse and carriage and other modes of primitive transportation have become obsolete. This new technology ultimately would accelerate the speed of the economy and increase economic growth.
The invention of the airplane by the Wright brothers changed the world, so number four would be the airplane. Again, like the automobile, people would be able to travel great distances in so much less time, and eventually intercontinental travel would be possible. The invention of this enables companies expand across the globe and people to travel with more ease.
In “The Sniper” the conflict is man vs man, which means main character is tasked with killing his enemy, but it proves to be quite a challenge. Even though there were many challenges the sniper followed through with his job and persevered even after he was shot in the arm. Wanting to kill his enemy, stay alive, and be one step closer to ending the war was his main goals. Being brave, he took off his hat, placed it on his gun, and raised it above the edge of the roof. Instantly the enemy shot at it and the sniper, pretending to be dead, waited until the enemy got up for him to shoot him. He did some quick thinking and, with determination, handled the conflict quite well.
The sentence, “Placing a cigarette between his lips, he struck the match, inhaled the smoke hurriedly and put out the light.” demonstrates that the Republican sniper is exposing himself to snipers surrounding him, since there was visible light from igniting the match (1). In other words, a sniper that is waiting patiently to eliminate his victim, the Free Stater sniper, will notice the cigarette being lighted and will immediately shoot the source of the light. When the story continues, it is detected that the Free Stater sniper notices a light source, and quickly takes aim at it, believing the light source leads to an individual. This is noticeable because the Republican sniper is nearly dead a few seconds after lighting the cigarette, since the Free Stater sniper fired his gun after seeing suspicious activity of a match being illuminated. Also, the sentence shows that the Republican sniper did not presume that a possibility of his consequential action’s is that an enemy is going to shoot him, since he obviously exposed himself for others to detect. Even though the action of lighting the cigarette was not the most consequential action, it still caused a drastic situation for the main character. However, O’Flaherty’s description is not the only craft move he develops to convey the theme, action, without thought, to the reader. He also uses suspense
Having an afternoon smoke becomes a lousy choice for an Irish Republican soldier in the short story “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty because it almost costs him his life. A Republican sniper lights his cigarette when moments later, a bullet whizzes past his body. After some shooting in the street, the Free State sniper from across the street shoots again, this time the Republican sniper is wounded in the arm. The Republican sniper nurses his wound and tricks the enemy sniper into thinking he is dead. Armed with a revolver, the Republican sniper then kills the other sniper once the Free State sniper moves out from his hideaway. The remaining sniper begins to wonder who this other man is. The Sniper demonstrates resourcefulness, battle weariness,
In the story “The sniper”, the sniper face an external conflict and an internal conflict. His external conflict was the enemy sniper. He saw an old woman heading towards the man in the turret. The old woman was pointing at the sniper. Sniper thought
Mr. Liam O’Flaherty portrayed the theme of the short story, “The Sniper”, by implying that you have to do what you have to do. When in war, Soldiers must remove all emotions so that nothing can hold them back from doing their job. If a soldier is placed in a situation where he must kill to stay alive he needs to be
Improvements in agriculture, transportation, and communication between 1790 and 1860 were the stepping stones for a greater America. From the cotton gin, to the steamboat, to the telegraph, new innovations were appearing all over. America had finally begun to spread its wings and fly.
In this year Henry Ford created the first affordable, combustion engine car called the Model-T. The creation of the Model-T changed the lives of every American. Vehicles were looked at as a way of freedom and excitement. Soon after, every household in America had a car. The demand for vehicles sparked a whole new industry, creating jobs, more revenues and improving the American economy in every way. With so many vehicles on the roads, roads needed to become bigger and better which spawned a nation wide road construction. This also created more jobs and strengthened the economy even further. The Sniper exhibits qualities that are both experienced and amateur. O’Flaherty describes the Sniper as “a man who is used to looking at death”, from which we can infer that the sniper has seen many deaths, since a person who is exposed frequently to death gradually grows senseless to it. In the passage, “There was a flash and a bullet whizzed over his head. He dropped immediately.”, we can tell from the “dropped immediately” that the sniper has exceedingly quick reflexes, something usually apparent in those who are experienced in the techniques of war.
As a socialistic society we live in we find ourselves in positions were conflicts arise between friends or family. 'The Sniper'; was written by Liam O ' Flaherty to express a subtle yet powerful opinion on such a conflict. With references this essay will analyse the short story bringing to light the structure used to contribute to the theme.

As the late 19th century progressed, technological ideas and inventions began to thrive. The notion that technology would impact life as we know it was an unbelievable idea to comprehend. People had no idea that something so simple such as the light bulb would become so vital to them and for century’s to come. Inventions such as, the typewriter, barbed wire, telephone, Kodak camera, and electric stove were created, however the major inventions created and use tremendously today are, Medicine, Electricity, and Transportation.
...d finished products. Second, the railroad created hundreds of thousands of new jobs for both railroad workers and miners. Third, the railroads boosted England’s agricultural and fishing industries, which could transport their products to distant cities. Finally, by making travel easier, railroads encouraged country people to take distant city jobs. Also, railroads lured city dwellers to resorts in the countryside.
“The Industrial Revolution was another of those extraordinary jumps forward in the story of civilization”. This quote by Stephen Gardiner pretty much summarizes a long, laborious period of time into a single 15-word quote. Urbanization, industrialization, and contamination, all formed part of this significant period of time in European history. Nevertheless, one aspect that better symbolized the Industrial Revolution was the sudden surge of new inventions and machinery that begun during the Industrial Revolution. Among the numerous inventions that appeared during the Industrial Revolution, the spinning jenny, the steam locomotive, and the steam engine were three of the most remarkable. The spinning jenny, steam locomotive, and steam engine were inventions that greatly enhanced all types of industries in the Industrial Revolution.
