Taiwan is an island located about 100 miles from China. It was originally part of China. But in 1949, the communists seized Mainland China forcing the nationalists to retreat to
Taiwan. From then on, Taiwan is also known as Free
China. The leaders of Republic of China, (Free China) hoped someday that the communists will be driven out of
China. Therefore, they start to build Taiwan as a military base for such purpose. However, their dreams were never accomplished, instead, their efforts turned Taiwan into a economic powerful country. This is also known as the
Taiwan Miracle. There is another interesting information about Taiwan's name. Despite Free China, Taiwan also has two other names, "Taiwan" (the one we call it) and
"Formosa". Let's talk about "Taiwan" first. "Taiwan" means
"terraced bay" to the mountain tribal people who originally lives in Taiwan. When the immigrants from China migrated to this island 3 hundreds years ago, they kept hearing the tribal people calling (the place where the Chinese landed)
"Taiwan". Therefore, they assumed that the island is
"Taiwan". Formosa, on the other hand, was called by the
Portuguese sailors in the 1600s. It means "beautiful island".
Therefore, there are still people referring Taiwan as
Formosa when they try to beautify Taiwan today. Taiwan is a sub-tropical country that that is warm most of the year.
The Tropic of Cancer passes through Taiwan in the southern part. Therefore, snow is unusual to most the
Taiwanese here. But there are some places up in the high mountains that do get cold enough to snow. Because the land is hot and humid, it is the best for growing rice and other farm products. The farmers in north can grow two crops of rice a year in the north and three crops a year in the south. There are mostly mountains in the north part of
Taiwan while plate farmland in the south. The government of the Republic of China has some similarities to the government of the United States. The government is based on a Constitution and there is a President and Vice
President. ROC has a National Assembly instead of a
Congress and there are five branches of the government, legislative, executive, judicial, examination, and control.
There are three major political parties and some other lesser known ones. The best party that control many resources of the country is the KMT, (Kuomintang), also known as the Nationalists. The second best party is DPP,
(Democratic Progressive Party). And New Party. Well, from here I have to tell you that I am a partisan of New
Party and I will interprete the three parties in MY WAY.
Alright, let me give you detailed descriptions of the three
China is the story of a County that tried to contain their citizens from the outside world, tried to make the people work for basically no pay, set up inhuman laws, and other terrible deeds. But the scary thing is that they got away with it. The government is too powerful to be questioned and it will stay that until people find out about these . That is the only way China will be a fair and just country.
In China there are three political structures: the bureaucracy, the state, and the communist party. In the bureaucracy lie the president, the premier, the state council standing committee, and the state council; in the state there is the National people’s Congress Standing Committee and the National People’s Congress; and in the communist party is the General Secretary Standing Committee Polit...
From 100 CE to 600 CE the Chinese had many cultural and political life changes and continuities. A political change was in the end of the Classical Chinese period when the Han Dynasty fell. A cultural change during 100 CE to 600 CE was the paper invention that led to passing down cultural rituals. Not only were there changes but there was also continuities in the Chinese political and cultural life. An example of a cultural continuity is the increasing power of Buddhism. A political continuity is the ruler of the Chinese wanting the people to be protected with for instance The Great Wall of China.
One representative is elected from each province for every 400,000 people, with a minimum of ten representatives from each. There are approximately 3000 representatives in China's Congress. China also has a federal government. The country is divided into Provinces, which are divided into even smaller divisions of several types. The Communist party controls the government. Other parties do exist but the Communists Party is in control of the government.
Before getting into the analysis of the present situation, let’s review the history of Taiwan and the intertwined relationship between the PRC and the ROC. Taiwan island has only been seen as a significant place by a few emperors throughout the Chinese history. It has officially become a part of the Chinese territory since the Ming dynasty in17th century after the Dutch colonists were extruded from the island. Taiwan was then taken over by Japan in 1895, when the “Treaty of Shimonoseki” was signed after the defeat of the Qing military in the First Sino-Japanese War. Then the Republic of China regained Taiwan from Japanese control in 1945 when Japan surrendered at the end of the World War II. In early 1949, when the Chinese Nationalist Party Kuomintang (KMT) was defeated by the Communist Party of China (CPC) during the Chinese Civil War, the KMT retreated to the Island of Taiwan, which was the only territory left under the Republic of China’s (ROC) control. In the last two decades, ROC has been struggling in maintaining its international influence, while also trying to establish or reinforce a new national identity, Taiw...
Taiwan opposition leader James Soong urged the island's independence-leaning leaders to take advantage of his "bridge-building" trip to mainland China to seek cross-strait peace.
Historically, the Taiwan problem originated after the Nationalist and Communist Chinese re-ignited the Civil War. They had previously settled their disputes temporarily, to defend the invasion of the Japanese in the 1930s. The Civil War started again in 1946, only a year after fighting ceased at the end of the Second World War. The Communists were commanded by Mao Tse Tung, and the Nationalists were being lead by Chiang Kia-Shek. However, the Nationalists had the advantage of US support. The US were already concerned with the growing levels of Communism worldwide, and were determined not to let China also fall to Communism. The USA saw China as a major world superpower that had the potential to influence other, smaller countries into joining communism.

The second area that I will look at will be language. Language is an extremely important part of culture and some say that one cannot be found without the other. After that I will inform you about customs, traditions and taboos in Thai culture. This is a very important part of culture and is what shows the differences between cultures. Then I briefly tell you about the government and some national symbols, such as the flag, the symbol, colors, anthem, dress, and national day. Next, I will explain about religion in Thailand. In most cultures there is religion, but in Thailand it is interwoven into its whole culture and it is hard to separate the two. One other thing that I will include in this paper is a link to a page with pictures from my trip to Thailand.
