In the excerpt from “Biosphere Politics” by Jeremy Rifkin. I found something very interesting. He states “The separation of human beings from nature and the parallel detachment of human consciousness from the human body has transformed western man into an alien on his own planet” (Rifkin). If people could take trips to other places with out leaving the sanctity of there own home it would be an amazing experience. I also was amazed with Rifkins idea of downloading the human consciousness into a machine. If this is possible the human kind has found the fountain of youth.
I believe that it would be a great experience if a man could simply put a helmet on, and visit another place. This would enable a person to see the Grand Canyon, Pyramids in Egypt, and all the wonders of the world in the confines of his own home. This would be ingenious. I would enjoy trying that someday. I could see all the landmarks and fascinating things on the earth that I have dreamed of seeing and doing.
The idea that scientists could recreate the sense of smell and taste is imperative to this. Without this person’s mood attitude and feelings toward the experience is nothing but a television show. A subject could smell the ocean or fresh mountain air. This would surely enhance a mood. Electronic pulses would be transmitted into a persons mind make the experience better. This could also be an additive to the relief of pain. These scientific discoveries are advancements for the better of mankind. Rifkin also states “scientists are creating prototypes of computing machines that can simulate aspects of reality”. This would make anything seem real to a person. These environments are called “virtual reality”. I thought it was interesting when the author wrote about a robot mimicking the movements of a person in a virtual reality room. The robot would mimic every movement of the person in the room. All of these aspects propose a question that every man should ask himself; “Are these good things”.
The most outrageous idea in the entire excerpt was the thought of downloading human consciousness. This is the idea of living forever the “Fountain of Youth”. This poses as a new body when the other one is old or even broken. I find it hard to explain the possibility of anyone living forever. This would make a whole new world.
In conclusion of the My Virtual Life Simulation Program, I raised Luciano, my male child, until he reached the age of 18 years old. Luciano came about the world normally through a natural birth; labor lasted about 10 hours. Luciano inherited 50% of my characteristics through the survey taken prior to the start of the simulation. The other half was through the actions and changes that occurred throughout his life by the choices of my virtual partner and I and Luciano’s personal decisions later on in life. Certain characteristics Luciano developed resulted directly from the authoritative parenting style I chose to follow throughout the simulation. Despite minor setbacks towards the beginning, Luciano, developed properly in his psychological development which involved his physical, cognitive, social, and moral development, personality, emotional understanding, and peer competence. In the beginning years of his life he endured minor academic problems but later had no issue and was even involved in honor classes. He was also very social having
In the film, The Thirteenth Floor, people lived in a world with three different kinds of existence based on different time periods in history. These time periods included the 1930’s, the 1990’s, and the 2020’s. Each different kind of existence contained inhabitants who lived their lives how they normally would during their time periods. The inhabitants of the 2020’s created a simulation based on the 1990’s, while the inhabitants of the 1990’s created a simulation based on the 1930’s. These simulated existences are an excellent example of Descartes’s arguments about various reasons for doubt.
Expanded test of routing partial shipments directly to OBIC (instead of going through QC and the Dock first) to both sides of the week. Initial results are positive!
Place and Smart believe the effect of such exposure will change physical states. The change in physical states is what we are reporting on when we talk about sensation states. The thing we refer to when describing our sensation states is identical to the thing we refer to when talking about types of brain processes. Though we describe the same object with different modes of presentation (introspective and Scientific) the thing(s) we are referring to are really one and the same. The same component is being referred to when talking about a type of brain process or the sensation state. This thesis claims that “in so far as a sensation statement is a report of something, that something is in f...
For this section of presentations, I learned about health professional jobs that focused on behavior health. This section’s class presentations focused on community needs, substance use disorders, and nursing simulation learning program. Each presentation was educational and interesting to learn about. I enjoyed learning about the simulation learning center and how the student nurses learn and engage in nursing school.
With technology moving so quickly within the medical and nursing fields it is vital to embrace new and innovative ways to learn how to care for a patient. A nurse or nursing student is faced with the ever growing challenge of keeping up with new technologies. A fairly new way to gain education and build upon skills is with the use of simulated based learning. With the use a simulated nursing environment a student will be able to increase their level of understanding of new skills and technologies; this great resource has three major forms of real-life reproduction, can be used in many different areas of nursing, provides a means to evaluate a student’s understanding and demonstration of a skill, and eliminates the potential for harming a patient. With all education, the ultimate goal of mastering a specific trade or skill is the wanted end result. Simulated based education is a method that can be used within the field of nursing to accomplish this goal.
Imagine, you are a nurse in the middle of your shift when all of the sudden the alarm system sounds and over the intercom you hear “Doctor Quick Response Team Cardiac Unit”. You begin to feel flush, your heart is pounding and you become nervous, the questions start racing through your head “am I ready to respond, what am I going to do?” This reaction is completely normal, in fact in today’s health care setting the needs of health management services are increasing and more and more health care professionals are feeling the stress especially during medical emergencies. Therefore, it is important for hospitals and health care settings to have a policy in place to hold mock clinical simulations, for in times of emergency to allow for health care provider to practice and prepare to respond to medical emergencies in a rapid and organized fashion.
The experience that I had in simulation was great. I expected it to be very different opposite of what I thought. I was nervous and anxious when simulation day was coming up. The scenarios that were performed taught me a lot of things and prepared me in the future nursing career. What I thought I did well is being clients advocate. In the scenario with Henry he had COPD and was having shortness of breath during the simulation. I stood there by him while my colleagues were preparing medications for him. I have learned that we as nurses cannot leave our client unattended especially when client is having SOB and is in distress. It is very important to put your client’s priorities first.
I believe that certain desire will be more pleasurable and are much more valuable in real life. Such as a first kiss, though in machine you may actually think that the first kiss what is really happening and you’re content of the outcome. However, in reality this experience is much more exhilarating and exciting furthermore just the memory of it is much more valuable than the feeling and emotions that were happening in the present
The implanting of electrodes in the pleasure centers of all newly born infants seem almost ideal, at first. I would not volunteer my future children or myself, but I can no say that l am against it. However, crying from a newborn baby is completely natural and it is the only indicator in determining if the baby needs food or is uncomfortable. Some parents do use cold medicine to soothe a crying baby to sleep, but creating a drug just to soothe a crying baby can later be used too often and lead to long-term effects. I personally do not take medication (I do not even go for my flu shot) simply because the business of prescription at times can be unethical and unnecessary. Unless it is a natural simulator, if that.
His thought experiment is addressed in such a way where it skews the response of people into appearing that they are refuting pleasure when in reality they are refuting the artificialness of all the experiences they would get with the “experiment machine”. After analyzing the decisions that someone would choose to use or not use the machine, it was distinguished that each decision would be based on what a person perceived to be more pleasurable. Therefore, proving that humans are in fact hedonists. Humans will always have the tendency to seek pleasure. As long as their pursuit of pleasure has no cost, the opportunity to experience greater pleasure will always be
One of the main reasons humans would not devote their lives to this experience machine is because they would be giving up more than they were gaining. As humans we are constantly trying to be a certain sort of person. We all have differing traits and personalities which we spend much time discovering and refining for our entire lives. A person who enters into this machine is only, “someone floating in a tank as an indeterminate blob”. Humans are the only species that can be so vastly different from each other. Being this blob diminishes our perso...
...free thought to a degree that has never before been available to us. This will bring about a new age of enlightenment, so to speak. He concludes by saying ‘the sea, our sea, lies open again; maybe there has never been such an open sea.’
Virtual reality can be defined as a, "technology that enables users to enter computer generated worlds and interface with them three dimensionally through sight, sound, and touch" (Newquist 93). Virtual reality combines computer simulation and visualization into a single, coherent whole (Peterson 8). Researchers say it embodies an attempt to eliminate the traditional distinction between the user and the machine. Virtual reality is intended to provide a means of naturally and intelligently interacting with information (8). Virtual reality is contending to be the interface of the future, allowing ordinary users to use their senses to interact with complex data.
I think that it is about time to make research on new types of virtual realities than it was done so far. New types of features that can feed our imagination, feelings and senses much more than we can conceive in real world.
