Envy and jealousy are the catalysts for Hugo’s desire to hurt Odin and Mike. Hugo envies Mike for Odin choosing him over Hugo to share the coveted Most Valuable Player award (MVP). At the presentation Hugo’s own father, Coach Duke Goulding states boldly,
“…And I’m not ashamed to say this in public but, I love him like a son.” The camera shows the dismay displayed on Hugo’s face. From this point on Hugo envies both Mike and Odin and pledges to do whatever required of him to ruin both their lives. Just as Othello prefers Cassio as his lieutenant rather than Iago. Iago also mentions in a soliloquy that,
“ I hate the Moor,
And it is thought abroad that ‘twixt my sheets
He’s done my office. I know if’t be true.”
Iago is suspicious of his own wife being unfaithful and is jealous of Othello, even though it is only rumour not truth.
Hugo’s plan is to fill Odin’s mind with doubts of infidelity about Mike and Desi’s relationship. Hugo first mentions his suspicions in the gym where the two are alone. He tells Odin,
“If there’s one thing I know it’s white girls, they’re like horny snakes.”
Hugo asks if there’s anything going on between Desi and Mike and if Odin trusts Mike. If Hugo hadn’t of warned Odin, the thought would’ve never have occurred to him as he said to Mike,
“What I’m gone a few hours and you’re already stealing my girl big Mike?”
This was said sarcastically by Odin after he was admitted to hospital after retaining an arm injury playing basketball.
Iago questions Cassio and Desdemona’s relationship just as Hugo did.
“…I speak not yet of proof.
Look to your wife, observe her well with Cassio;
Wear your eyes thus; not jealous, nor secure.”
Eventually Odin becomes so envious and jealous of Mike and Desi’s supposed affair he is so motivated to kill Mike.
“How can I kill this mother fucker Hugo?”
But Hugo mentions Desi, which only places the idea in Odin’s mind, and shows Hugo’s powers of manipulation.
“But what about Desi.” He replies.
Othello reacts in the same manner as Odin.
“…Within these three days let me hear thee say
That Cassio’s not alive.”
Iago’s agreeingly replies but also manipulates Othello by mentioning Desdemona.
“My friend is dead;
‘Tis down at your request. But let her live.”
“Damn her, lewd minx! O, damn her, damn her!”
Also included in this cycle of envy and jealousy is Roger who is envious of Desi and Odin’s relationship and is ever willing to help Hugo in his plan to break them up.
Hugo's motives are making people think Odin is bad, and getting his father's concentration. Since it is difficult for Hugo to operate the plan (which is breaks up Desi and Odin) by himself, he manipulates Roger, Michael, Odin and Emily to work on his plan. Furthermore, he knows everyone's weakness, and it is easier for him to manipulate others.
Elizabeth reaches out to Napoleon to dismiss the bitter thing Hugo says. By encouraging that “[She] has no knowledge of [Hugo]; [she] never saw his face and certainly doesn’t know how to come now to make [Hugo] apology.” This being said she may have no idea who Hugo is. She still expresses condemnatory that he is not left behind. Elizabeth is saying that Napoleon III, the Emperor of France, will bypass what Hugo says about the
9. Valjean’s punishment certainly did not fit his crime. Neither did Fantine deserve the treatment she received in his factory. Discuss Hugo’s purpose in using these situations in his social commentary.
...her temptation had accomplished this; therefore her cruel effect must have been fate. As she awaited death, one character noticed the incidence of destiny when she remarked that “‘God has it all written down in His book'” (182). One aspect of Victor Hugo's work, his revelations of themes, philosophies, and morals through humorous characters, seems reminiscent of Sir Walter Scott's usage of a comparable pretext. Through the philosopher/poet, Gringoire, Hugo presents a moral that “‘the temptations of the flesh are pernicious and malignant'” (276). Certainly there exists some truth to this supposition on a central idea of the novel, the animosity stirred by mortal sensitivity, that during man's eternal search for affection--even when he possesses it, he still craves more.
...nal play—he then goes on to tell Desi’s father that Odin was forcing himself on Desi. Next he started a fight with Michael at a party, which lead to Michael getting benched and Odin getting mad at Michael, causing strain between the two. Hugo suggest to Michael that he become close with Desi to get back in with Odin. Then it starts; Hugo’s master plan has been set into action. He plants lies into Odin’s head about Desi and Michel that he ends up believing, because he lets jealousy cloud his judgment.
In the Shakespearean tragedy Othello the number and description of themes is open to discussion. With the help of literary critics, we can analyze this subject in detail.

Iago manipulates Othello by telling him false lies about his wife and Cassio having an affair which ruins the relationship between Othello and his spouse. To Othello, Iago is a loyal, trustworthy, and honest friend. Othello is always asking Iago for advice because he is closer to him and puts his full trust on his faithful friend. However, Iago abhors Othello through jealousy because Othello appointed Cassio as his lieutenant. “I’ a...
Henry leaving gave him the opportunity to create a better life for himself, which is ironic since his relationship with Mike ultimately ruins his future. Nevertheless, Henry viewed Mike as a savior and suffered through “twelve long lonely weeks before he’d finally called”. The language used by Harbach to describe Henry's original feelings about Mike, portrays Mikes as some sort of religious prophet. He felt isolated and alone and when he reconciled with Mike, Henry worshiped him. The pain Henry encounters during his time without Mike was the first sign that Henry's mental health was weakened by their relationship. Henry did anything and everything to please Mike and as a result of his obedience, Mike adored Henry. Mike enables Henry’s addictive behavior by giving him positive feedback for his obsessive behavior. He pushes Henry during the baseball season to his breaking point, his first error. When Henry makes his first mistake, to end his record breaking streak, he cannot cope with the failure. Mike coaches Henry to believe that achieving perfection is the sole purpose of his life. Henry not being able to achieve the goal set by Mike results in Henry falling into a dark depression and anorexia. Instead of Mike turning to a professional for help, he believed that he could save Henry. Similarly to what he did with Henry’s obsession over perfection, Mike enabled Henry’s self destructive
Even though it was a rumor, Iago chose to believe that Othello had an affair with his wife.
...e must be a travesty, which is filled with tarnished emotions. Due to his own insecurities and phobia of a promiscuous wife, Othello is quick to believe in the bogus claims implied by Iago.
Envy and jealousy are the most profound themes in the play from the start to finish. As the
Othello, a great man who leads by example, only has one weakness, his wife. The liar Iago, on the other hand, hates the world, and blames his hatred and his life situation on Othello. Iago then becomes the mastermind who makes Othello turn to revenge from his lies. Implementing his plan, Iago creates friction between Othello and his dear lieutenant friend Cassio. He takes advantage of a drunken brawl when a fight breaks out between two others. The main portion of Iago's plan sends
Iago is one of the most complex characters in William Shakespeare’s Othello. To most of the characters, he is “Honest Iago” (Shakespeare, 5.2.73). however, the audience knows that Iago is the furthest thing from honest. Iago is a devil bent on destroying the lives of everyone around him. At the beginning of the play, the audience learns that Iago is determined to ruin Othello’s marriage to Desdemona. He has appointed a new lieutenant, Michael Cassio. This angers Iago because he feels that he has much more military experience and should be the lieutenant. Iago has also heard rumours that both Othello and Cassio have slept with his wife Emilia. He concocts a malicious plan to ruin the lives of all who have wronged him, and consequently establishing
“It is precisely of him that I wished to speak. Dispose of me as you please; but help me first to carry him home. I only ask that of you.” Upon examination of Les Miserables, it is clearly evident that the elements of Forgiveness, Self – Sacrifice, and Courage are only a few of the main themes Hugo wanted to develop.
