Argument Essay
Where would we be Without Animal Testing?
Is the use of animals in research justified? Should animal experimentation be permitted? Should these animals be liberated? A logical person would say the benefits justify the research. Without animal testing, products would be based on theory. No one would want to use something, which may damage eyes, be poisonous, cancerous, and cause birth defects. Animals used in testing are not from the endangered species list; also many of the types of animals used are killed each year by rat or mouse traps, animal control, exterminators, and animal shelters. Animal testing reaps great benefits such as finding effective drugs to combat disease, improve surgical procedures, and make products safe.
When someone goes to the store and buys a product, or is prescribed medication, they don’t have to worry if the product is safe to use nor should they. The entire human race benefits from animal research. “Without animal research, medical science would come to a total standstill”(O’Neil 210). It is not as if Scientist and researchers just sit in their labs all day and torture animals for fun. Not to mention animal use is being reduced as much as possible, “most scientist are glad to use alternative test because they are usually faster and cheaper than test on animals”(Yount 72). However, “you cannot study kidney transplantation or diarrhea or high bloodpressure on a computer screen”(O’Neil 212). Besides, “Animal research has led to vaccines against diptheria, rabies, tuberculosis, polio, measles, mumps, cholera, whooping cough, and rubella. It has meant eradication of smallpox, effective treatment for diabetes and control of infection with powerful antibiotics. The cardiac pacemaker, microsurgery to reattach severed limbs, and heart, kidney, lung, liver and other transplants are all possible because of animal research”(O’Neil 210).
In short animal testing saves lives. Animal testing helps find causes, and cures of disease, genetic defects, birth defects, and abnormalities.
Without animal research, cures for such diseases as typhoid, diphtheria, and polio might never have existed. Without animal research, the development of antibiotics and insulin would have been delayed. Without animal research, many human beings would now be dead. However, because of animal testing, 200,000 dogs, 50,000 cats, 60,000 primates, 1.5 million hamsters, and uncounted millions of rats and mice are experimented upon and die each year, as living fodder for the great human scientific machine. Some would say that animal research is an integral part of progress; unfortunately, this is often true. On the whole, animal testing is a necessary evil that should be reduced and eliminated whenever possible.
The main reason for animal testing is to cure humans from diseases. This is beneficial to us because we get cured and the experiments are not done to us! Rats and mice are used 95% of the time for animal testing. This is because they reproduce quickly and they can get similar diseases to humans, allowing scientists to accurately find out ways to cure them and eventually, us. If you care deeply for the way rats are treated, why put up mouse traps and poison? Using them to test on will only save human lives.
The first pro to animal testing is that it has helped us create lifesaving cures and treatments. The California Biomedical Research Association released a statement saying almost every single medical breakthrough has resulted in the direct use of animals in the last 100 years. Can you believe this? Taking out dogs pancreases helped us discover insulin, chimpanzees helped us get a vaccine for Hepatitis B, and even the polio vaccine was tested on animals. Animal testing has also helped us treat and understand conditions like brain injury, breast cancer, cystic fibrosis, childhood leukemia, tuberculosis, multiple sclerosis, malaria, and many others. It even helped us develop anesthetics, pacemakers, and cardiac value substitutes. Almost every cure for any condition is due to animal testing. Without animal testing, we may not have been able to find many of these cures and find cures for other conditions in the future.
There are many pros and cons to the practice of animal testing. Unfortunately, neither side pleases everyone- including the general public, government and scientists. Animal testing is a process that has been going on for centuries for many different reasons; finding drugs and treatments to improve health and medication. Many medical treatments have been made possible by animal testing, including cancer, HIV drugs, insulin, antibiotics, vaccines and many more. Scientists usually use animals for testing purpose because they are considering similar to humans. Animals have their differences, and are also similarities. This is what comparative medicine is about: researches use both similarities and differences to gain insight into the many complex human biological systems.
This topic may be one of the most ever argued, but I feel that the only argument against animal testing that people use is, “No, please, animal testing can kill all of the animals, it’s cruel, it’s inhumane, and you’re a terrible human being.” Okay, Of course this isn’t untrue, but like I said, animal testing can bring many benefits. For example, animal testing has led to the founding of many life-saving cures and treatments. According to the US-based Foundation Biomedical Research, “animal research has played a vital role in virtually every major medical advance of the last century - for both human and veterinary health. From antibio...
Animal testing has been used for developing and researching cures for medical conditions. For example, the polio vaccine, chemotherapy for cancer, insulin treatment for diabetes, organ transplants and blood transfusions are just some of the important advances that have come from research on animals (“Animal Testing”). Consuming animals for research benefits in developing various treatments and also benefits in discovery better methods for cures. According to the article “Animal Testing”, it says that the underlying rationale for the use of animal testing is that living organisms provide interactive, dynamic systems that scientists can observe and manipulate in order to understand normal and pathological functioning as well as the effectiveness of medical interventions. It relies on the physiological and anatomical similarities between humans and other animals (MacClellan, Joel). Meaning that animals have the same body components and features as humans and is the best thing to research on to better understand the human development. Even though several argue that animal testing is harming the animals, one has to think back to all the benefits that has come from it. There may be a little remorse for endangering animal lives, but realizing how far medicine has come makes it worth the while.
Every year, more and more diseases and sicknesses need cures. The need for new medicine and treatments procedures causes animal research to increase. People that are involved in the fight for animal rights say that the animals should be protected just like humans. However, animal testing can find cures for deadly sick humans, which is more important than the very rare unfair abuse to animals. Animal testing should be allowed because although it can be bothersome to some animals, the outcomes are exaggerated, it creates procedures, and it helps find a cure to human health problems.
To begin with, animal testing is vital to find out side effects of medicine that should be tested on animals rather than being tested on human begins. According to Archibald (2004), in 1937, in the USA, a drug was distributed in liquid to treat streptococcal infections. Unfortunately, the solvent was diethylene glycol (antifreeze), which was known to be horribly and fatally toxic but drug-safety testing was not required. 137 deaths followed. In addition, animals have saved human lives for decades. Without animal research, many of the diseases would still affect the world today and few cures would be found. According to Emory University, “major medical advances that have resulted from animal research include the treatment of rabies, smallpox, pellagra, and rickets and the discovery of sulfa drugs, penicillin, and other modern antibiotics.” Finally, animal research is continuing to enhance and improve the medical field overall. For example, a new neuroimplant system, the Tulggar, developed to solve the problems with present implants was tested on sheep to ensure the use on living tissue. Without the use of sheep to test this new implant system, the Tulgar would not have been developed and be established as a clinical tool in modern medicine (Kalkan et. Al, 2015). However, even though animal research has been the foundation for medicinal uses, animal rights activists will
To begin, without the sacrifice of the animals we do test on, many people would die. Animal testing is how many disease cures are found. Scientists have found out how to treat diabetes, smallpox, measles, and many other cures by animal testing. Many surgeries have been perfected by animal research. These medical advances also help other animals with. ...
The optimistic viewpoints for animal testing are that it assists researchers in finding drugs and treatments to advance health and medicine. It is a legal requirement in most countries for drugs and vaccines to be tested in animals to ensure safety. The world would be a different place if animal research for medical purposes were done away with hundreds of years ago. Today many medical treatments have been made possible by animal testing, including cancer and HIV drugs, insulin, antibiotics, vaccines, etc. Animal testing and research is considered very important for improving human health; in fact, the scientific community and some of the general public support animal research. There are also groups of individuals who are against animal testing for cosmetics but they defend animal testing for medicine and the development of new drugs for disease.
According to the California Biomedical Association, nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals (CBRA Fact Sheet: Why Are Animals Necessary in Biomedical Research?). Without animal testing, thousands of people continue dying because of diseases, which no longer exist thanks to Animal testing .Examples of that is the Polio vaccine and how his creator, Albert Sabin, said:"Without animal research, polio would still be claiming thousands of lives each year.”. The use of animals on research is essential to the development of new cures and a more effective method for diagnosis and treating diseases that affect humans as well as animals. It is a fact that some diseases and health problems involve processes that can only be studied in living organisms according to the same
First, animal testing would provide scientists with new ways to treat diseases. Many vaccines for diseases have been found by testing on animals. For example, millions of people would die per year of diseases that scientists had no idea on how to deal with if they did not take the time experiment on animals first. Heloisa Sabinos of The Wall Street Journal says, “Without animal research, polio would still be claiming thousands of lives each year. There could not have been any oral vaccine without the use of innumerable animals, a very large number of animals” (1). Polio is just the start of diseases cured by these tests. Also, Dr. Joseph E. Murray states, “The research almost certainly will enable doctors to treat leukemia, a plastic anemia and lymphoma patients with human bone marrow that is less than perfect match and open the pool of potential organ donors to include animals” (Los Angeles Times 1). As illustrated, animal experimentation will benefit all living things in the lon...
Can you imagine your pet, Fluffy being ripped apart on your table for an animal experiment. Well I now I would not like that happening to me so I doubt you would not like that either. So many animals die every year because of animal experiments. Animals should never die because of animals experiments. Some people may think, that scientist are using these animals to test cancer cures or virus cures. You may think that but research proves that most scientist are not really using them for those reasons. Animals should never be used for research because animal organs are different from human organs, animals are being harmed on purposes to see if a cure would work even though they are dieing in the process, and most animal research is used for
...ines to stop dangerous diseases (Paul). Animal research has played a vital role in medical science for the last century. Animal testing has been very essential to medical research and have led to discovering new tools to help individuals. Because of animal testing we have discovered new medicines and procedures to benefit people such as, antibiotics, blood transfusions, organ-transplantations, and vaccinations. Animal organizations and activist has little knowledge on medical research, so they don’t know how this research benefits us. Animal testing has proven to be a very important part in medical studies and it will continue to be for generations to generations. Animal testing will never end but evolve and lead us to further medical understanding. Without animal testing we would be expose to chemical, Air-Bourne, and contagious diseases this world will hand to us.
Animal testing hasn’t been beneficiary towards any scientific breakthrough or discovery. Elias Zourhini says, “Animal testing has been useless” he is one of the main people who are strongly making a push to try and stop animal testing as a whole. “There have been thousands of dead and injured animals in the past years or so and there has been any reward or safety ensured because of these animals. Animals have been being used for testing for many years now, and especially now, the number of animals that are being used to be experimented on are extremely high. However, you may not know that laboratories aren’t required to publish how many animals they used or how many experiments conducted. Maybe that would help to find out especially what animals need to be strongly protected against testing. “Every laboratory should publish an annual statement setting forth plainly the number and kind of experiments and the methods of conducting them” (Gould qd. in Leffingwell 211). This would help many things and especially organizations that are protesting, to give reasons and facts about testing. Animals are used and then unaccounted for. Truly, you may never know h...
