My Goal Statement:
Life after Coppin State College
Teachers have a very important responsibility of shaping the lives of young, impressionable children. With this responsibility comes great pride and joy. Therefore, as a high school teacher I want to strive to be what can be considered as, a “good teacher.” A good teacher can be defined as someone who always pushes students to want to do their best while at the same time trying to make learning interesting as well as creative. A positive or negative influence from a teacher early on in life can have a great effect on the life of a child. As part of my goal statement I plan to incorporate all of these qualities to become the teacher that I expect and want to be.
It’s the year 2010, and it is my 2nd year as the Business Management teacher at Owings Mills High School. After working with the Baltimore City Public school system it became hard to deal with the hardship of providing so much without help from the school system. While there I worked on my masters in education at UMBS. I decided to stay in Baltimore and work in Baltimore County Public School System; even though there are some situations that need to be resolved it is much more manageable than with Baltimore City School System.
Here at Owings Mills High School I mostly interact with black student as well as staff. The job is very much high in demand; having evaluations and as wells as “ready lesson plans to be viewed by the department chair. I teach both 9th and 10th grade business management classes, when there are different attitudes that are shown in the classroom. With the 9th grade they are very talkative and wanting to find there place in high school, so of course they are the loudest and most annoying. While the 10th graders are still talkative but have learned there lesson from last year and are have a little more work on their mind than they had last year.
At Owing Mill High School I teach both 9th and 10th grade classes of business management course, where there are different attitudes that are shown from the different grade levels. The culture of the class is mostly black with few while students. There are more females in the classroom than males; the class size is from 25 to 30 students each class.
Benjamin Banneker, the son of former slaves and an author of this letter that he wrote to Thomas Jefferson, brought to the attention of inequality and unfairness of slavery. Banneker’s purpose is to have Thomas Jefferson to reflect n the words written in the Declaration of Independence and to voice out his opposing viewpoint on slavery in order to make change to the equality spoken in the Declaration of Independence. Banneker adopts a serious and critical tone with Tomas Jefferson to show him that slaves did not experience what they should’ve experienced, which where the rights entitled by nature.
Aside from the pedagogical implications of such a striking phenotype, many pioneering studies relating to PTC and the taster/non-taster phenotype have been conducted since its discovery (Wooding 2006). Slavery in the United States of America occurred throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. During this time, over 305,000 slaves were imported into present-day America. In 1791, Benjamin Banneker, a self-educated mathematician, astronomer, and writer, wrote a letter to the secretary of state at the time, Thomas Jefferson. Banneker said to Jefferson, “ I apprehend you will embrace every opportunity, to eradicate that train of absurd and false ideas and opinions, which so generally prevails with respect to us.” This was Banneker’s main purpose of the letter: He wanted to inform Jefferson of the unfairness and injustice slavery brings. Benjamin Banneker’s incorporates ethos, pathos, and logos throughout his letter and that is what makes it such an impactful piece of writing.
We as the people of the United States of America have been granted certain liberties and inalienable rights, and because of this, these liberties cannot be taken away from us. If this is so, then why was the Declartion written during the time of slavery, when there were men that had no rights or liberties? The people of the states had ignorantly turned their eyes from the Declaration of Independence in the involvement and justification of slavery for their own benefit because they did not see these slaves as equal men from their internal and external attributes and have mishandled them.
An instance of this is in the second paragraph where Banneker references the Constitution where it says "all men are created equal, and they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.” He knows that Jefferson will have a hard time challenging the Constitution that he wrote himself, thus making this rhetorical strategy one of his most important to persuade him. Banneker also draws up memories of the recent American, connecting the role that the British held over the Colonies to the role that the white men held over the slaves. This allows Jefferson to identify and relate to the injustice that Banneker feels is held over the slaves. Finally, in the last paragraph, Banneker quotes Job from the Bible where he says “put your souls in their soul's stead.” Banneker knows that if Jefferson is going to challenge his country, he won’t challenge his religion or morals. This tests Jefferson’s own morals because he doesn’t want to contradict his own faith, making him more inclined to agree with
The ethics behind genetic engineering have been discussed and argued for years now. Some arguing points often include competitive advantages, playing God, and the polarization of society, but Sandel takes a different approach in explaining society’s “unease” with the morality of genetic engineering. Broadcasted through several examples throughout the book, Sandel explains that genetic engineering is immoral because it takes away what makes us human and makes us something else. He states that by taking control of our genetic makeup, or the makeup of our progeny, we lose our human dignity and humility. Our hunger for control will lead to the loss of appreciation for natural gifts, whether they are certain talents, inherited from the genetic lottery, or the gift of life itself.
In this paper, I will argue that genetic therapies should be allowed for diseases and disabilities that cause individuals pain, shorter life spans, and noticeable disadvantages in life. I believe this because everyone deserves to have the most even starting place in life as possible. That is no being should be limited in their life due to diseases and disabilities that can be cured with genetic therapies. I will be basing my argument off the article by “Gene Therapies and the Pursuit of a Better Human” by Sara Goering. One objection to genetic therapies is that removing disabilities and diseases might cause humans to lose sympathy towards others and their fragility (332). However, I do not believe this because there are many other events and conditions in society that spark human compassion and sympathy towards others.
Recent breakthroughs in the field of genetics and biotechnology have brought attention to the ethical issues surrounding human enhancement. While these breakthroughs have many positive aspects, such as the treatment and prevention of many debilitating diseases and extending human life expectancy well beyond its current limits, there are profound moral implications associated with the ability to manipulate our own nature. Michael Sandel’s “The Case Against Perfection” examines the ethical and moral issues associated with human enhancement while Nick Bostrom’s paper, “In Defense of Posthuman Dignity” compares the positions that transhumanists and bioconservatists take on the topic of human enhancement. The author’s opinions on the issue of human genetic enhancement stand in contrast to one another even though those opinions are based on very similar topics. The author’s views on human enhancement, the effect enhancement has on human nature, and the importance of dignity are the main issues discussed by Sandel and Bostrom and are the focus of this essay.

Despite Jefferson’s vocal opposition of slavery, he still owned hundreds of slaves and profited immensely off of the institution of slavery and Banneker articulated that inherent hypocrisy in his letter. Jefferson supported gradual emancipation, and while that was a step in the right direction, it did not make any kind of significant improvement in the lives of those who were continuing to suffer under slavery. He wanted to “improve” some of the more violent aspects of slavery by reducing physical punishments and improving quality of life, but even then human beings are still being treated as property. Although he was anti-slavery, he still believed that black people were inferior and Banneker used religion as part of his persuasion: “It is the indispensable duty of those who maintain for themselves the rights of human nature, and who profess the obligations of Christianity, to extend their powers and influence to the relief of every part of the human race, from whatever burden or oppression they may unjustly labor under” (Page
The world was once made up of black and white nations. The color of one’s skin was an indication of where someone came from. This was most likely the scenario of the world, at the very least, a hundred years ago. Racism was rampant and very public throughout the world, but now racism is not as transparent especially in the United States. For this reason people must become more open and attuned to different attitudes held by individuals. One area where racism should be looked at is in classrooms. It is well documented that people have preferences or cognitive preferences without even realizing it. A teacher therefore, has extremely powerful ability to not only give certain children preferences but also treat students different with or without realizing it themselves. At an early age of six children of exposed to this and will likely in turn mimic these behaviors. Schools have rampant discrimination tendencies throughout The United States however this does not have to be the case there must be solutions for Teachers and students a like to become more aware of discriminatory actions and to at least limit these action by becoming aware of them.
For the past seven years, I have had the same dream - to someday be a high school math teacher. I am finally on my way to turning that dream into a reality. Along the way, I am learning a lot of things and forming a number of opinions. One of the main areas in which I am forming new beliefs is in relation to what methods I will use in teaching my class and what aspects of what philosophies I will employ. First of all, however, I must reach the point where I have a class to teach.
I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, socially, and academically. It is my desire as a future educator to help students meet their fullest potential by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are two elements that I believe are essential to establishing such an environment, (1) allowing the child’s natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and (2) promoting respect for all things and all people.
...ool and high school. I have overcome these in my own personal and professional endeavors, but it can be hard to do for young students. Not only was my school majority white students, but the schools it fed into were quite the opposite, creating drastic contrast. Montgomery Blair High School, not 20 minutes, prides itself in being one the most diverse schools in the nation (Hadidi, A.24). My school was made up of kids that were all exactly or mostly the same. When it comes down to it, although I had the most caring teachers in the world, I learned very little about life and our nation’s great diversity as a student there. The nation is changing and the school systems throughout the country need to adapt their curriculums to handle it. Through new strategies and responsive teaching, teachers will pave the way for a heterogenous, successful and peaceful society.
My education goal is to further improve my art skills and I will love it if Haskell will grant me the honor of helping me improving my skills to that level.
