George Washington Carver
George Washington Carver was born a slave in Diamond Grove, Missouri. As a small child Carver was rescued from a band of Confederate kidnappers. From early on Carver was determined to get himself an education. Carver began his schooling in Newton Country, and while attending school he also worked very hard as a farm hand. While working and studying Carver lived in a one-room schoolhouse, and as time went on he excelled as sought out for higher education. Because of his race Carver was denied on attending Highland University. In 1887 Carver got excepted to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
Carver made many outstanding contributions to the agricultural world and also on America it’s self. Carver changed the face of Agriculture in the south with his crop rotation methods. Carver discovered through research and trail and error ways to help soil stay fertile. Through this discovery the nutrients would stay in the ground, and crops could be planted on the same soil year after year. Carver discovered that planting peanut one year then the next planting cotton would keep the soil fertial for the following year. The peanuts contained nitrate-producing legumes, and the cotton took all the nutrients from the soil, so the soil was fresh each planting season. The farmer took his peanuts and used them as a source of food for their livestock. Carver did not over look the peanuts as just food for animals, and found over 325 ways to use the peanuts for other reasons than food. He used peanuts to make peanut butter, cooking oil, printer ink, and many more useful applications for the peanut. Carver being the introvator that he was also found many ways for the pecan and sweet potato to help the soil. Carver developed many synthetic products that could be used by all people and not too hard to make. Carver developed adhesives, bleach, cheese, instant coffee, syntheic rubber, and Worcestershire souce just to name a few.
One night there was a raiding party that took George and his mother and though his mother never came back, he was eventually returned to the Carvers. He and James took Carter as a last name because they weren’t allowed last names when they were slaves, and because they were the ones who had raised them and whom they still lived with. George stayed at the Carvers and helped with cooking and gardening, which he was so good at he adopted the name “The Plant Doctor.” George Washington Carver had little schooling, even though he could read very well. When he was 12 he attended a black school in Neosho, Missouri, about eight miles away, because he had been rejected from Diamond Grove because he was black. Booker T Washington was born into slavery on a plantation in Franklin County Virginia. Like many slaves at that time, historians are not sure of the exact place or date of his birth (Washington, Up From Slavery 7). Washington had absolutely no schooling while he was a slave; he received all his education after he was set free. The fact that he had no education through slavery, made it that much more important to him when he did get his education, and that is one of the reasons he so highly stressed education. In 1896 George Washington Carver, a recent graduate of Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts (now Iowa State University), accepted an invitation from Booker T. Washington to head the agricultural department at Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for Negroes (now Tuskegee University). During a tenure that lasted nearly 50 years, Carver elevated the scientific study of farming, improved the health and agricultural output of southern farmers, and developed hundreds of uses for their crops.
George Washington Carver was born in Missouri on the Moses Carver plantation. His parents were slaves. His father died right before George was born, then while he was still a baby, slave traders kidnapped him and his mother. Only George was returned to the plantation. When he was a baby, he had a disease called whooping cough. It left him sickly and he couldn't do hard work like the other slaves. His chores were cooking and sewing. He loved to work in the garden. He taught himself to read. His family was so poor, he couldn't afford to buy a pencil, so he made a holder and used a pencil that was only 1/4 inch long.
Ulysses S. Grant once said, “The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving on.” Although this may seem simplistic, this quote is verbatim to what he did during the civil war. Ulysses is a notorious person in U.S history. He was a family man, farmer, store clerk, and the eighteenth president of the United States but his impact as general of the Union army during the Civil War is what he is known for and has made him the legend that he is today.
Both Plato and Hobbes present different views of justice in reply to the fool. Plato, claiming one should be just because it is good in itself, where as Hobbes claims being just is good for the pursuit of self-interest or preservation. Despite the difference of opinion on justice between the two philosophers, it is clear that the fool?s statement has been refuted. For there is such a thing as justice despite the differences in how the term is defined.
At the time Shakespeare wrote Macbeth, it was the beginning of the seventeenth century. The reign of Macbeth was actually during the mid-eleventh century. He became king in 1040 after killing King Duncan who according to Fisher “was an ineffectual king” (Fisher, 43). Macbeth would then rule for the next 17 years, having appeared “to have been a good king, active and conscientious, if not always able to hold on to the whole of the territory he had gained through the murder of Duncan” (Fisher, 44). Quite the opposite in the play, Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as an evil and cruel king during the whole time of his reign. Glover points out this untruth, “Macbeth’s character has suffered unjustly at the hands of Shakespeare, as he ruled Scotland well for some seventeen years, and there is evidence that the country enjoyed some prosperity during his reign” (Glover, 39). Yet Macbeth’s reign did end in 1057 when he was killed by Malcolm, Duncan’s son, in the battle of Lumphanan. However, it wasn’t until after Macbeth’s step-son Lulach ruled for about a year, that Malcolm became king after killing him in 1058. This is where Shakespeare ends the play wit...
The biggest change Shakespeare made to the play was the details of Macbeth’s death. In the play it is Macduff who murders Macbeth in Dunsinane. The truth is that Duncan’s son, Malcolm Canmore (later Malcolm III)is the one who defeated and killed Macbeth in Lumphanan with the help of the English army. However, Malcolm’s attempt for the crown was ruined, when the king followers placed Macbeth’s stepson, Lulach, on the throne. After ruling for only a few months, Macbeth’s stepson Lulach, was assassinated by Malcolm ultimately seizing the throne("Bio.com").
In sophisticated prose, Hobbes manages to conclude that human beings are all equal in their ability to harm each other, and furthermore that they are all capable of rendering void at will the covenants they had previously made with other human beings. An absolutist government, according to Hobbes, would result in a in a society that is not entirely focused on self-preservation, but rather a society that flourishes under the auspices of peace, unity, and security. Of all the arguably great philosophical discourses, Hobbes in particular provides one of the surest and most secure ways to live under a sovereign that protects the natural liberties of man. The sovereign government is built upon the idea of stability and security, which makes it a very intriguing and unique government indeed. Hobbes, on the other hand argues that justice is needed for people to live together in civil society. He outlines this idea down to human beings in the
Carver created hundreds of products from the sweet potato and pecan. He created 300 or more from his most famous plant the peanut.(Brodie, 75) Carver ofentimes just gave a base idea and over time people continued to work on it. There are still many people working in Tuskeegee to better Carvers ideas. Some are working with sweet potatos to end world hunger.(Brodie, 76) Brodie comments on Carvers many creations in this statement, "Among Carver's synthetic creations from plants were adhesives, axlegrease, bleach, buttermilk, cheese, chili sauce, cream, dyes, flour, fuel briquetts, ink, instant coffee, insulating board, linoleum, mayonnaise, meat tenderizer, metal polish, milk flakes, mucilage, paper, salve, shampoo, shoe polish, shaving cream, steak sauce, sugar, marble, rubber, talcum powder, varnishing cream, wood stain, and wood filler." (81) This suggests that Carver found many different uses from the things that he had. He also created a new way to pave highways and made products from old corn stalks and husks.[Idea Finder] Carver worked so hard on helping others with creating uses for the peanut, even small things that seemed insignificant, that he made it too popular. Making the peanut so popular decreased it value and significance; thus Carver decided to explore other options such as the sweet potato. (Gates and West 46-49)
Thomas Hobbes creates a clear idea of the social contract theory in which the social contract is a collective agreement where everyone in the state of nature comes together and sacrifices all their liberty in return to security. “In return, the State promises to exercise its absolute power to maintain a state of peace (by punishing deviants, etc.)” So are the power and the ability of the state making people obey to the laws or is there a wider context to this? I am going to look at the different factors to this argument including a wide range of critiques about Hobbes’ theory to see whether or not his theory is convincing reason for constantly obeying the law.
