How did you explore victim and violence?
As an assessed drama piece based on “Domestic Violence”, the group I
was in explored victim and violence by using a number of explorative
strategies and drama mediums. In the play, we explored the feeling of
being a victim of violence and how a victim of violence becomes a
violator. The play that we performed was based on two key words from
the song, “Behind the Wall” by Tracy Chapman. The two words are:
victim and violence. The play’s main theme is irony.
The play revolves around two characters that used to attend school
together. One of the characters, Catherine – played by Bronwyn, had a
low status at school and was always bullied. The other character,
Kevin – played by Sean, was a bully and therefore had a higher status.
However, as time passes Kevin becomes a low status character and
Catherine evolves into a high status character. This results in the
bullied person now being the bully and one day meeting the character
who bullied her through childhood. There is also a waiter – played by
Oliver, and a waitress - played by Joelle.
The first scene was set in a modern day, British café. To make the
audience aware of the setting, a still image was used as the opening
of the play. The still image consisted of 2 chairs facing each other,
one down stage left and one up stage right. In front of each chair was
a main character. The high status character, Catherine, was placed in
front of the chair down stage left. Catherine stood in a slouchy
position and her hair a mess. This gave the audience a clue that
Catherine was of a higher status. The low status character, Kevin, was
placed in front of the chair up stage right. Kevin stood with his head
positioned towards the floor. The reason the low status character was
placed backstage was to give the audience a hint of the characters’
social status. This is because a stereotypical low status person is
more likely to blend into the background of a café than sit near the
front window to be viewed by passing pedestrians. Behind each chair,
facing down stage, was a waiter/waitress. The movements of the waiter
and waitress were performed synchronistical. This means that they both
walked to the table at the same time and both spoke at the same time.
This was used to show that the waiter and waitress were of equal
status and relevantly insignificant in the play.
The two characters of the play are complete contrasts.
Many of us have seen a Disney movie when we were younger. Disney movies captured our attention with their good morals and successful conclusions of finding their true love. The animations and music transform us into a land of magic where anything is possible if we just believe. Disney movies wrapped us in the idea that good always triumphs evil, that happy ever after exists. We have become the generation of Beauty and the Beast, 101 Dalmatians, Dumbo and Snow White as children now have not heard of these or have watched them. Some of these movies have been recreated and released in high definition and on DVDs in the past few years, but the structure and themes of the movies stays the same. However, we never stop and think about the undertones in Disney movies. They contain abuse, violence, dysfunctional relationships, and gender stereotypes, which is not appropriate for children. They may not understand what abuse, violence, dysfunctional relationships, alcohol or gender stereotypes are at their ages but do we want them to think that it’s normal. When we think that little girls watch these movies where the female characters are controlled by man or need a man to watch over them, they are not creating good role models for them. Would we not want them to have a better understanding that women do not have to have a prince charming to be happy, women can be independent and have careers and yes find love but not give everything up so their prince charming has the control.
People today, need to recognize the importance of domestic violence. There are so many women that get physically abused and even killed every year. Women need to protect themselves more and stop going back to the abuser. The authority and court systems should be stricter on men to prevent domestic violence against women; there are so many men in this country that get away with so much because the women get scared to call for help and feel like they are prisoners.
A victim advocate is someone who helps people who are victims of a crime or sexual abuse. They are usually only referred to as victim advocates, however they can be called victim coordinators, victim specialists, or victim service providers.
Steubenville, Ohio is a town that was put on the map because of very publicized rape case. On August 11, 2012 a high school girl was repeatedly raped by her peers while incapacitated by alcohol; the whole ordeal was documented by other students via video cameras on phones and twitter. She was raped by two of her classmates, Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond. (Valenti) She was seen leaving the party she was at with four football player. During the car ride to one of the football player’s house the victim’s shirt was removed, revealing her breasts, and Mays’ used his fingers to penetrate her vagina, also called digital penetration. (Oppel, Jr.) She was photographed during this. Once at the house, she was drug to the basement where Richmond then tried to orally penetrate her and then digitally penetrated her vagina. She was photographed again during this. (Oppel, Jr.)
Imagery is a big component to most works of poetry. Authors strive to achieve a certain image for the reader to paint in their mind. Dickinson tries to paint a picture of ?death? in her own words. Thomas A. Johnson, an interpretive author of Dickinson's work, says that ?In 1863 Death came into full statue as a person. ?Because I could not stop for Death? is a superlative achievement wherein Death becomes one of the greatest characters of literature? (Johnson). Dickinson's picture to the audience is created by making ?Death? an actual character in the poem. By her constantly calling death either ?his? or ?he,? she denotes a specific person and gender. Dickinson also compares ?Death? to having the same human qualities as the other character in the poem. She has ?Death? physically arriving and taking the other character in the carriage with him. In the poem, Dickinson shows the reader her interpretation of what this person is going through as they are dying and being taken away by ?Death?. Dickinson gives images such as ?The Dews drew quivering and chill --? and ?A Swelling of the Ground --? (14, 18). In both of these lines, Dickinson has the reader conjure up subtle images of death. The ?quivering an chill? brings to the reader's mind of death being ...
Trauma relates to a type of damage to the mind that comes from a severely distressing event. A traumatic event relates to an experience or repeating events that overwhelmingly precipitated in weeks, months, or decades as one tries to cope with the current situations that can cause negative consequences. People’s general reaction to these events includes intense fear, helplessness or horror. When children experience trauma, they show disorganized or agitative behavior. In addition, the trigger of traumas includes some of the following, harassment, embarrassment, abandonment, abusive relationships, rejection, co-dependence, and many others. Long-term exposure to these events, homelessness, and mild abuse general psychological
Conflict theory emphasises that society and the criminal justice system all function on behalf of the rich and powerful, with the consequential policies intended at controlling the poor, often preserving a system where the upper class maintains power and all the other classes remain not only economically disadvantaged but are left almost powerless as well. (Greek, C 2005).
Physical Aggression This behavior consists of hitting, punching, slapping, pulling hair and pinching. Functions cited as task avoidance, denied access, attention or without clear antecedent. Recently at a graduation party, Alexis was upset that attention was going towards the brother and not her. This resulted in Alexis getting physically frustrated with mom by attempting to hit her. Staff member had to use verbal re-direction such as “Calm hands Alexis” to re-direct her from expressing any further behaviors.
In this paper, I’m going to apply the social learning theory, biological theory and individual psychopathology theory to domestic violence. Social learning theory says domestic violence is educated performance from close relatives which is modeled, embraced, and benefited. According to the second theory, “domestic violence is biological which can be determined by inheritances and alterations in the brain growth due to trauma (Wolfe).” In the third theory, individual psychopathology, domestic violence is a learned structure based off early childhood experiences. This theory is found to be more probable than the biological theory. Domestic abuse transpires when a person in a relationship or marriage attempts to dominate and control their significant other unwillingly. When the abuse contains physical violence it is called domestic violence. Beginning at the early stages of life domestic violence can transpire in relationship due to observational learning, trauma and physical abuse; these attributes explain three theories: the social learning theory, the biological theory, and the individual psychopathology theory.
Is violence in America a norm rather than an infection needing to be cured? Violence is so common that we witness it in our homes on the television, hear it in music on our radios, and it even lurks in the shadows of the public schools within our communities. On December 14, 2012, a young man opened gunfire amongst several innocent elementary children and teachers, killing them in cold blood. “Remembering Sandy Hook Elementary victims,” a webpage dedicated to twenty-six special victims of a particularly horrific tragedy caused by an act of violence (CNN).
Victimology is the scientific study of victimization and is an issue that affects millions of Americans each year. Anyone is at risk to be general target, but some people share similar traits and many criminologists seek to explain the facts that define the relationship between offender and the victim. This involves the study or investigation into the relationship type and level between the offenders and the victims of the crimes (Hagan, 2013). It works to create linkage between the criminal justice system and the victim to become a voice to advocate and secure justice for the victim. Most often violent crime is planned and executed by a person who is close to the victim. Victims are placed into four categories of victimization; The Victim
As long as there is gender bias, it will be reflected in rates of gender-based violence. For most of history, women have largely been on the receiving end of such violence. Women were, and in many cases are, seen as the lesser sex, with an extensive lack of rights granted to them in most historical and religious contexts. It is only in the 20th century that females began to see some of the rights males have always enjoyed extended to them. However, the fact remains that there is still a startling amount of violence against women, even in the developed world. The question Canadians need to ask is whether or not their government has done enough to help stop violence against women?
When people hear the word abuse, they tend to think of physical abuse. Many people do not know there are different types of abuse which can happen any place and at any time. No one should have to put up with being abused and they can do something about it (Types). When people hear abuse, they tend to think it is women who get abused. This is a stereotype. Even though it is less common for a male to be abused, they still are. An example of this stereotype is found on a website which says,
Throughout Emily Dickinson’s poetry there is a reoccurring theme of death and immortality. The theme of death is further separated into two major categories including the curiosity Dickinson held of the process of dying and the feelings accompanied with it and the reaction to the death of a loved one. Two of Dickinson’s many poems that contain a theme of death include: “Because I Could Not Stop For Death,” and “After great pain, a formal feeling comes.”
According to scientists, photosynthesis is “the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct.” ("pho•to•syn•the•sis,")
