Great Gatsby 3
Write an essay about the character and function of Nick Carraway.
Despite the title, Nick Carraway is the first character we meet, and
appropriately his role in The Great Gatsby is crucial; without him the
story would lack balance and insight. The first chapter is primarily
dedicated in establishing his personality and position in the book, then
moving on to Tom and Daisy. Nick is our‘ guide, path finder’
in The Great Gatsby; he relates the story as he has seen it and from what
others have told him. He strives at all times to be objective, his
comments are balanced, as he says just in the first page of the
book–‘ I’m inclined to reserve all judgements’.
His objectivity is reinforced throughout to us by his scorn of
Gatsby– he thoroughly disapproves of him– he‘
represented everything for which I have unaffected scorn’. Yet
there is something–‘ some heightened sensitivity to the
promises of life’,‘ an extraordinary gift for hope’
that is attractive to Nick, and requires him to make several attempts at
describing it. He registers contempt for much of what Gatsby stands
for– the falseness, the criminality, but still he likes him. His
ability to laugh at Gatsby and his false airs‘ What was that? . . .
The picture of Oxford?’ shows he’s neither charmed nor wholly
disgusted by Gatsby. Nick sees him as the best of a‘ rotten
crowd’, his approval is always relative– compared to Tom and
Daisy his dream like innocence is attractive, though twisted into an
impossible goal and only nearly achieved by criminality. But compared to
Tom’s ruthless attitude to Myrtle and Wilson, Daisy’s
careless abandonment of Gatsby and ultimately their complete inability to
see their wrong–‘ if you think I didn’t have my share
of suffering . . . I sat down and cried like a baby’– put
Gatsby in a much fairer light. As Nick says, Gatsby was‘ worth the
whole damn bunch put together’.
His amusingly contemptuous remarks show his sense of humour, and although
he is straight-laced, we are not bored by him. We are told of his
age– thirty, which makes us take his opinions seriously, as he is
not some immature unworldly man.
Nick is introduced directly, but Gatsby remains a distant character for a
good while. The establishment of Nick’s reflective, tolerant
personality is essential, as are his limitations, so we don’t just
dismiss him as Fitzgerald’s mouthpiece. The fact that he
disapproves of Gatsby so early on, helps us to go along with his
judgements when he tells us of Gatsby and unfolds the story.
Our first mysterious glimpse of Gatsby prepares us for much of what is to
H0 - There is no statistically significant difference in touching behaviour between male and female couples when observed in social situation.
Test video 1 & 2 confirmed the theory that by invading one’s personal comfort zone or the norm of society that it triggers an individual to react in a certain way. Our subjects confirmed this theory by staring at the individuals invading their space, leaning their leg away, shifting away, and even moving entirely in an attempt to regain their intimate space.

Hall (as explained in Guardo, 1969) has dedicated part of his research to the cultural aspect of the use of personal space, by highlighting that there are differences among different cultures. He noted that ‘culture shock’ is the failure to interpret certain cues in communication between people from different cultures. For instance, certain cultures use a kiss on the cheek as a greeting, whereas other are more distant and when met with such a greeting might act bewildered. Another aspect is sex differences. Bruno and Muzzolini (2013) showed that the effect of arm length can play a role in interactions. In their study, it has been shown that same sex individuals keep distance proportional to their arm length, whereas different, but smaller effect is seen in opposite sex situations. Male individuals let female closer than female individuals allowed with males. The authors suggested that such differences may be coined in different social
Some risk factors cannot be changed such as age, race, and gender. A person 's risk increases as they get older. Approximately 1 out of 8 women are at risk of developing breast cancer are younger than 55. Approximately 2 out of 3 women are at risk of developing breast cancer who are older than 55 (American Cancer Society, 2014). To decrease this rate, women need more timely follow ups and access to high quality treatments (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). Men can develop breast cancer, but this disease is more common among women than men. (American Cancer Society, 2015).
Some children are orphaned for various reasons. Some children are orphaned because their parents are deceased. Others are dropped off at an orphanage because their parents cannot care for their basic needs of life. Tree-ear is a Korean orphan in the book, A Single Shard. He is being raised by Crane-man who is crippled, old man. Ruckel, a Romanian orphan, is an orphan, who lives in three different places, in an article about how not having parents or not knowing who children’s parents are can have an effect on brain development. Although orphans share many of the same experiences, each one has his or her own story.

The reactions of people when you break a social norm can vary quite drastically. Sometimes the reactions are quite large and other times they are rather subtle. The reactions typically vary based on what norm you break and how strong of a norm it is. In the case of invading people’s personal space, I did not receive and intense reactions. All of the reactions I received were subtle. Not ma...
The next few observations involve his interactions with Person B. Person A was consistently reaching across the table and holding Person B’s hand. Whenever possible, he was touching Person B in some way—whether holding her hand or rubbing her arm. Another observation was his use of personal space. Upon walking to the table, Person A had his arm around Person B and was holding Person B close. There was no personal space needed for Person A in this instance. A fourth o...
An orphanage is no place for a child. A child should be able to play and be happy, but the orphans of Afghanistan have more to worry about. They have to worry if they’ll have food to fill their stomachs. They’re scared that they will never have a true home. They are sad that they will never get to see their families again, and unfortunately, some of them don’t even remember their
In these lines the woman hears these voices. Stevens uses these voices to nicely let his reads no there is no god. If the woman was to visit the tomb of Christ she would not be greeted by sprits because they don’t exist. The woman comes to her reality that tomb of Christ is nothing more than a place for the entire dead nothing special. Stevens uses the last two lines to break it to his readers that they are alone in life there is no supernatural authority figure making sure were good to one another. The last line tells them they can’t run away from this reality .instead they should embrace it. Stevens wants his readers to be good to themselves and to enjoy their lives they should enjoy these freedom. Stevens used Sunday morning to introduce his godless reality to his readers and because he did it in such a plausible way he may have swayed some of his readers
Cancer is a disease that affects many different parts of the body and a various number of people. When it comes to women, breast cancer is the leading type of cancer they may encounter. Throughout our world, hundreds upon thousands of children are kept in orphanages. These children, who have no home, no parents, and no siblings to play with, are kept in a place where all they have left is their childhood; and even that is taken away from them in these living hells. Most people would define the word orphanage as a public or private institution for the care and protection of children without parents. However, this definition is far from what orphanages actually are. Orphanages do not institute care and protection for the orphans, but instead abuse them and make their lives miserable. But this abuse does not only restrict to physical abuse; mental, emotional, and sexual abuses are also included in their daily lives. With poor and squalid facilities, cribs to sleep in for 11 year olds, minimal food to eat, and inhumane care, these helpless children have no choice but to bear this treatment. Nevertheless, there are orphanages out there that do care for their children. They give them proper food, clothing, and have a clean environment, but still the children are neglected and not given the love and nurturing that they need and deserve. Poor countries like Bulgaria are not capable of giving their orphans the proper environment to live in. The nurses and staff of orphanages are not meeting their responsibilities as proper care-takers either. Orphanages were originally made to give children without parents care and love, but now the meaning and reality of orphanages have changed to a nightmare.
There are various perceptions on what constitutes personal space in different countries and cultures around the world. Personal space is the means of man’s affiliation with other people, society, and the surrounding culture. Personal space refers to the bubble, or appropriate distance, around a human being that determines how close individuals stand together during interactions without being offensive. While personal space is usually respected and instinctive during conversation, anxiety or fear can occur when this space is invaded. Furthermore, the intensity of the arousal depends on the relationship between the two conversationalists (Trolley, “Personal Space”). In essence, there is a “nurture” component that is learned through one’s environment since differences exist between cultures.
