I. What are "energy bars"?
Definition and Contents:
An energy bar is a convenient, fortified snack-food containing a blend of simple and complex carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber, and vitamins and minerals. The primary source of protein in energy bars usually comes from milk and the fiber comes from grains and oats. Some bars also contain additional herbs, such as ginseng and guarana, "to help provide maximum energy" and to stimulate the central nervous system (http://s2.com.etj/ wn/sportsbars.html). Others include sodium and potassium phosphate to increase oxygen consumption capacity and to prevent lactic acid buildup in the muscles. The size of an energy bar varies with each brand and can range anywhere from one ounce to more than five ounces. The majority contain 100 to 300 calories and get most of these calories (at least 60 percent) from carbohydrates (Walsh 1997). The bars are usually easy to digest and come in a wide array of flavors and textures. They are advertised by most manufacturers as an "optimum energy fuel" and are used mainly as a way to replenish the body's energy stores as they are being depleted (http://s2.com/etj/wn/sportsbars.html).
Who are they for? Where are they found?
Energy bars are most often associated with top athletes and endurance sports, such as bicycling and running. Recently, however, they have started to attract outdoor enthusiasts, participants of team sports, and casual exercisers (McEvoy 1994). They are becoming so popular that even overweight individuals are eating them as a low-fat meal substitute (Runner's World 1994). Today they can be found almost anywhere: in sporting good stores, pharmacies, health food shops, and even several department stores (Lobb 1995).
When do you eat them?
Energy bars can be consumed before an event to ensure sufficient levels of muscle and liver glycogen (stored carbohydrate), during an event to stabilize or maintain blood sugar levels, or after an event to replace expended nutrients and to maximize recovery. Some people also eat them as a snack or meal replacement throughout the day. Specific times and amounts obviously vary for each person (http://s2.com/etj/wn/sportsbars.html).
II. Two main types of energy bars:
1. High-carbo group
Most energy bars are placed in this group because they are high in carbohydrates and low in proteins and fats. Producers of these bars argue that a high portion of carbohydrates provides "a superior source of fuel for endurance performance and that the fewer fat calories you ingest in a pre-workout, the better".
Energy drinks affect your body in ways people don’t think about. My experiment was created to find out what happens to your heart rate after putting an energy drink into your body. Some of the things I found by doing some research is that you can go to the hospital just for drinking an energy drink alone. Energy drinks contain more caffeine than what the label says. Based on this research a hypothesis was created. The hypothesis was, if you drink an energy drink, then your heart rate will increase due to the amount of caffeine it contains. This hypothesis made the most sense because caffeine has been labeled by doctors to not be the safest substance.
Additionally, Wasserstrom even goes on to say that sex roles are analogous to human slavery. Wasserstrom expresses how sex roles are oppressive and how they serve no use and no legitimate place in a just society. He states this because, according to him, sex roles forces people to lives which restrict excessively the opportunities of these individuals...
I read the book The Reconstruction: A Documentary History of the South after the War: 1865-1877 by James P. Shenton. James P. Shenton arrived at the University of Columbia at the age of 21 as a college freshman on the G.I. Bill. He finished his B.A. in three years and continued to finish his M.A. in 1950. In 1954 he finished his Ph. D all his accomplishments are in the subject of history. Professor Shenton arrived at Columbia University and never transferred anywhere else and eventually became a Professor on their campus. The context of this book is the years 1865 through 1877 which are the years after the civil war. This book made it a bit difficult to understand the order of the reconstruction of the south after the war but it did contain interesting and accurate information.
Today many people are substituting normal meals with energy bars in hopes of losing weight. These energy bars seem to be an easy way to diet without having to hunt down the proper nutritional meals; the meal is already prepared for you in the bar. There are a few questions being raised about this method of dieting however. The issue addressed in this paper is the use of energy bars that either have low carbohydrate levels or that use lower glycemic index carbohydrates. The idea behind using an energy bar of this type for dieting is to lower the levels of insulin in the blood, reduce cholesterol levels, and prevent the drop in blood glucose that is thought to be associated with feeling hungry.
Each bottle contains high doses of vitamin B, caffeine, and energy blend. "This is a no-nonsense drink," Sperber said. "It is not a fashion statement. It doesn't have a cool name; it is just a simple grab-and-go product to help busy adults when they can't afford a letdown." Each 2- ounce bottle contains zero grams of sugar, about the same amount of caffeine as in a small coffee, and 4 calories. This drink also contains about a dozen ingredients that have been broken down into vitamin B, and the manufacturer lists it as the “energy blend.” The text of this energy drink implies that it can be drunk within seconds. When the need for an extra boost you don’t want to wait, it’s easy and fast. According to Animal Planet, sharks, on average, kill ten humans per year, while humans kill eighty-eight to one hundred million sharks per year. Humans hunt sharks for their meat, internal organs, skin, and primarily for their fins in order to make products such as lubricants, make-up, and mainly shark fin soup. The growing Chinese economy has cause an increase in the demand for shark fin soup. Some species of sharks have reduced over 90% in population for a bowl of soup that has no scientifically proven nutritional value. The poaching of sharks as seen in the shark fin trade should cease because it causes a collapse of the marine ecosystem and endangers the shark species.
Energy Bar Overview The energy bar market grew from a grass roots effort focused on the consumer base of performance athletes. These athletes usually obtained products at competitive events that were geared towards the everyday consumer. The build up of this market is attributed to PowerBar, but there was significant contribution from others. PowerBar and the Market PowerBar began as a company seeking to create a performance-enhancing food that marathoners could consume during an energy-draining race.
America has gone through many hardships and struggles since coming together as a nation involving war and changes in the political system. Many highly regarded leaders in America have come bestowing their own ideas and foundation to provide a better life for “Americans”, but no other war or political change is more infamous than the civil war and reconstruction. Reconstruction started in 1865 and ended in 1877 and still to date one of the most debated issues in American history on whether reconstruction was a failure or success as well as a contest over the memory, meaning, and ending of the war. According to, “Major Problems in American History” David W. Blight of Yale University and Steven Hahn of the University of Pennsylvania take different stances on the meaning of reconstruction, and what caused its demise. David W. Blight argues that reconstruction was a conflict between two solely significant, but incompatible objectives that “vied” for attention both reconciliation and emancipation. On the other hand Steven Hahn argues that former slaves and confederates were willing and prepared to fight for what they believed in “reflecting a long tradition of southern violence that had previously undergirded slavery” Hahn also believes that reconstruction ended when the North grew tired of the 16 year freedom conflict. Although many people are unsure, Hahn’s arguments presents a more favorable appeal from support from his argument oppose to Blight. The inevitable end of reconstruction was the North pulling federal troops from the south allowing white rule to reign again and proving time travel exist as freed Africans in the south again had their civil, political, and economical position oppressed.
“Energy drinks” have come into vogue over the past several years all over the world, especially among adolescents (Seifert, Schaechter, Hershorin, & Lipshultz, 2011). According to ReportLinker (2012), the size of the energy drinks market has grown by 60% between 2008 and 2012, and the American sales of energy drinks were $8.6 billion in 2012, which is about twelve times their figure of a decade earlier (Buzz, 2013). It is even said that energy drinks are the fastest growing beverage market in the United States. (Seifert et al., 2011). What is the definition of energy drinks? According to Seifert et al. (2011), energy drinks “may contain caffeine, taurine, sweeteners, herbal supplements and other ingredients and are distinct from sports drinks and vitamin waters” (p512). These days, brands of energy drinks have been diversified, including the market leader RedBull, that sold more than 5.2 billion cans in 165 countries in 2012 (Pangarkar, & Agarwal, 2013). A study indicates “28% of 12 to 14 year olds, 31% of 12 to 17 year olds, and 34% of 18 to 24 year olds reported regularly consuming of energy drinks” (Seifert et al., 2011, p514). However, as the popularity of energy drinks surges, the number of accidents involving the consumption of energy drinks has been on the rise. (Buzz, 2013). According to Energy (2013), the number of energy drink exposures reported to the Poison Centers has been more than 3000 for three years in a row since 2011, of which more than half were those who are 18 or younger. Mukherjee (2013) reported that in December 2011, a girl in Maryland died in cardiac arrest, allegedly after drinking two 700-milliliter cans of energy drinks within 24 hours. U.S. Food and Drug Administration [USFDA] (2012) revea...

This paper will explore the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and his companion and friend Dr. John Watson. What is the relationship between Holmes and Watson? Are they compatible or are their differences to great for them to overcome. Looking at how they work together will also be a key factor in how well the relationship works between the two of them. Do their own interests and abilities get in the way? Does the time period in which they live factor into the environment of their communication styles?
For Sherlock Holmes, his partner in crime is Dr. John H. Watson. Not only is he a trusted friend, but also he is Holmes’ associate and the first person narrator of the Sherlock tales. The stories of Sherlock Holmes are a collection of short stories and fictional novels created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. These stories are based on a famous and most notorious detective all throughout London, Sherlock Holmes. Along his side, Dr. Watson narrates his and Holmes’ detective cases and reveals Sherlock’s abilities and knowledge of solving cases and fighting deadly crimes. For the duration of the stories, Watson and Holmes share a particular relationship where Holmes verbally dominates Watson, “You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is very clear” (Doyle 241). When he isn’t insulting Dr. Watson he talks about how much he relies on his partner, “I am lost without my Boswell” (Doyle 243).
Alcoholic energy drinks should not be legally sold in the United States because mixing alcohol and caffeine for consumption leads to dangerous consequences. Caffeine does not compensate for the effects of alcohol. Caffeine is a stimulant drug while alcohol is a depressant, and the two drugs do not cancel the effects of each other, although that idea is often misconstrued by drinkers. Consuming alcoholic energy drinks often leads to decreased perception of intoxication, impaired cognitive functioning, and increased risk for erratic behavior such as drunk driving or engaging in sexual behavior. Energy drinks contain harmful ingredients and often result in hospitalization if too much is consumed. Mixing energy drinks with alcohol is a recipe for disaster. Introduction needs work
As a full-time college student, it can be hard trying to balance a schedule in which consists of school, work, parenting (in some occasions), maintaining a social life and getting enough sleep, and then repeat the same process the following day. Which can be tiring on the long run for instance, for me to maintain active an entire day, I know I at least need to nap for just a few minutes. However, I seemed to notice that, it does not seem to be the same case for many students. Based from what I have observed in my evening class, is that many of my classmates fight their lack of energy with a can of energy drink, whether it is a Monster, a Red Bull or a Rock Star. That is why I am interested on whether a student’s lifestyle may influence the
Do people actually understand the harm that energy drinks cause the human body? Millions of people around the world believe that energy drinks help them become more energized, but in reality they can cause more harm than good to the human body. More than 20,000 people have reported that they were hospitalized because of energy drinks, yet people continue to drink them because they became so addicted to the taste of the drink (ER). Energy drinks can lead to high blood pressure, cancer, reproductive problems, insomnia, heart palpitations and many more problems. Even energy drinks that say they are sugar free can do even more harm to your body.
