Contemporary technology in the form of electronically managed interactive telecommunications is compatible with the goals and values of the humanities. For Marx, machine-work tended toward being mechanically routine, repetitive, deskilled, and trivialized. In the case of discourse, the same criticism has been made of computerized communication. Immediacy is not authorial presence, but the experience of textuality that is maximized by participation in interactive communication. Bulletin board technology inverts the relationship between the degree of communicative interaction and the number of communicants. It is both mass communication and individualized participation. From the point of view of a theory of discourse, the bulletin board system is unique in that the ratio between the number of participants and the individualized nature of the interaction is directly proportional. There has been, however, the criticism that technology is dehumanizing. We will consider and respond to this criticism in light of the thought of Marx, Marcuse, Lyotard and Heidegger.

People all around agree that technology is changing how we think, but is it changing us for the better? Clive Thompson definitely thinks so and this book is his collection of why that is. As an avid fiction reader I wasn’t sure this book would captivate me, but the 352 pages seemingly flew past me. The book is a whirlwind of interesting ideas, captivating people, and fascinating thoughts on how technology is changing how we work and think.

This is especially relevant to our current societal trajectory where the hand of technology is omnipresent. In this not so distant future portrayal of the world, the boundaries between man and technology have been erased, and the concept of privacy is defunct. It is a world where humans are more connected and in sync with their gizmos than fellow humans. Emotions are no longer defined as an instinctive, intuitive feeling, but a commodity that has been monetized by reducing it to binary code and installed in artificially intelligent operating systems. If this is the future powered by man’s technological genius, then it should give us all pause and make us think twice before we decide to distract ourselves with gadgets in the face of human interaction.
How is technology seen today? The current conception of technology is that it is an activity of man toward some end. Heidegger wants to replace this correct conception with a true, free relationship in order to “open our human existence to the essence of technology” (QCT). By removing man’s insistent nature that sees only what is closest and most obvious, he remove his biases and preserves his “own special nature--that he is a meditative being” (DoT). By reminding man to think without insistence, we thereby bring him closer to the distant truth, that Being has multiple appearances within a single being, not just what appears ready-at-hand. Albert Borgmann follows the general project by Heidegger to see how technology has harmful effects on humanity and to determine how it can be reformed. Borgmann shares Heidegger’s view that modern technology is starkly different from premodern technology in its pattern of disclosing the world to human beings. Borgmann agrees that a sort of ethical reform must be undertaken to limit technological ways of living from dominating the lives of individuals and to keep technology in its place. His proposal for a direction of reform first takes cues from Heidegger but then asserts the need for different tactics.
Technology has improved drastically in the past few years, improving society a large amount, but what if these new electronics are not actually improving it but instead making it worse? As time progresses technology increases and improves. However, this progression could pose as a serious problem for generations to come, and New York University department chair of communication arts Neil Postman expresses this concern in his 1992 book, Technopoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology. In the opening of Postman’s book he expresses that technology is indeed our friend because technology provides our society with fast and easy convenience and accessibility. As with most other things, there are always two sides to everything and Postman notes, that “of course, there is a dark side to this friend” referring to technology (Postman, 1992). Many people do not address the negative sides to technology and just turn a blind eye to them so it is refreshing to have someone point them out and discuss the issues technology possess on our society.

Today we live in a world where everything is practically automatic. We can refer to today’s society as the “technologically civilized” society. There’s been a drastic change from the older days till now. As an example, in the past people had to wash and dry dirty dishes by hand, or write a letter to get in contact with someone. Nowadays, we can push a simple button to start the dishwasher, or give that certain someone a phone call or send an email. Technology can provide the benefit of giving us a simpler, stress-free life or it can become a misfortune we face everyday. Unfortunately, today technology has overcome our lives and we have become too dependent on it.
While critical social theorists have included discussion of technology as part of their frameworks of analysis, historically, one must look to the philosophical tradition for exhaustive thought pertaining to technology. Feenberg, trained as an academic philosopher, seeks to bridge this divide between social theory and philosophy. In giving credence to both the philosophical perspectives of Heidegger and Husserl and the critical sociological approaches of Marcuse and others at the Frankfurt School, Feenberg offers a perspective on technology unparalleled within contemporary discourse. This blending of social theory and philosophy is very much in line with the tradition of German intellectual thought and indicative of the impact Marcuse had as mentor during Feenberg’s graduate studies at the University of California, San Diego.

Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) was a German philosopher that argues in “The Question Concerning Technology," the essence of technology; especially that modern technology is essentially dangerous. He believes that modern technology forces us to misunderstand the world around us, including ourselves. As a result, modern technology takes away essential purposes such as freedom. This freedom revolves around man’s self-knowledge and truth. Specifically, I will introduce and discuss Heidegger’s argument of modern technology “standing-reserve”. By this, technology is ready to be controlled by humans. In the mean time, this unused technology is thought of as being “on call” until there is a need for its further order.
