Technology Swells Ocean Exploration
Railroads and computers.
So, not only what to these have in common, but also what are they doing in paper about computers? Well to start, the Professor did say to have fun with the paper! Secondly, the guns show how long technology takes to evolve and than how quick evolution can happen. It took centuries to go from smooth bore to rifled bore in the guns. Flintlock gun were still being used at the start of the American Civil War, 1861. By the time the war ended, 4 years later, percussion guns were in style. The Gatling gun showed up around 1867, it was replaced in under 100 years with the .50 caliber machine gun.
Thirdly, railroads and computers are a very interesting study on how quick technology can advance, the problems it encounters, and the impact it has on society. The first American train made its run in 1830. Less than 40 years later the transcontinental railroad was completed. The rail companies had to overcome problems never before encountered: switchbacks up hills, grading, etc. The impact on the America society was, and still is, huge. The computer technology has basically followed the same timeframe, overcame unknown problems, and is having a huge impact on society.
Looking at these two comparisons is very interesting. As a Maritime Historian an understanding of past technology is important in determining a time frame of an incident. Plus, an understanding of how to use todays’ technology to assist in finding and recording of the past is an absolute necessity. Computers hold the key to major research projects by way of technology, Internet, and E-Mail. As a Maritime Explorer advances in technology will continue to be used to find, track and understand the water world around us.
Clive Cussler wrote, "We have mapped and photographed almost every square inch of the moon, but we have viewed less than one percent of what is covered by water". The computer will be of the same great benefit when it comes to the exploration of the oceans as the computer has benefited the exploration of outer space. This benefit will be to two major forms; finding and understanding the past (cause and effect), finding the as yet unknown and determining its benefits. As any historian will say, we need to know where we came from in order to understand where we are going.
What technological advances over the centuries have led to the exploration of the oceans?
Teslik, Lee. "Backgrounder: The U.S. Economic Stimulus Plan." The New York Times, January 27, 2009.
Based on two stories which we learnt these days: “Harrison Bergeron” and “There will come soft rains”, we can see that in the future, technology affects us a lot. Our life will mainly depend on technology, let us see how this changed us from the stories.
3.12 Rolling: A producing method that forms threads on screw shafts by mistreatment pressure. Rotating dies containing desired thread profile are ironed against a blank shaft to displace material and make thread forms.
When asking people about what characteristics they think of when they think of a hero the most common answers would be doing good deeds and not allowing evil to flourish. This is what we have been made to believe. One of the first images that come to mind when the word hero is mentioned is a superhero. An image of Batman or Superman is likely, one who is good natured and conquers evil as it appears. Just doing good deeds or not committing evil sins is not enough. First you would have to distinguish the difference between an evil and a good action. The line between good and evil is so thin that specific attributes and certain actions are constantly being exchanged back and forth. We cannot decide as a society what is good and what is evil. A modern day example would be when the United States made the decision to bomb Japan during World War II. For Americans celebration ensued as it was thought to be a decisive moment of victory. Those who were involved in t...
Science and technology go hand in hand. Scientific discoveries result in technology advancements for the people. In today’s technological world, it has progressed to a whole new level. This type of modernization opened doors for new and improved computers, cell phones, medical treatment, and machinery. In a reference article, “Computers and the Internet in America: Modern World” by Christopher Cumo, he discusses how computers and the internet have impacted human life since the 20th century. Technology has always been a part of society and as
Technology is a portion of everyday life. It affects how business is conducted, teaching, learning, and receiving information. Good or bad, everyone uses technology every day. There are many items people have on them on a daily basis, most people would be hard pressed to be without. Technology changed American Lives from 1900 to 1945. At the turn of the 20th century, new technological advances such as electricity, flight, and the gasoline engine found expression in new modes of transportation and communication. How did peoples’ daily lives change as a result of new inventions and technologies? How did the United States change in response to new mobility and improved communications? When we look at some of the most influential inventions or technological advancements during the early 1900’s. What was the impact to the everyday lives of American people and how did these advances change the global economy, military and how The United States rose to prominence as a world power because of the economic and military power gained by these advances? What are the positive and negative factors that some of these advances may have had as well as some of the controversy that surrounds many of these advances? During my research, I found it amazing how far our country had come in 45 years. I was intrigued by the historical events that lead to the innovation and discoveries of the early 20th century. To think of how life was before these innovations is almost unfathomable. Our journey will travel back in time, to a time of simple times, of hard times and of a time of family and community I feel we have all lost as a result of some more recent technological advances. The turn of the century was more impactful than I had originally known and this ...
Each year millions of high school students start thinking about which college they want to attend. With an annual sticker price of “$21,228”, students know a college education is not cheap. Students understand that tuition prices are not stagnant “Between 2003–04 and 2013–14, prices for undergraduate tuition, fees, room, and board at public institutions rose 34 percent, and prices at private nonprofit institutions rose 25 percent, after adjustment for inflation” Parents and students often wonder what the cause for these increases are. Unfortunately, there is no one simple answer. The painful truth is the reason for rising tuition prices is the result of several factors.
In the history of literature, a person or some people that make a positive change can be recognized as a hero. Heroism has various aspects that the readers look for, such as courage, bravery, selflessness, humility, patience, caring, and other characteristics that make a normal person stand out to be a hero. Although, in reality, heroes have normal human being characteristics as well. There are many different kinds of heroes in literature like juror #8 in “12 Angry Men” who had to stand alone for what he believed was right, while the odds were against him. Also, another type of hero could be the bravest, slaying monster type of hero like Odysseus in The Odyssey. A last type of hero is the hero that is the most normal, and has plenty human characteristics.
Fueled by the 2008 recession, the automotive industry suffered a crisis that hurt the United States’ national economy.
Technology has become an element which is as important as food to people nowadays. Everything that we do in our daily lives requires technology from complex machineries to something as simple as turning on a light bulb. The amazing thinkers behind these life-changing innovations include Alexander Graham Bell; the telephone inventor, Thomas Alva Edison; the man who lit up the world and many more. Have you ever thought why we say ‘hello’ every time we answer a call from the telephone? It is because Bell’s wife was named Hello! Over the years, the evolution of technology has come a very long way as time flies. There is massive difference between the olden days and modern time due to technology. Last time, people find entertainment just by staring into the skies and nature but now we get to laugh over graphics on a glass screens while lazing on our favourite
A medieval hero has different characteristics from a classical hero. A medieval hero must be loyal and obedient of hierarchy. He must be a man who is seen as having good moral character. A medieval hero must also follow rules of chivalry, dress, courtesy, and code of conduct (Norman).
Oceans are such so vast that people underestimate the impact their actions —seeming so insignificant— have on them. Humans have by and large taken the oceans for granted; not considering how important a healthy ocean is to our survival. A popular mind-set is that the oceans are a bottomless supply of fish, natural resources, and an infinite waste dump. There are myriad reasons why the oceans should be saved and the most obvious one is marine life. With 71% of the Earth being covered by water, it is obvious that sea creatures are predominant form of life, making up 80% of the species of life on Earth. However, as important as marine life is, that is not the only reason why saving the oceans is crucial. The ocean floor provides natural resources such as, oil, natural gas, petroleum, minerals, medications, and ingredients for foods and products. The economic benefits of the oceans are huge and significant, as well. Fishing and fish products have provided employment to 38 million people and have generated about $124 billion in economic benefits. However, oceans are on the verge of crisis, marine life, natural resources, transportation, the economy, and important ingredients are at risk due to overfishing, pollution, and acidification. Thus, in this essay I will argue that, oceans are not impervious to human activity and threatening the health of the ocean threatens the health of humanity, since oceans key to our survival.
Throughout history technology has been one of the most defining aspects of any time period. Technological advancement is often utilized to increase the human condition making life easier and increasing a societies chance of survival however what follows is not only a technological advancement, but also a change in the way societies interact and behave. Weather it be the creation of science during the age of reason, the advancement in communication and transportation in the industrial revolution, or the discovery of farming in the Neolithic revolution, each advancement in technology has led to a significant change in the political and social standards of society. Throughout history advancement in technology has marked a progression in society.
The oceans need to be protected because it is where life began and if not taken care of, life as we know it will end. When dangerous substances go into the ocean, ecosystems are suffer and become endangered along with lives of people and of marine life. Surfrider Foundation recognizes the importance of protecting and preserving the quality and biodiversity of the world's coasts because they are truly irreplaceable. There is also historical evidence of ocean pollution being present in the past, but the problem still lingers today. Heal the Bay discovered that,“Did you know there is a DDT and PCB hot spot off the coast of Palos Verdes? This superfund site (which indicates it's one of the most polluted places in the United States), is left over from a 1930's era chemical plant. Because DDT takes so long to break down in the marine environment, it persists to this day, contaminating certain species of fish. There are also highly polluted sediments in the Long Beach area, a sign of the heavy shipping in the port. Heal the Bay works on developing effective capping and removal plans to keep those toxins from spreading” (Heal the Bay). DDT is still highly concentrated in the South Bay area and still contaminating different species of fish. Even after more than 80 years DDT, a toxic insecticide, is still very concentrated and during upwellings, DDT particles come back up and continue to harm marine life. If humans are careless about what is thrown on the floor or sprayed on lawns, it can lead to disastrous affects when it comes to the condition of the ocean's ecosystems, and can endanger life itself leading to a problem that only we can mend.
The biggest and easiest seen change that computers have had on today’s society can be seen in the workplace. Before computers became an office tool and were made available to the average employee, paperwork and sharing information in an office setting was done by many different individuals constantly filing and looking up figures. Now a computer can store large amounts of information that is readily available to virtually anyone with the click of a mouse button. One person can complete a job that in a time before computers would take many. Computers have made file cabinets and libraries almost obsolete. Businesses can share information nation or even world wide in a matter of seconds. For example, a word document file can be sent from an office in New York to an office in Los Angeles in under a minute, in the past this same information would have taken a week to be sent through the mail. Computers have changed the way that factories are run too. On an assembly line, before computers every job, no matter how easy or difficult, had to be done by an employee. Now, however, computers run machines and do most of these tasks.
