Writing From a Technical Standpoint
At first, I didn’t really understand the concept of this assignment. I thought, this is going to be pretty easy. I’ll just get some glue, and write some words on a piece of construction paper. After all, glue is just sugar and water, and paper is just a tree—sounds natural enough! However, after I sat down and thought about it, glue and paper are far from natural. Someone mixed the glue, put it into a container, and shipped it to the store. The paper was made from a tree; but technology, machinery, and people were essential to its existence. Therefore, I needed to put my brain to work and find something untouched by man, technology, or machinery. How about grass, cement, dirt, and water? All of these elements seemed pretty natural to me, so I ventured into my front yard and started making words out of water from my hose onto the driveway. Then I realized someone mixed that cement and laid it—unnatural. The water has been channeled to my hose from some type of technology—unnatural. My dad planted the grass; the dirt was bought from the store, and laid in front of my house by my mother; man planted all the trees.
I realized my project had to be conducted where humans had not interfered. For example, if I used water, I would have to travel to a natural source of water like a lake or ocean. If I wanted to use trees or grass, I would have to find them in a natural setting like a forest or woods. And that’s just what I did. I went to the woods not far from my house, and I searched around looking for an easy way to create something as simple as a word. I then came upon them—dandelions. Man has not planted these “weeds”; rather, they have grown out of the ground “naturally”. Not only were the dandelions quick and easy to use, they were also kind of pretty!
Although the woods would be considered a natural setting, the grass I use for my project was not necessarily the most “natural” substance. It seemed to me that someone had planted that grass, and mowed it frequently, because it was very short and level. But the dandelions worked out wonderfully.
From the lone hiker on the Appalachian Trail to the environmental lobby groups in Washington D.C., nature evokes strong feelings in each and every one of us. We often struggle with and are ultimately shaped by our relationship with nature. The relationship we forge with nature reflects our fundamental beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. The works of timeless authors, including Henry David Thoreau and Annie Dillard, are centered around their relationship to nature.
One thing Koelsch sure didn’t leave out of his article was anecdotes. He used a plethora of anecdotes to try to convince the reader just how important writing and communication skills are in shaping your career as an engineer. I have mixed feelings on the anecdotes used in this paper; I do think Koelsch use of anecdotes was somewhat effective in proving his argument. On one hand I like how he tries to appeal to reader through more of a personal level through using stories to convince the reader, but on the other hand I believe he didn’t appeal to the audience as well as he

The short story “ To Build a Fire” and the excerpt from “Left for Dead” demonstrates naturalisms in many ways. For example the behavior of each character showed how deadly nature is. The unnamed man in ¨To Build a Fire” attitude towards nature was very ignorant. He didn't acknowledge how cold it was ultimately killing him. Since he didn't pay attention to nature he wasn't as prepared as much as he should have been. He only brought one meal making it very dangerous if he gets lost and needs to find more food. He didnt take the old man's advice and travel with a partner with such cold conditions. Also he could have wore more to keep warm and brought more supplies in case of an emergency. On the other hand Beck Weathers always noticed the dangers of nature. Beck Weathers loves hiking but he also does extensive research on the mountains he climbs. The reason why Beck was able to survive was because how well he knows nature. He was able to survive a storm that came out of nowhere on his own by climbing down to the last camp he was at and burrowing into the ground and using his coat to keep him warm. Beck was very prepared for the forces of nature with his jumpsuit and supplies which
The article “The Painless Way to Technical Writing” has some useful tips about technical writing and among them the tip to write on a part of a project is most useful. The hardest part of writing is the overwhelming feeling the writer gets about the whole process. Looking at the whole project as one assignment makes the tasks seems very difficult. Instead, the approach to break down the writing project into smaller tasks would make the job much easier. Reading this tip in the article reminded me of the similar strategies that I have recently read in two self improvement books. The first book titled Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time by Brian Tracy. One of the strategies the book talks about
When a young boy is found brutally murdered in a small Prussian town called Konitz, once part of Germany, now part of Poland, the Christians residing in the town lash out by inciting riots and demonstrations. Citing the incident as an act of Jewish ritual murder, better known as blood libel, Christians rendered blame on the Jews. Helmut Walser’s Smith, The Butcher’s Tale, details the murder account and the malicious consequences of superstitious belief combined with slander and exaggerated press propaganda. Foreshadowing the persecution of Jews which would take place three decades later, Smith analyzes and explains the cause and effect of anti-Semitism in Imperial Germany at the turn of the century. Utilizing Smith’s book as a primary source,
When reflecting and writing on Eiseley’s essay and the “magical element”, I balk. I think to myself, “What magic?”, and then put pen to page. I dubiously choose a kiddie pool to draw inspiration from, and unexpectedly, inspiration flows into me. As I sit here in this little 10x30 foot backyard, the sky is filled with the flowing gaseous form of water, dark patches of moist earth speckle the yard, the plants soak up their scattered watering, and the leaves of bushes and trees imbue the space with a sense of dampness from their foliage. As my senses tune into the moisture that surrounds me, I fill Braedon’s artificial pond with water. I stare at the shimmering surface, contemplating Eiseley’s narrative, and the little bit of life’s wellspring caught in Brae’s pool. I see why Eiseley thought the most abundant compound on the earth’s surface is mystical.
Talking about the book value per share it is important to know that market value is a forward looking measure and reflects what investors believe shares are worth while the book value is an accounting measure. Also, if a market value is much higher then there is a bull market, though if book value and market value are close to each other, then financial markets are likely experiencing bear market.
Nature has always been a controversial subject ever since the 1800’s when the artistic movement of Transcendentalism flourished. Transcendentalism refers to the intellectual movement that was developed in the 19th century which declares that truth can not be sought through plain observation, but is found through the “heightened consciousness” that allows an individual to reach the truth (Robinson 125). The “heightened consciousness” portrays spiritual guiding, letting the body dictate its own path to life. Eventually, key figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau emphasized the movement, discussing the relation between man, nature ,and transcendentalism. Over the course of the 19th century, transcendentalism links the value
One example of naturalism can be seen through the oiler, cook, correspondent, and captain all a lack of understanding in “The Open Boat” To prove this Stephen Crane points out in the very beginning of the story that the four men did not even know the color of the sky. I think that the men were worried about this form of nature because their
Technical Definition in my own words: Someone who provides data (either knowingly or unknowingly) for a research study that are also analyzed.
The poem “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” enables the reader to take part in a form of spiritual splendor that accompanies nature, more specifically daffodils, previously felt by Wordsworth. The poem truly begins when Wordsworth comes across a field of daffodils after walking along the coast. The daffodils keep the speaker comp...
Effective technical writing is essential in the workplace especially in my nursing career. It is important throughout our interactions in any aspect of our daily life. Looking back at the readings, learning exercises, and assignments for the past five weeks, this class helped me build more confidence and competence in communicating in my work place. I became mindful of the format and content of my documentation and how I communicate with my patients. I find the concept of Audience Analysis memo is beneficial to my job. Everyday, I deal with culturally diverse patients and knowing how to analyze and approach my specific target audience affects the efficiency of conveying my message such as, educating family members and giving instructions before procedures and after discharge. Moreover, I realized that most of my documents that I present to my patients are informative and persuasive at the same time like when I am presenting them consents and waiver forms to perform a procedure.
The primary external conflict of naturalistic literature is man’s struggle against nature or their environment. Harsh weather conditions, droughts and famines are all examples of how th...
The average working class citizen will be required to apply their reading and writing skills in a work environment at one point in time in there career; with this information it’s recommended that all college graduates complete a reading and writing class in order for them to better understand this concept. So that when the time comes they can apply the skills they learned into a real life exercise.
