William Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet” was written by Shakespeare in 1595, and was the first tragedy Shakespeare wrote. The inspiration for this play was a poem called “The Tragicall historye of Romeus and Juliet”. “Romeo and Juliet” is not a typical tragedy because it ends, not in death but with reconciliation as the Capulets and Montagues become friends and love triumphs. “Romeo and Juliet” is about two families both as proud as each other, living in Verona. An old quarrel turns into violence in which everyone is involved. From the feud come two ill fated lovers. Their love leads to their untimely deaths. Parents lose their only children and make peace for the memories of the woeful tale of Juliet and her Romeo. This is explained in the prologue. The prologue comments on the events of the play; it gives facts on the feud and the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The ending is revealed so the audience may judge characters and events in the light of the finial tragedy. The prologue emphasizes that the lovers are ill-fated and their love is “death-marked” and they are born by “fatal loins” There are many factors involved in the death of the two lovers, but I think the main reason is fate.
