The Effect of Discipleship on the Life of a Christian Today

There are five ways in which discipleship might affect the lives of
Christians today: Vocation, Service, Faith, Prayer and Worship. I
intend on answering this question by examining these five examples.

Vocation is the main way. This means a sense of being called to
perform a task for God. Many Christians have a vocation to help those
who are ill in a practical way. Christian medical workers may feel
called to dedicate their lives to heal and ease the suffering of
others, in their own country or in other countries around the world.
In this way these Christians may feel that they are spreading the good
news of Jesus and of his concern for those in need. Vocation is the
most important way in which discipleship can affect Christian life.

Another way in which discipleship affects Christian life is Service.
An example of service is Mother Teresa and the missionaries of
Charity. Mother Teresa is a Christian whose work is known throughout
the world. She has found many centres throughout the world to help
lesson peoples suffering. Another example of service is volunteer work
to help the poor and unfortunate. Jesus taught us “if one of you wants
to be great, he must be the servant of the rest. For even the son of
man didn’t come to be served. This shows us that the life of a
Christian today must involve service.

Prayer is another way in which discipleship affects Christian life.
For Christians, prayer is communicating with God. In order to find
time to pray many Christians go on retreats and pilgrimages to pray
for the sick. Asking God for help is an important part of prayer. But
Christian prayer is more than asking for things. It should involve
praising, thanking and confessing to God. Many Christians neglect
their prayer life though. Jesus taught his disciples that they needed
to pray in order to have a strong connection with God and we see Jesus
prayed before performing many of his miracles for example in

Through the Gospel we learn a lot of how we should lead our life and try to be more like Jesus in doing so. We can start by looking at the greatest commandment Mark12. Christian Discipleship Essay - Research Paper: Discipleship Because I became a Christian at an early age, there are many terms and ideas used in the church that I never pondered upon; I simply accepted them. For example, the term "disciple" I identify as one of Jesus' twelve closest followers, one of the paper characters placed on the felt board during Sunday school. Through my research, I have discovered that while accepting Christ through faith alone grants us salvation, to become a disciple of Christ, or practice discipleship, requires work and commitment from the believer....   [tags: Religion Christian] 996 words

Gethsemane “Take this cup of suffering away from me”. This tells us we
must pray during our Christian life today.

Faith is another way in which discipleship can affect the life of a
Christian today. Faith is a personal response on behalf of the
believer: Christians trust God with their life. If prayer is to be
effective, then there must be faith. In the gospel, faith means
placing complete trust in Jesus. Through Jesus, individuals called
upon the power of God believing that he would help. In response to
that faith, miracles take place. Some people believe that miracles
bring about faith. In Marks Gospel we see some of the faith the people
Jesus healed had. For example the woman who touched Jesus’ cloak “If I
just touch his clothes I will be healed”. This shows us that Faith is
essential to Christian life today.

Worship is the final example of discipleship in our lives today. Many
Christians spend their whole lives worshipping God. Other Christians
neglect worship and only do it when they need something. Most
Christians set aside Sunday for worship. It is important that this is
a day of relaxation away from the pressures of life. It is important
that we use this time to show God our adoration and thanks for what we
have in life. This shows us we need Worship in order to have a strong
Christian life today.

I have learned that in order for us to have a Christian life we must
put in a lot of time and effort. There are a lot of sacrifices to be
made but ultimately there are many rewards of discipleship including
the promise of eternal life. Although we live in a different time we
should show a level of commitment equal to the first disciples. This
is a big commitment to make but with much perseverance we can do this.
This shows that discipleship must affect the life of a Christian
today.
