71 percent of the people that were at The Station Nightclub Fire, which occurred in West Warwick Rhode Island on February 20, 2003, that either died or was injured. This paper will look at the contributing factors in this shocking number as it pertains to fire prevention. When breaking down a case study, this case being The Station Nightclub Fire, there are three main factors you must look at. Those factors are fire behavior, human behavior, and building behavior.
Dropping everything he’s doing Joe quickly runs to the fire poll and proceeds to exits the building, sirens soaring over head, and fire truck engines starting up, he rushes to slip on his gear, he feels good about himself knowing he’s a hero, he holds his helmet under his right arm, and jumps on the bright shiny red fire truck, he taps the sparkling smooth metal twice, and they pull out of the fire station, as they arrive at the house, he spots the bright red and orange fire, instantly everything slows down, and his heart speeds up, other than the thrill and overall well-being of this career. Job duties, Salaries, Requirements, Hours, and other information about this career are also something to think about.
Fire safety education is a crucial aspect of fire prevention. The general public needs to know how big of a threat fire is to them and how they can do things in their everyday lives to improve their safety, as well as preventing the threat of fire to begin with. The commission also realized that it was critically important that people know how to properly act once a fire has started. It is important that people have the knowledge to act quickly, safely, and effectively. When people don’t understand fire they can react in many negative ways such as panicking, not evacuating effectively, or by trying to fight a fire that they are not going to be able to extinguish. All these human reactions can decrease safety and end with tragic results. In the commission’s report they approximate that nearly 70 percent of all building fires were due to people acting carelessly because they did not understand the fire dangers that were present. The commission cited studies like one conducted in southeast Missouri. In the southeast Missouri community, a huge emphasis was put into public fire safety education because the fire death rate of the community was much higher than the national average. After increasing fire safety education in the community it was no surprise that the rate of deaths and injuries decreased
The Cleveland Clinic Fire of 1929 was one of the most devastating fires in Cleveland’s history and also in the U.S. Many people lost their lives because of hazardous materials not being stored safely and properly. The fire changed the way we think about fire safety forever. Fire fighters are now required to wear breathing equipment when responding to every fire. It also changed the requirements of hazardous equipment storage in every building in Cleveland and the way insurance companies enforce the new laws. Though many lost their lives on this day, it taught us a lot about fire safety and will hopefully save lives in the future.
The difference between a fire that is warm and friendly and one that is ferociously hot and destructive is size. A small fire in a campsite can take the edge off the cool night air, and a raging forest fire can destroy a thousand acres in a few hours. Fire has been one of our most important tools on our journey from the beginning of time to the present day. It also poses a severe threat to mankind if it is not controlled. Children often experiment with fire. Any time a child starts a fire he endangers himself and the people around him. Juvenile arson happens on a routine basis, and has very outreaching consequences. Fires statistics reported by fire departments in 2003, show that children started approximately forty-two thousand fires, causing an estimated one-hundred sixty-five civilian deaths, nineteen hundred civilian injuries and two-hundred seventy-two million dollars in direct property damage (United States Fire Administration, 2004). The price that society pays for juvenile-set fires is extremely high. Tragically, the lives of the very children setting the fires account for most of the lives that are lost.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire not only affected the city of New York, but also the rest of the country. It forever changed the way our country would look at safety regulations in factories and buildings. The fire proved to America what can and will happen if we over-look safety regulations and over-crowd buildings. Unfortunately, 146 lives are taken before we fully understand this concept.
Fire played a very important role in the lives of the early Fond du Lac pioneers. It provided people with heat, light, and a means to cook. Almost every home in Fond du Lac had some sort of stove or fireplace. If a fire got out of control, that house and surrounding homes were in danger of burning down. As the town’s population grew larger and larger, the number of fire sources went up as well. The chances of a fire getting out of control were growing quickly. People soon began to fear the inevitable.
There are a large amount of firefighting jobs. A majority of firefighting jobs come from the municipal government, where the firefighter works for the city. This paper will be limited to just municipal firefighting. In the olden days, firefighting was exactly what it sounded like, fighting fires. Fire extinguishment was the main focus of those firefighters and was achieved through simple suppression with water. Today’s firefighters have a more complex list of chores in their job description. “By the late 200s, it was becoming clear that the role of fire departments had greatly expanded to include not only fire protection but also medical and mutual aid calls” (Fire Protection, 3101) This means that new recruits will go to an academy and learn how to do almost everything, including forcible entry, ventilation, dealing with smoky environments, and escaping dangerous situations (Byrne, 16). Although the name implies a single task, it is actually a jack of all trades career, requiring vast knowledge and skill. The modern inventions that prevent fires are diminishing bread and butter of the fire department. Now firefighters are taking more and more responsibilities and become well versed in any sort of accidents and natural disasters. This does not mean that fires are no longer a problem, but rather, are now a less vital part of the firefighting career. The job o...
Benjamin recommended that to contact with the local fire station and invite the firefighter as a role model comes to student classroom for a fire safety presentation on fire prevention and talk about what to do in case of a fire during some situation (Vicgovau, 2016). This is where children learning involves professional from public services including education. It aims to encourage children to develop motivation and high aspirations for their learning that ongoing relationship and interaction support children’s success in learning (Vicgovau,

Over the course of the past few years, mass killings have escalated in the United States, causing an immense uproar from the many American citizens demanding a solution. Due to the two conflicting sides regarding the solution, gun control; many are not able to come to an agreement. While some argue gun control is the only way to help stop the mass killings that are on the high rise, others argue that it is against the Constitution and against one’s rights to not be able to bear arms. Gun control, although portrayed as the only solution to the mindless killing, is not the answer to today’s violence; in fact many believe that stricter gun control enables more mass shootings to take place (Statistics show mass shootings more frequent with strict gun control). The problem is not gun ownership, it is the increasing tendency towards violence in the United States (Stone).
Every year communities struggle each year around the nation with issues of life safety. In 2012, the nation’s fire departments responded to 31,854,000 responses that resulted in the deaths 0f 2,855 civilians and injuring 16,500 causing an estimated $12,427 million dollars in damage. (United States Fire Administration, 2014) These incidents put at risk 345,950 career and 783,300 volunteer firefighters that resulted in the deaths of 81 individuals (U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2013) and nearly 70,000 reported injuries. ( Karter & Molis, 2013) These numbers represent incidents that are determined to be in the line of duty but do not take into consideration the long-term health risk issues that may develop. Evidence shows that he hazards associated with Fire and Emergency Services are consistent across the board whether paid or volunteer and jeopardize the lives and health of each individual, placing administrative and physical control measures reduces this risk to firefighter within an organization. While it is impossible to eliminate the hazards firefighters face, it is important to identify these hazards as the first step in reducing the potential for loss of life and wellbeing both physically and mentally.
...r it is arson, an uncontrolled camp fire, or a cigarette butt it doesn’t take much for humans to spark a disaster. Yet there is as well a few set by good old Mother Nature. On top of the effects on the earth as well as humans, there is only one thing we all can do and that is listen to our old pal Smokey the Bear when he says, “only you can prevent wildfire.”
Adults more than likely most frequently set fires for monetary gain – such as insurance fraud but other reasons also abound (Bartol & Bartol). Revenge, vandalism, crime concealment or diversion, intimidation, terrorism, and sabotage are all reasons why fires are set. Many of th...
Creating the awareness among the students helps them on the various ways to avoid fires. If possible students are advised to ensure that all the fire alarms and extinguishers are in working conditions at all times. They should also be careful and alert when using any appliance that is likely to cause a fire and avoid using anything that is prohibited in the rooms.
