The Effect of Exercise on Heart Rate

Aim: In this investigation I am trying to find out if exercise have
any effects on the heart rate.

Prediction: For my prediction, I predict that as the amount of
exercises increases, the heart rate will increase too.

Background: More energy (Oxygen and glucose) is needed to pass to all
different kind of muscles as you do a certain amount of different
exercises, so more blood is needed to run in the circulatory system,
therefore the heart rate will go up.

Variables: The results can be affected by the following things, the
change of amount of exercises, the change of time for exercising and
resting, the change of temperature and the change of person and their
health.

Input variables: The input variable will be the time of exercises.

Output variables: The output variable will be the results of heart
rate.

Fair test: To make this experiment a fair test, I will set out a table
for different times I'm testing on, only choose one exercise and use
the same person for the experiment all the way through.

Apparatus: In this experiment the apparatus I will be needed is a
stopwatch, a pulse watch and some steps (e.g. Stairs).

Method: 1) At the beginning of the experiment, we will take down the
pulse from the person who is experimenting and note it down.

2) Firstly we do the exercise we have chosen for 2 minutes, than we
take down the pulse rate and note it down while they are resting after
exercising. We do that 3 times.

3) We do the same for the other sets of minutes, 4 and 6 minutes, and
at the end of each set were all measured, we will calculate the
average and note it down into the table of results.

Safety: To make this investigation safe, we can not force the person
who is doing the experiment to do over-exercising, or to force some
one who has breathing problems to do long exercises.

Rest time pulse was taken before doing the set of exercise.

Conclusion: This graph shows the averages from the table of results.

From this graph I can see the results does not match my prediction, as
the averages should have went up as the time of exercises increases.
In this graph between the first and second set of results (2 and 4
minutes) went up, but then the results suddenly dropped down even
lower than the first set of results.

I think during the experiment, the person who was experimenting rested
longer than they should between the second and third sets of times, so
therefore the result have dropped down as shown on the graph.

I think this experiment was not done properly and fairly towards the
end, so therefore the results doesn't match the line of best fit and
the results would not be appropriate as the results does not match my
background information and does not match any scientific explanations.

The scientific explanation for this experiment should be as the time
or amount of exercises goes up, the heart rate should go along with it
and goes up also.

Evaluation

For this experiment, I think the results I have recorded were not all
reliable, because the results do not match my prediction or my
scientific background.

I think the result that I have recorded was anomalous, this is because
it is not similar to other results. For example, the table below comes
from one of the sites I have found from my researches, this table
shows the heart rate which people from different age groups have rise
after doing exercises, the numbers in the middle shows how many people
have rise up to that number of heart rate.

In this experiment, I think improvements that are going to be needed
is in the area of fair test, fair test is the most important in
experiments, because it gives out either accurate or inaccurate
results depends on if you are doing it correctly, I think the problem
for my results is led by unfair test, timing for resting might be the
problem, because if the person who is experimenting is resting more
than they should, then their heart rate will be lower then it should
while taking down their heart rate. Also we can be more organised for
our improvements we will need to make sure the person who is
experimenting are working at the time that is set, and we can use a
pulse watch to measure their heart rate as my group now have not got a
pulse watch because there was not enough for the whole class to use,
so we have to measure it by hand, in order to get more reliable and
accurate results, I will need to use a pulse watch.

For further work, I will also calculate other sets of times, for
example I can calculate the person's pulse rate while they are
continuously exercising.

Therefore, more results can be use to be compared with and also, they
can prove the result I have got at present is wrong.

Overall, I think this experiment should be redone, so then I can get
more accurate and reliable results and more and better technology
should be used to carry out an accurate result with an accurate
timing.
