Most students go through high school trying to just get to graduation day. They just want to pass all their classes, nothing higher. Only a small percentage of students in high school actually have the determination to excel and be above average on their own. Most people need someone to inspire them to excel. The essay "Tracking" by Mike Rose discusses how he needed someone to point out to him that he shouldn't be in Vocational classes. He put into a whole new different situation, and the classes could actually be a challenge for him. Being a mediocre student are apart of most students lives because they don't push themselves to be better. High school was not a completely dreadful experience, but I did not get a really an exceptional education. As I entered high school, I thought it would be a whole new exciting chapter in my life. I started out as an involved student, and went through all of the Advance Placement and Honor classes, and managed to be at the top 12% of my class. In high school, I basically placed myself to enjoy it; I joined all of the extra curricular activities I was interested in. I was in band, tennis, swimming, dance team, and Key Club. Sometimes I was at school for about fourteen hours a day, four times a week. Then my grades started to slip and I just began to pile myself up with school activities so I would have excuses not to do homework. I was just a mediocre student, and I did whatever I could just to get by. It was not that I did not want to do my homework, and I just found better use of my time. Whereas Rose was put in to the vocational track, because he didn't really understand. "The vocational track, however, is most often place for those who are just not making it, a dumping ground for the disaffected." He had no idea what classes he was taking; he just listened and followed directions. I was completely opposite; I went against my parents' wishes and joined band, and swimming. They wanted me to concentrate on school instead of extra curricular activities. I was the now the mediocre student who didn't have the drive to do any better then I was doing.
High school was, well, I guess you could say normal, but what is normal? I went to class, complained about the food, teachers, projects, you know, the “normal stuff”. In high school, looking back, I guess you could say that I was the one who had all the answers and always knew what was going on. As my one classmate put it one day “Holly’s like the New York Times; she always knows what’s going on.” I was the one that knew what the homework was, what the test would be on, if you needed notes you could copy mine because I had them all, and this was a big one; need help with your homework? Ask Holly. I’m not trying to say that I was an over-achiever, I too slacked off just as much as the next person, I guess my point is, is that I wouldn’t have been that girl if it hadn’t been for my friends.
High school students don’t know how they can succeed in school and improve their academic performance. A student in high school with unexceptionally easy courses could glide through high school with very limited effort involved and receiving mediocre results. The student receives low grades since they are not required or expected to exceed above any standards set by the administration. When that student graduates high school and begins their college career or applies for jobs, they are vacuous and struggle since they only took the easy route throughout their early life and was never prepared. Unfortunately, most students end up in that predicament of not being prepared for their future struggles and fail to succeed since there was never any
I’m not going to lie, high school is tough but, in the end you realize that, it leaves you with a great experience and great memories. High School has its perks and disadvantages. In High School you tend to limit yourself. There are strict rules you have to follow and a principle you have to listen to. In High School you have a total of eight classes. It’s a schedule that you follow every day from 8:00am-3:30pm. In High School everybody is separated into their own groups. You try so hard to find the one that fits you the best or, you just create one yourself. It’s a place surrounded by people that care more about what people
I have to admit that I will not look fondly on my high school career. I spent most of my study time going out with my friends. I felt that I was paying my dues with the eight hours of boredom that began most of my days. Until now there were only a few classes that I enjoyed. In retrospect, I believe that it was my inability to choose the classes I took which resulted in my lack of enthusiasm on the ride to school each morning.
High school is a time in life when teenagers learn a lot about themselves. Personally I learned that I have to work hard to get what I want and that I could do anything that I set my mind to. For me coming to Rockhurst High School was initially a struggle. Although I was had straight A's before high school, I soon realized that high school could not be compared to middle school. The school district I came from was nonaccredited at the time and did not prepare me to be well equipped in high school. I knew that coming from one of the worst public school districts in Kansas City to going to one of the top private high school schools in Missouri, would not be easy and I was up for the challenge. Starting out freshman year I noticed that my grades were not what I had hoped for them to be and became very worried. Instead of taking the easy way out and transferring to an easier school I decided to challenge myself and stay at Rockhurst. At the end of my freshman year I
To start it all off, high school is not awful. More specifically, grade twelve isn’t a complete disaster. It is just a given that we will wake up every morning and go to school for six hours. Of course, there really is no challenge in that; it’s just one fourth of our day. It’s been the routine for the past 12 years. We just have to be there, do some work, and then go home. Achieving grades that our parents can comprise with is genuinely that easy. It’s simple. Of course, there are some of us that want to venture a bit further than that. They’re the ones that want to be a part of the extra-curriculars, and put some meaning to their four years. Whether that’s joining a club or a sports team, it’s simply something to say they participated in
I envision high school as an essential stepping stone for everyone. The era where every individual lacks the complete confidence in defining who they are or what they want to be. The four years of high school was the moment and opportunity to seek the interests that stood out to me the most. The experiences you make and the people you associate with are a crucial part of finding yourself.
My palms were sweating, my heart was racing, I had no idea what to expect or who I was going to meet. I was never the type of girl to embrace new situations, I hated change and I wasn’t very good with meeting new people. I figured once I got to high school it would be my chance to start all over, turn the page in my book of life, and flip over a new leaf. I wanted to finally be the girl that fit in with everyone. I had imagined myself going to parties with big groups of my new friends, having sleepovers and doing all of the things cool high school kids normally do. I was certain that my high school career would be just like one of those really corny teen movies and I would live happily ever after with the homecoming crown and the boy of my dreams. I don’t think I could have been any further from the actual truth. Things don’t always turn out how they are planned and my high school dreams definitely did not live up to my high expectations.
High school is a crucial part in many people’s life. It is a time for people to grow, develop, and transition into adulthood. I am a firm believer in the idea that situations are what a person makes of them and I believe that I have created a great experience in my three years of high school. My experiences throughout sports have shaped me to become the person I am today. Throughout high school I have learned a lot about, not only myself, but also about my friends and family. I have experienced many things that I only thought happened in high school drama movies. The best years of our lives are quickly coming to an end. I’m not good with metaphors and all that figurative language stuff but I am semi-good at one thing, that is running long distance. High school is like competing in a cross-country race, shy and timid at first, but by the end people will see my true colors as I am crossing the finish line.
My High School life has helped shape the way for my college experiences that I will face. My senior year in high school is not the same as many other high school students. I am taking many advanced classes to help me prepare for college. These classes help me better understand exactly how much harder I must work to succeed.
There has been many sacrifices that have been done throughout my high school years. High school brought so much stress into my life due to all the work that must be completed. Good grades aren’t just given to the student, but must be earned. If a person doesn’t struggle to be successful, that person didn’t give it their all. For example, in the article Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, it states “Weathers countered that his vision was likely to improve as soon as the sun crept higher in the sky.” Weathers struggled summiting, but he never gave up on what he wanted to accomplish. This is the same as the sacrifices faced in school. I have had struggles where i believe that I can’t finish an assignment, but then I realize what i want to be in life
I heard stories of people leaving the military school and easily rising to the top of their class because high school was nothing compared to that nightmare. In an effort to receive a better education, I made a hasty depart from New Mexico. The goal of completeing a semester had been acheived. After re-enrolling in a normal high school, I found that not only was putting effort into schoolwork easier, but that I actually enjoyed learning.
I try to look at all sides of a situation. I like to think in gray instead of black and white. Visualization is the best style for me to learn in, if I can see how things work I will understand it better. I went to a public 1-A school. There were 600 students K-12. My graduating class contained 45 students. My mother was an elementary teacher at the school so she was involved with all of my functions. I was the president of Key Club for my last 2 years. I participated in SGA and Diamond Dolls but Key Club is where I devoted most of my time to. High school was relatively easy for me and I did well. I attended class regularly and graduated Magnum Cum Laude. During my Junior and Senior year I participated in dual enrollment with the local community college. I did not have an official job in high school but I did babysit every
High school has been a very interesting experience for me. It has definitely had its highs and lows and many confusing experiences in between. Overall, I feel like I have been equipped for not only college, but also life as a whole. High school has taught me many things, both academically and emotionally. It has revealed and exposed my true colors, both good and bad, and as a result, has built many aspects of my character. My experiences at Alameda High school and Alameda Community Learning Center have shaped me into the person that I am today.
Time flies so fast. Looking back, my high school is just like a movie, a lot of things happened. High School is four years of growing up and probably a time in your life where you go through the most changes. In high school you are able to discover yourself and find out who you are as a person. Each year is special and unique in their own way. My journey through high school was a tough one, especially because I decided to not only focus on academic work but also to invest quality time in extra curriculum activities. I wanted more than just academic excellence; I wanted to be a leader, I wanted to add value to every aspect of my life, I wanted a rounded education and not just mere schooling. My success story is what I will like to share with you; how I really made it and how this defines my personality. My journey in High School was scary, exciting, and successful.
