Video games are an evolution in the world, constantly changing and expressing ideas into the world. Video games are an expression, giving people a chance to tell a story they create. A story that many people around the world will play, and possibly enjoy. But in recent years, games have gotten more and more violent. Games have sparked controversy on whether they can be good for people, or cause behavioral problems. It’s a topic that has caused numerous debates. Well the truth is, video games do not cause behavioral problems, but in fact they can be beneficial to people.
Video games have the power to do more and more. With technology, games are able to have a more realistic look. With people actually looking like people, and environments looking more realistic, developers are able to create games that look more like real life. With the release of Doom, it sparked some controversial debate. The goal player is to shoot other living targets to accumulate more points. Violent games like Doom create controversy and are to blame for tragic events that happen (Vitelli 1). As years go by, video games are still changing and new genres are appearing, for people to try and hopefully like. In 2004, the company Blizzard Entertainment, revolutionized the world of Mass Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG’S) with the release of World of Warcraft (WoW). With over 9 million players as of June 2007 (Chittom 2).
With Video Games, becoming bigger and bigger and having more more violence, can led to blame for tragic events, that involve people making bad behavior choices. In June 2005, a couple in South Korea went to their local internet café to play WoW. They did not expect to be their for to long, so they left their child home alone, wit...

...). A study done at the University of Rochester shows that people who play action games, that require them to think on there feet have showed to make decisions 25% faster then normal people and make choices and act on them 6 times a second (“Raise” 4). When playing certain games, they don’t have dialogue, but only text, so the player has to read the dialogue to understand what’s going on in the story, which helps people improve there reading skills (“Raise” 2) Games can also improve peoples teamwork skills as they ca formulate goals to complete the task that they are given, there sense of color contrast, and can be an emotional outlet for kids who need to release some aggression (“Raise” 4). Gaming is not always bad what people make it out to be. It helps the brain and it can improve the person’s social life and can be a healthy out lit for aggression.
At this day in age we bask in the luxury of having easy access to advanced technology at our disposal. From the World Wide Web, to cell phones, music, movies and video games the human race has thought of any and everything to keep us entertained. Over the years studies have shown reasonable concerns regarding the long-term effects of video games. These games can desensitize gamers to real life violence, which is usually seen in the younger crowd. The studies especially hit on the games containing player-on-player violence. Though these games are extremely entertaining and can get kids to settle down for a while, if not properly supervised, they can produce adverse effects. Other studies have shown that video games can be used as way to yield positive outcomes such as, good problem solving skills, cooperation in a group and the ability to flow. Although there has been psychological research on children learning through the actions of others some believe that children are automatically able to distinguish between what is just a game and what is reality. The longer they are allowed on their game system the more they become convinced that their games are real. Some researchers believe violent video games can channel the aggression of the child but the parents are to blame for what happens to the child after playing an excessive amount over a period of time. Children can become preoccupied with these violent video games which have been proven to be the cause of poor social skills, uncontrollable aggression and a false reality.
Video game effects are relatively new in modern society. Even though these games are often entertaining, the content of the game has been increasingly more and more violent as technology becomes more prevalent. The popularity of violent video games has caused an increase in controversy. Parents and experts feel that some games are just too violent and they demand the government to regulate the sales of these games. However, violent video games do not cause an increase in aggression, in adolescents. The forceful plan by the government is caused by an exaggeration of the effects of violent video games and this plan are indeed pointless.
For many years, many people have linked the increased violent and aggressive behavior in teenagers and children to violent video games for two main reasons. Video games are very addictive and gamers can become very violent and aggressive when someone tells them to stop playing and can spark the violence in people who already have aggressive behavior. Such examples of violence addictions were in the cases of Daniel Petric and a thirteen-year old that were very addictive to video games and had already aggressive behavior. Seventeen year old Daniel murdered his mother, Susan Petric, “after she being denied him access to Halo 3” (Massoud). If that didn’t sound horrifying, a “13-year-old boy murdered an 81-year-old for money to fund his online gaming addiction” (Massoud). We can’t deny the fact that these two cases of game addiction prove the argument, but everyone should ask themselves these questions. If parents did know about the viole...
One of the most important areas that video games benefit is cognition, which is how people process and receive knowledge. Video games improve problem-solving abilities (Granic, Label and Engels 4). Additionally, they augment spatial working memory and visual search abilities (Oei and Patterson 13). Experience video gamers have developed adept behaviors such as problem perception and self-observance (Hayes and Silberman 19). Furthermore, video games have different beneficial effects on cognition depending on what type of games they are (Oei and Patterson 15). Puzzle games, such as Tetris, help improve people’s mental rotation skills (Oei and Patterson 1). Action video games...
The allegation that videogames cause violent behavior in children has been present as long as videogames themselves. Some researchers said that the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, was one intense gamer. “Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Shooter was seen by his roomates as odd because he never joined them in video games.”(Beresin) This debate will continue to go on in this country as long as there are horrific crimes that occur. There is much written in the research regarding this issue, and many differing views. The research that is presented in the next few paragraphs supports the theory that it is not the graphic video games that produce aggressive behavior, but other factors in a child’s life that create violent actions.
In recent years, technology has developed very rapidly. This has led to many arguably both positive and negative changes in our everyday lives. One such change was the increased accessibility of personal computers and gaming consoles as well as the introduction of numerous video games. Due to their entertainment value, these games gained popularity among children and teenagers. Although many concerns have been voiced related to playing video games, especially those that are violent, [e.g., increases in aggressive behavior in children (Anderson & Bushman, 2001)], this paper will argue that certain video games also have beneficial effects. They should thus be played by children, teenagers and adults alike albeit with caution.
By far the largest concern of technology today is video games. There have been so many experiments and studies to try and figure out if video games have a negative or positive effect on our children. A growing body of research is linking violent video game play to aggressive cognitive, attitudes and behaviors (D.A. Gentile, 2004). Video games can obviously be dangerous for our children causing aggression, bad performances in school and obesity. Although we cant blame all of these problems on the use of video game...
There is no doubt that video games have become a major entertainment as important as cinema, literary and theatre for modern people. Nowadays, people tend towards spending more time on playing games than ever before. According to Nielsen’s report, gamers age 13 and older spent 6.3 hours a week on any gaming platform in 2013 around the United States, and the time people spent in 2012 was just 5.6 hours per week (The Nielsen Company, 2014). 12 percent, rising is a clear message to remind people that video games should be taken seriously. Because, as an emerging mode of entertainment, it is being a part of our culture and has a tremendous influence in our daily life. An increasing number of people are beginning to realize that games should and
One article points out that video games have a big impact on children’s lives and that many of the games played are violent. Researchers have found that “nearly all children spend time playing video games” and studies have found that “8th graders spent an average of 17 hours per week playing video games” (Tamborini 336). Moreover, 68% of the most popular video games contain violence (Tamborini 336). So it is clear that many children have access to violent video games and they have a big impact on their lives simply because of the amount of time spent playing them.
Some people believe that violent video games can cause behavioral problems. This is not true; it is only their opinion. They may say people that play violent video games start having behavioral problems, and what was that cause? It is only people and it has no effect on them, only their own actions and their mental health issues. The violent video games for computers and consoles’ sales rate went up, but violent crime offenses went down.
Problems such as school shootings, violence, and changes in behavior have been occurring sometime during or after 1994 when the first violent video game was released. This game was called Mortal Kombat where two players fight to the death and to finish off the defeated player, his opponent either decapitated him or had some other gory ending. Robert Keeshan, television producer and host of NYC’s “Time for Fun,” states that video games are not harmless toys and can cause great emotional and other damage to a child. This is a reason why par...
Gaming provides more advantages than it does disadvantages. Playing video games is good for you. There are many game genres out there in the world, you just have to choose the right ones to benefit you. For example, if you pick a strategy game, it would help you in critical thinking and benefit you by helping to make good decisions. A great strategy game called Starcraft was inspected in an experiment. It was found that Starcraft helped increased brain flexibility. Brain flexibility is the ability to switch between tasks and look at things from a different point of view. Higher brain flexibility allows you to comprehend multiple concepts at the same time. Brain flexibility allows you to switch between thoughts based on certain conditions and helps you adjust to your situation. For example if I were thinking about playing a video game and end up seeing the word “homework” I would instantly think about whether I have homework or not, and if I do, I would stop thinking about playing gam...
Nowadays, video games are frequently accused of having detrimental effects on children and adolescents. The main arguments against video games are that they lead to addiction, that they provoke violence, and that they impair social development. Whether or not such claims are true has not been determined with certainty as scientific studies have produced contradictory results. Nevertheless, video games also have beneficial effects, which tend to be underrated, as they do not receive the same level of media coverage that adverse ones do, and are thus unknown to the general public. Some of the positive effects of playing video games on mental development include: stimulating analytical thinking, improving concentration, and encouraging planning and anticipation (“Video game controversies”).
Video games have been argued about for decades. Some people have argued that video games are linked to violence. However, new research shows that video games can be used for therapeutic purposes, exercise, stress relievers, positive interactive learning, hand eye coordination, and different types of patient treatment for people all around the world.
In a society driven by technology, video games are becoming more popular each and everyday. People of all ages enjoy video games in their free time; these games allow the player to become an athlete, a soldier, or a professional fighter at the tip of their fingers. The biggest problem with these video games is that they are becoming too violent. In today’s society, children often brag about the new video game they bought, and the number of people they have managed to kill while playing these games. Video games have become realistic, causing them to intrigue a larger amount of children. Many of these violent video games encourage killing and fighting of enemies, or strangers in the game. Each year a new game system, and hundreds of video games are released, and millions of kids go out and buy them and spend hours playing. Video games have a large effect on school performance and time spent with family. Children would prefer to play their games than sit down and talk with their parents (Saleem, 2012).
