In Dead Until Dark, Vampires seem to be attracted to the Bon Temps area because it is a place where they are acknowledged and protected. In Twilight, vampires are more of a fable; however, they still blend with human beings and only a select few know that they exist. Dead until Dark and Twilight are two suspenseful, romantic novels that is about a young girl who falls in love with a dangerous vampire. Bella and Edward’s relationship shows similar characteristics to that of Sookie and Bills. In Twilight, Bella and Edward gives the impression that they have a healthier relationship than Sookie and Bill. Both of their relationships share comparisons and contrasts that make the books analogous.
First, when comparing the relationships, it is significant to know where the girls came from and how they met their vampire lover. In Twilight, Bella moved from Phoenix Arizona to the small, quiet town of Folks Washington to live with her father, Charlie. On Bella’s first day at her new school, she met Edward in the science class they happen to have together. It was ideal how there had coincidentally been an empty seat next to Edward, which left Bella to be paired up with him for the lab assignment. Since the moment Bella noticed Edward, she thought he was the most beautiful guy she had ever seen. During the lessons of the lab assignment, Edward seemed to become more and more repulsed by Bella, which made him want to switch out of the class and get far away from her. Edward had given Bella the ‘cold shoulder’ for a while and had disappeared for a few days -which infuriated her. Edward appeared as kind, courteous, thoughtful and protective and rarely let Bella out of his sight. Bill was the kind of vampire that drinks human blood, comes out at night, and has special healing powers. Bill has had been in trouble several times before, as well as, had trouble follow him wherever he went All though both Bill and Edward have potential to be extremely dangerous vampires, they are still drawn towards the human girls. Bella and Sookie had becomes mesmerized and obsessed towards their powers and looks, that they both gave up their virginity. All in all, both relationships share a lot of similar characteristics, but in general Bella and Edwards would be the healthier one.
J. Gordon Melton, in the excerpt “Sexuality and the Vampire” published in his The Vampire Book: The Encyclopedia of the Undead (1998), explains that vampires have a sexual appearance that started from their origin in Dracula. Melton supports his statement by analyzing the monsters' transition to sexual beings through the stories of Dracula’s desires, multiple countries’ erotic tales revolving around vampire-like beings, the manifestation of sensual themes in literary, stage, and screen works, and their current evolution of the once terrified immortals to loved heroes. The purpose of this essay was to outline the seductiveness of the written immortal creatures in order to explain the fanged-mammals’ appeal beyond their terrifying monster abilities.
All fiction requires a reader to buy in to the world and characters that have been created, but sometimes stories can either be too unbelievable for the reader to relate to or they lean too much towards reality to be classified as fantasy. Karen Russell constructed a novel of exemplary short stories under the title Vampires In The Lemon Grove. Her stories are said to “vibrate with originality and life” with “imaginative reach and moral weight of works of much greater length.” The praise received for this collection of short stories is much deserved, and being her second novel after her award winning Swamplandia!, the author from Miami, Florida, has a bright future in short stories.
As can be seen, the Bella’s have many roles. For example, Aubrey has task/individual, Chloe has maintenance, Beca has individual/task and maintenance, Fat Amy has task/maintenance and individual, Stacie has Individual/Task, Cynthia Rose has Task, and Lilly has Task. Also, Aubrey shows legitimate power because her seniority influences every Bella. Beca earns referent power. Amid, a key nonverbal communication is eye contact.
Carmilla is an example of a woman who loves her food far too much. Carmilla is consumed entirely by her food, even sleeping in a coffin of blood: “The limbs were perfectly flexible, the flesh elastic; and the leaden coffin floated with blood, in which to a depth of seven inches, the body lay immersed” (Le Fanu 102). There exists a unique relationship between the vampire and their victims. Food becomes defined in terms of victimhood, distinctly separated from humanity’s general consumption of meat. The need for human victims makes hunting synonymous with courtship, as intense emotional connections are established between the vampiress and her food. As seen in the intense relationship developed between Laura and Carmilla, the vampire is “prone to be fascinated with an engrossing vehemence, resembling the passion of love, by particular persons” (105). For Carmilla, cruelty and love are inseparable (33). The taking of the victims’ blood for sustenance is a highly sexualized exchange of fluids from one body to another. The act of consumption is transformed into an illicit carnal exchange between the hunter and the hunted.
In particular, this theme is revealed in many occasions in the book. On page 56, Edward comes out of nowhere and saves Bella from a car accident that potentially could have taken her life. “Two long, white hands shot out protectively in front of me, and the van shuddered to a stop…” In similarity, towards the end of the movie, Edward saves Bella (who is alone) from being attacked by James. This makes us ask, “How are both of these scenes related?” However, both of these scenes are prominent in the movie and the book because they are so vital to the story. This shows how despite being far away, his protectiveness over Bella made him save her. This inflicts very positive characteristics on Edward, such as: bravery, selflessness, and compassion. The version that I focused on for the sake of this essay was the book. I did watch eleven of the thirty-three Dracula movies that I own, so some references will be made to the movies. The book is told from the perspective of Jonathan Harker’s journal, with some letters to and from his girlfriend Mina. The purpose of his visit with Count Dracula is that Harker is selling a building to Dracula. Carfax Abby was in England where Dracula wanted to move. Harker went to Transylvania to assist Count Dracula in his move to England.
Writer Natalie Wilson approaches the topic of race as what appears to be “unexamined” to many in the movie Twilight. In her article “Civilized Vampires Versus Savage Werewolves: Race and Ethnicity in the Twilight Series”, she points out many interesting details that support her opinion that Twilight depicts some sort of racial differences and biases amongst the characters. The movie is based on the storyline of diverse relationships between Bella Swan and a group of werewolves and vampires, including Jacob Black and Edward Cullen. The difference between the depiction of Edward and Jacob are very contrasting as Jacob is associated with savagery while Edward on the other hand is described as wealthy, talented, and smart. In Twilight, Edward Cullen presents the question; “ But what if I’m not the hero? What if I’m the bad guy?” The role of vampires is very controversial. Back in the day they were evil, soulless monsters and people genuinely feared them. However, in the present day it seems that we have grown to love them and even hope to one day be them. There are a plethora of vampire stories and many of them have become immense hits. With so many vampire stories, it is not uncommon that readers are able to identify a vast amount of similarities. Although similar in aspects, there are still many differences between the classic and modern day vampires. Two highly popular stories, in which we can easily identify similarities and differences, are Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight.
When the word vampire is said it evokes Hollywood images of handsome men and beautiful women, seductive creatures with fangs that lure in their prey with their hypnotic stare along with their good looks, wit and charm. Once the prey is seduced the vampire goes straight for the throat, biting down and draining their blood and ultimately their life. More recently the images may be of the sexy Vampire who is trying to pass as human in some high school setting that is amazingly fast, and strong, yet trying to be sensitive. Some sparkle in the sun and others must avoid it altogether, while still others wear some enchanted ring or jewelry in order to walk in sunlight. Oh yes, and let’s not forget their ability to go on living forever because one of the most incredible qualities is a vampire’s immortality, unless they have a wood or silver stake driven through their heart, or end up decapitated and burned, which would swiftly end there immortal rain. Whichever version of vampire you envision will depend on the most recent book, movie, or television series you are intrigued by. These images are the glorified Hollywood images that are spoon fed to us daily, but these are not the true definitions or characteristics of a real vampire. As much as most people believe that the image of the vampire was spawned from the story of Dracula written by Bram Stoker that is certainly not the case, the story of the vampire started thousands of years ago and span the globe, and continue to engross society today. Every culture has their own story and origination point and these stories have spawned a growing fascination with vampires. It is important to look back and see where it all began in order to uncover the truth of real vampires today.
In the article, “Civilized Vampires Versus Savage Werewolves: Race and Ethnicity in the Twilight Series,” Natalie Wilson compares the physical appearance and qualities of the two main character groups in the Twilight series, and how they represent a much deeper issue of class and racial inequality. First, Wilson compares the physical traits of Edward Cullen and the vampires, who are extraordinarily beautiful and have pale white skin, to the traits of Jacob Black and the werewolves who have copper skin, dark features, and look animalistic. Wilson also compares their personalities, the vampires being intelligent and well behaved, and the werewolves who are irrational and hostile. The two are further compared by their wealth. Edward has a seemingly endless supply of funds, lives in a mansion, drives a nice car, and wears sophisticated clothing, where Jacob lives in a small house, drives an old car, and wears tattered clothes. Wilson uses this collected information to bring to light the undercurrent of white privilege that is displayed throughout the Twilight series. It is also important to note, that in the story, Bella Swan a white teenage girl, is caught in a love triangle between Jacob and Edward.
First a major difference is sunlight does not affect the vampires in Twilight. The only thing the sun does to them is making them glow like glitter is on them. In Dracula the vampires are very weak when they get into the sun. Next big difference that you usually do not see in vampires is in Twilight they show up in pictures and mirrors. In Dracula it is shown when Jonathan was shaving that Dracula could not be seen in the mirror (29-30). The final difference between Dracula and Twilight is Holy items do not harm the vampires in Twilight. In Dracula however the items either burn the vampires, they just do not go near them. They usually just try to find an alternate solution around the object. This is shown when Draula used the wolf from the zoo to break the window open to get inside to suck on Lucy’s blood
Humanity has always been fascinated with the allure of immortality and although in the beginning vampires were not a symbol of this, as time passed and society changed so did the ideas and perceptions surrounding them. The most important thing to ask yourself at this point is 'What is immortality?' Unfortunately this isn't as easily answered as asked. The Merriam Webster Dictionary says immortality is 'the quality or state of being immortal; esp : unending existence' while The World Book Encyclopedia states it as 'the continued and eternal life of a human being after the death of the body.' A more humorous definition can be found in The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce:

Just like in any relationship, the concept of trust is an effectual factor in starting and developing a healthy and romantic relationship. In the movie, when Edward and Bella had a biological class together this aspect drew the two together, and the trust factor emerged at the first sight. The scent of Bella had an intense influence on Edward, for he is a vampire in nature. Moreover, it seemed as if Bella was the one Edward was waiting for a long time. Edward left school for a few days because the scent of Bella was too strong for him, and upon his return to school, he avoided stating the truth of why he was away from school. Edward stated, “He had to get out of the town for personal reasons and just in few days” (Blasingame et al. 57).
