As readers, we are engaged in the story because we are part of the story. The narrator, who is a personified death, is referring to the readers when he says “you”. Here, it is foreshadowed that many people, including the reader, will die in the near future. This is verbally ironic because death refers to this as a “small fact”, even though the subject of death is usually considered a significant and sensitive topic. This statement symbolizes the insignificance that narrator feels towards human life. In The Book Thief, death lets us know about crucial events that will happen later in the book to keep the readers interested. Literary devices such as foreshadowing, irony, and symbolism keep the reader engaged in the story and portray certain thematic ideas. She knew that for the next few days, Mama would be walking around with the imprint of an accordion on her body” (429). Rosa, Liesel’s “Mama”, keeps the accordion close to her heart because it reminds her of her husband, Hans, whom she misses so much. Throughout The Book Thief, the narrator of the story, Death, often foreshadows as a technique for symbolizing the theme. He says “To live. Living was living. The price was guilt and shame” (Zusak 208). It is important to realize, this foreshadows the struggle for the Jews and Hans’ struggle with conformity. However, it still relates directly back to the theme. Living was considered better than death, but the price in living was sacrificing what one truly believed, causing guilt and shame to follow. Foreshadowing can also be found in The Giver. Within the story, there is a young child, Gabriel, that Jonas’ family takes care of. In Markus Zusak’s “The Book Thief”, the author successfully portrays various aspects of human nature through Hans’ conflicts that originate from the tough reality that he lives in. Elements of human nature can be seen as a result of Hans’ constant struggles with guilt, kindness, and love.

The general setting and time of The Book Thief is roughly from 1939 to 1943. The rough summary of the bulk of the book is about a young girl named Liesel, who she and her mother are on a train, when suddenly her brother Werner dies. They get off immediately at the next stop to bury him. One of the gravediggers had a book in his hand, but he drops it, and Liesel picks it up. Liesel and her mother keep going to Munich, then to a place called Molching. When her parents are sick, Liesel needs to be put with foster parents. She is put with a couple named Hans and Roma. Liesel has nightmares about her brother who died on the train, when she first arrives at the Hubermann’s house and she would wake up screaming. Liesel goes to a school, where she is made study with the younger children because she is behind in her education. Liesel turns ten in February, and is given a doll by the her foster parents. She also gets a uniform, and is enrolled in the Hitler. Her foster mother starts taking Liesel with her when she gets washing from the neighbors in Molching, and when Liesel is old enough she is going to start doing the same thing also.
Imagine you are sprinting through the woods getting shot at by red coats, you are only seventeen and you have been kidnapped. You are running with a so called murderer. Not a very good picture huh? The movie kidnapped is way better than the book there for there is more action in the movie and it made more sense. The movie made more sense because they showed what coat everyone was wearing and so that wasn't confusing who was who because I knew that they switched coats. There is also more action because they include more battle parts to it. in the movie Davies dad doesn't get killed by Ebeneezer he got crushed by a falling tree in a middle of a storm, the movie actually shows detail about the death but the book only tells what happened with no action detail.
The protagonist of The Book Thief is Liesel Meminger, a girl growing up in holocaust Germany. As the book begins Liesel is 9 years old, a girl given up by her mother to live with foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann in the German town of Molching. On the way to Molching Liesel’s brother Werner who was supposed to join her at the Hubermanns’ dies and Liesel is traumatized making the separation from her mother, her only remaining family much more painful. Thankfully the blow is softened by the love extended to her from her foster-father. Hans compared to Rosa with her gruff, loud love is just the solace Liesel needs. He is gentle and kind, patient enough to teach Liesel how to read, starting with a book she picked up at the graveyard where her brother was buried. With his aid Liesel slowly becomes more comfortable in her new life, venturing out in the neighborhood at a soccer match she befriends Rudy Steiner, a boy who falls in love with her. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, words are used in an extremely powerful way. The characters within this novel are impacted negatively and positively by the words that are spoken. In the book, words help to express who the characters are by showing how they interact and respond to them. I have learned that words can be encouraging and uplifting for the characters. They can be used to learn important lessons that can help a character to better understand their life. However, on the other hand, characters in the novel are also put down and hurt by the words that are spoken to them.
Frank Herbert understood that thinking about one’s mortality “is to know the beginning of terror,” but knowing that one is mortal “is to know the end of terror.” Markus Zusak, author of The Book Thief, weaves the tale of “a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist fighter, and quite a lot of thievery” (Zusak 5). This fictional account of World War Two illustrates the importance of words, bravery, and love. Moreover, it divulges the truth behind life: death. Throughout the book, she meets many people including the Mayor’s wife, Isla Hermann, and Max Vandenburg, a Jew who is hiding from the Nazi’s in the Hubermann’s basement. Although Liesel’s life is filled with death and loss, she ends up surviving an air raid on her street and after the war, she is reunited with Max who survived the Nazi death camp.
