In the year 1973, is the year the world became modern and new. This year has a great significance and effect on the world because it was the year the invention of the cellphone (a portable device that can make and receive calls anywhere at any time) came about. Even though it was invented that year it wasn’t until 1983 in which it became available to the public to buy and own. In the year 2006, the number of cellphones that were sold was one billion worldwide and the number continues to rise with each passing year. With that said, as the years went by the cellphone went from a communication device to a helpful device that many cannot live without today. It is so helpful that it is used to save lives during emergencies. And the world is full of emergencies and we depend on tools to help us during them. A particular tool that is very useful during these tragedies is the cellphone, many will claim that a cellphone is not useful however they are a vital help in many emergency cases. A huge number of the world’s population has health problems. Some have medical treatment and other’s do not, but some may never know they have a health risk and/or problem. They are in danger of their lives so without help of professional’s what would they do in a time of a health related emergency? The cellphone talked about above can be used in situations like this. For example, a man in his late 60’s living alone and has a health problem related to all the unhealthy habits he has had in the past. After a while of sitting on the couch watching TV, he notices a pain in his left shoulder, keep in mind the man lives alone. The man ignores the pain but the pain becomes more intense and he feels a shortness of breath and a pain in his chest as well. So ... ... middle of paper ... ..., at any time, and in any form. They can be alike or exactly the same as written above. They can happen differently but the matter of fact is that cellphones help a lot during emergencies. Also just because you haven’t had an emergency yet; don’t think it won’t happen at all. This will advise you all to go and buy a cellphone; they are remarkable feats of technological engineering that can save your life. Work cited Cohen, Elizabeth, and John Bonifield. In the article entitled, “Our Cell Phones Ourselves”, Christine Rosen describes how cell phones have changed the way we communicate. Rosen tells the readers the main purpose for cell phone use in the past, versus present day. Her purpose is to make society aware of how cell phones have influenced our lives in order to inspire change as to how we view our cell phones. Rosen directs her writing to everyone in the present day by describing the negative results of cell phone use and how it impacts our lives and those around us. Without a doubt, cell phones are going to be a part of our world, but it is the responsibility of every cell phone owner to exercise self control and understand that a cell phone is nothing more than a device.
In the article “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves”by Christine Rosen published by W. W. Norton in 2004, she explains about how technology came about and is now taking over today’s world. Just by walking down the street today, it is visible that in everybody’s hands there is a

However, they could also save your life. Today, cellphones make it a lot easier to get help. If you are in trouble and need help all you have to do is say “Siri, call 911” on your cell phone. Instead of going to the police office after an incident you can report it while or even before it happens for immediate help. It wasn’t always that easy though. We used to not be able to get help before cell phones. “We had to literally call for help from our own voices instead of a cellphone” said marc Bodnick from /www.quora.edu/ they can be easily used for natural disasters, being attacked, or health emergencies as
A common theme is taking place where as people feel that cell phones are starting to take over others daily lives. Many people go through their day to day lives not even relizing how often they are on their cell phones. In the article, “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves” the author Christine Rosen talks about how cell phones are starting to become a necessity in every way towards peoples lives. Rosen talks about both the good and bad effects of cell phones and how they have changed the way in which we work our daily life. Although I think cell phones can be necissary, the constant need for use could be the beginning of how cell phones will take over our every day lives.
The cell phone is a great thing. Did you know that about 90% of the population owns a cell phone(Madrigal, Alexis C)? Our society is affected greatly by the use of cellphones in such ways as; sleep deprivation, communication, and Distraction. There are many things that the cell phone is good for but there are just as many negatives that come from them, if not there are more. The number of people who own cell phones has gone up about 27% since year 2004(Madrigal, Alexis C).
Cellular phones are a phenomenon that has engulfed people in the nineties. They have become a common occurrence whether you are waiting in line at the super market or in a movie theatre. One professor at Murray State University said, “Many students are carrying them, I had a student get a call in the middle of a test last semester.” Although many people have accepted the thought of carrying a telephone wherever they go, others have not taken the onslaught of cell phones quite so easily. Cell phones have become part of everyday life, and with the dramatic changes that have been made, there is no sign of their existence diminishing. Today, cellular service is available in all 306 Metropolitan Statistical Areas across the country and all of the 428 Rural Service Areas.
According to Rosen, the main reason why people acquire a cell phone is because of security. After the tragic event that occurred on September 11, 2001 in the United States cell phones started to play an important role in our lives. Rosen states that after this e...
Many people in today’s society rely on technology to help us with our daily lives and help us stay connected to family, friends, and other people. The advancements in today’s cell phone technology is very complex and made to be efficient for their owners, allowing them to surf the net and IM message people instantly. Cellphones in particular have developed very fast in the past 15 years. From my childhood, cell phones have evolved from the old school Nokia bricks that allowed texts, calls, and simple graphic games, to todays I-Phones that have higher computable capabilities than some computers. In the United States alone, there is an estimated population of around 297 million people, and 197 million people are subscribed to cell phone companies (Starr). With so many people in today’s society with so much power and opportunity in the palm of their hands, we shouldn’t forget that “With great power comes great responsibility” –Voltaire.

Despite the short amount of time since the introduction of the smartphone, the rapid development of the software and technology has had a tremendous effect on the everyday life in society today. The concept of communicating through a telephone was developed in the 1870s. Devices to transmit speech electrically were designed by Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell, but Bell's design was patented first. On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell achieved one of his greatest successes in the making of the telephone. This brought upon a major change in communication and gave leeway to the improvement of the telephone in the days to come (Bellis, 2013b). During the 20th century there were many innovations regarding the telephone. In 1973, the first call from a portable phone was made Martin Cooper, who was a Motorola researcher and executive at the time. Since its inception, the advancement of cell phones has been exponential (Bellis, 2013a). As a result, cell phones have changed how society works in today's world. Many people lack the insight of how cell phones, or in this case, smart phones, affect the people that use them. So the question is, how is the evolution of smart phones impacting our society?
...in the 1970’s and shows no signs of slowing down. The opportunities and possibilities this technology has provided are endless and are on a constant rise. Cell phones have provided economic growth and millions of jobs. This technology has come with its own share of moral issues, but nothing that can’t be prevented by teaching awareness and by using caution when utilizing a cell phone. The positives of this technology has created far outweigh the negative side effects, and in my opinion the social impact this technology has had on this world has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Cell phones have changed from an item of luxury to an everyday necessity for some people. Twenty five years ago, a phone was just a way to contact someone. Mobile phones have become one of the most common tools of communications for both young and old. Cellular devices have redefined relationships and social conduct, and transformed the daily lives of many individuals. Cell phones no longer function just as a communication device. Today it has many other uses. Cell phones are used for games, calculators, texting, calendars, social sites, and pictures. In addition, there are many apps that one can download on a phone. Mobile phones help us keep track of our lives.
Every day of our lives, we watch as technology advances in leaps and bounds, so it was only logical when the cell phone came into existence, it would also be necessary to develop ways for a phone to be more than just a phone. With the explosion of the internet age people needed a way to bring their computers on the go, one that could fit in the palm of their hand. Whether it be checking emails, updating social networks or even playing games, smartphones seem to do it all. There is, however, a dark side to every technological advance that is made, to everything that makes our lives more convenient. Smartphones are not only an enormous distraction in our lives but are also known to cause health problems in those
