Music is an art form that has been around since humans were created. All over the world music is played in many different forms and styles. As early as the 1950s, a new style of music was being created in the United States, one that would forever change the world. Not only would this music bring a completely different sound, but it changed the way people acted, dressed, and even their lifestyles. This new style of music became known as rock and roll, and while no one person created it, many artists have added their own unique inputs and helped shape music into what it is today. Rock and roll branches off and has many genres all to which owe it as the roots. Without the contributions of every artist who has performed, the style would not be what it is today.
One artist who contributed to rock and roll and helped change some of the image of the music was Joan Jett. “Joan Jett, born Joan Marie Larkin on September 22, 1958, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA, spent her childhood on the move before developing her love of Rock & Roll in California” (Joan Jett). Jett received her first guitar when she was 14 years old and was always interested in writing. Once Joan finally moved to California, she often hung out at a popular club for teens and became inspired by the music there. At the age of 15, Joan joined the band The Runaways and wrote the song “Cherry Bomb” (Joan Jett Biography). Joan Jett later went on to form her own band, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and establish herself as one of the most influential women in rock and roll history. Today, Joan Jett still tours and produces music and is a household name for rock and roll fans.

Joan Jett, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Eminem all helped make an impact and shape rock and roll history. These artists helped break down gender barriers, race barriers, and create new styles of music as well. No matter how big or how small, everyone has the opportunity to change history, one day at a time.

Ella was born in Newport News, Virginia on April 25, 1917. When alled “The First Lady of Song” by some fans. She was known for having beautiful tone, extended range, and great intonation, and famous for her improvisational scat singing. Ella sang during the her most famous song was “A-tiscket A-tasket”. Fitzgerald sang in the period of swing, ballads, and bebop; she made some great albums with other great jazz artists such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Louis Armstrong. She influenced countless American popular singers of the post-swing period and also international performers such as the singer Miriam Makeba. She didn’t really write any of her own songs. What is music? Music is a very broad word that can mean and reflect several and different points of view. I don’t know about you, but to my understanding music is freedom of speech in the expression of feelings and emotions. Just like the old blues singers whom she idolized, Janis will remain firmly etched into the memory of all those who were there during her time at Rock's Pantheon. This memory has also been passed down to a whole new generation, who are at last appreciating records by an artist who could sing without state-of-the-art technology. Her Greatest Hits Album still tops the charts on the American Billboard, and numerous compilation albums have been released since her death, including the box-set "Janis". “Music can change the world because it can change people.” Over time, music has evolved to become as different as to when we first came to know it. Music has traveled through time as far back as 500 B.C to as current as today of 2014. It was used to soothe the soul, and speak for the unspoken from small social issues to civil rights movements, music was there to express what we felt back then and what we feel now. Artists such as James Brown, Sam Cooke, Pete Seeger, John Lennon, and Bob Dylan made it possible to express their feelings towards different controversial situations presented at the time through song which, I believe, helped society stay strong along the way.
Throughout our history, music has constantly been influenced by trends of its time, reflecting social, economic and political changes. On the other hand, music has defined the culture and social events or leading them to social revolution. For instance, guys like Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder greatly contributed to social events. Such leaders and musical revolutionaries have existed throughout history.
Music can be traced back into human history to prehistoric eras. To this day archeologists uncover fragments of ancient instruments as well as tablets with carved lyrics buried alongside prominent leaders and highly influential people. This serves as a testament to the importance and power of music, as well as its influence in society. Over its many years of existence, music’s powerful invocation of feelings has allowed it to evolve and serve many purposes, one being inspiring change. American journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson once said, “Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel.” This fuel is the very things that powers the influence of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society, that author Glenn C. Altschuler writes about in his book, “All Shook Up – How Rock ‘n’ Roll Changed America.” Between 1945 and 1965 Rock ‘n’ Roll transformed American society and culture by helping to ease racial integration and launch a sexual revolution while most importantly developing an intergenerational identity.
While going through our history of rock and roll course, one thing has become apparent, and that is that music brings people together. Sometimes it takes music to get a point across, and our world has endured a lot of social and a cultural change, which is how we music today. Just like our world is evolving, music is the same way. When a baby is born until the day it dies, it has evolved internally and externally and that is the same way I view the history of rock “n” roll. Rock and Roll has the most incredible history. Before there was rock and roll, there was blues. Most people think rock music started with Elvis Presley, but he didn’t record his first single until 1953. The first recorded song described as “Genuine Rock-and-Roll” was “Rocket ’88” by pianist Ike Turner and singer Jackie Brenston in 1951. Rock-and-Roll music in the 1950’s was described as a mixture of jazz, blues, country, and has a stronger guitar, bass, and drums. Even though some people feel Pop has the best history, Rock and Roll really does. It has actually impacted more people’s lives than any other genre, it unites people from all over the world in a positive way, and influenced media culture by breaking down walls no one else had.
Many people and many styles of music influenced Rock and Roll. The styles included Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Bluegrass, Boogie-Woogie, and Rockabilly. Each was a major factor into the introduction of a new style of music called Rock ‘N’ Roll.
Leibovitz's big ticket to celebrity photography was probably in 1975 when she photographed the Rolling Stone's on tour. She then became the famous band's official photographer. Her famous trail of celebrity portraiture has started. Meanwhile, Andy Warhol became another of Leibovitz's employers as he used her talent in his "Interview" magazine. It was a chance of fate that Warhol picked her as Leibovitz was his second choice for his particular subject.
It was also kind of difficult for me to explain rock & roll specifically, because it contains many of the elements of the different genres from some of the earlier music we studied. I just know that rock & roll wouldn’t have become what it is today, if it were not for our musicians in the past which has allowed us to learn and grow from them.
