What is the difference between effective or ineffective communication skills when working with children, this essay is determine to find out the appropriate ways to communicate with children by analyse, the video clip ‘Unloved’ by Tony Grison, where a young White British girl aged 11 was taken into care, due to her father being abusive towards her and mother not wanting to see her.

Firstly, I will analyse, reflect on the communication skills used by Vicky a White British, female, aged 31, who was a support worker in the children’s home. Vicky’s objective was to take Lucy out in her car to the shopping mall to buy her some clothes, further Vicky’s aim was to help Lucy feel relaxed and get her mind off the situation. Furthermore, Lucy was interviewed by Jackie, who was African carribiena female aged 46 and was a social worker, the interview took place at a children’s care home.

This was the first session for Lucy with her social worker, where Jackie’s objective was to do her job by completing the paper work by questioning Lucy, but her aim was to obtain much information as possible from Lucy and whether or not the interaction with Vicky and Jackie was a positive or negative outcome for Lucy only further analysis can determine this.

Main Body

When Vicky was driving the car the two way communication between Lucy and Vicky was constant this is known as ‘exchange of information’ or messages (Lefevre, p43, 2010). The background noise in the car was a form of barrier between them however, this does not cause miscommunication in their conversation, and there are many distractions that can cause misunderstandings between two individuals when they are having a conversation such as poor lighting, fear, mistrust. (Lefevre, 2010)

The relaxed body language Vicky has adapted also indicates openness, kindness, genuineness reflects in her eyes, while she maintains eye contact on some occasions with Lucy, Adler and Rodman (2003) mention that the eyes are the most noticeable, when communicating and have a very powerful impact. Vicky can be seen as liberal individual because she encourages freedom of communication further her use of dress code, body language indicates this. Vicky’s paralinguistic tone was soft and friendly but, her facial expressions bring out warmth such as when she’s smiling and turning her head towards Lucy. Thus, gives Lucy the indication by judging her verbal and non-verbal meta -messages, that she can confide in Vicky and her views will be heard.
