Introduction
Institutions of distance education started with a similar focus, to bring higher education to students who are unable to participate in a traditional brick and mortar school setting, however these schools are in no way cookie cutter images of each other. This paper is intended to compare and contrast the University of South Africa (UNISA) and that of the British Open University (OU) to investigate the similarities and differences between an institution based in a developing country, UNISA, to one based in a developed country, the OU.
The University of South Africa has the distinction of being one of the oldest institutions catering to students who wished to participate in education but were forced to do so unconventionally (Peters 2010). The British Open University opened in 1969, is one of the

For many years UNISA continued as a testing facility where student who were working on credits at universities such as Oxford and Cambridge could take exams and verify their credits( UNISA, The history 2013). UNISA changed their focus in 1946 when Professor van der Walt was tasked to determine if correspondence education was a viable option for the institution( UNISA, The history 2013). Within ten years UNISA morphed into a separately functioning university offering correspondence courses in which capacity it continued through the 1970’s (UNISA, The history 2013). Having the ability to be self-functioning allowed UNISA to service students throughout South Africa who were under apartheid rule and unable to attend traditional institutions. In “Can You Be Educated from a Distance?” by James Barszcz, the author attempts to pinpoint the negative aspects of distance education compared to traditional classrooms. At the beginning of the article, he first describes the basic format of online courses, which results in a vast minimization of face-to-face communication of students with instructors. He then touches on some of the beneficial qualities of online education, and the reasoning for its quickly growing popularity among students and schools alike. In the world of education, modern society and technology have revamped our ideas of what might be considered a traditional way of gaining education. Face-to-face courses and online courses are both similar and different in relation to the content of courses, student-professor and peer relationships, class participation/interaction and effective methods of both teaching and learning. Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This still is, and always will be an accurate statement because it does not matter how your education is obtained; in the end, knowledge is power.
The technological frontier marks one of the last chapters in the development of American society. We have survived the cultivation of land, ranging from the first exploration of Christopher Columbus to the last expeditions of Buffalo Bill and the Wild West. Now, as there is no longer any land to explore, we must focus our attention on the rapidly increasing technological age. Without a doubt technology has blazed a pathway to a new and unmapped educational frontier. This frontier is pioneered by a completely new academic system: distance learning. The "distance learning" frontier features education of students from outside the traditional classroom setting through the use of technology. For example, quizzes are taken online, classes are taught over televisions, and degrees are earned on the Internet. Although this new and unexplored path has vastly expanded our academic horizons, just like the West expanded our country, we must not travel into the frontier without nurturing it first. In order to fully utilize technology we must cultivate the technology frontier in order to tame its communicational dangers.
Reda (2015) states “If we want to see the world as a just and fair place where everyone is given equal opportunities, education is what we require. Education is a must if we want to do away with the existing differences between different social classes and genders. It opens a whole world of opportunities for the poor so that they may have an equal shot at well-paying jobs.” Creating education in a democratic state has been aimed by many states, theorists, philosophers and so on.
