Describe the events that brought the U.S. into World War I. Explain the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles. What mistakes were made? There were many reasons that the U.S. was brought into World War I. With the assassination sparking the start of World War I, the U.S. didn’t enter the war right away. In fact, the U.S. waited about 3 years to enter the war. They wanted to stay neutral and thought that the war was none of their concern. Shortly after the start of the war, Woodrow Wilson declared a policy of neutrality. They wouldn’t be involved on any side in the war, but would offer loans, trades, and sell weapons to both sides. The U.S. stayed neutral up until 1917. They entered the war for many reasons, but some events were the real causing factor of the U.S. entering the war. The main reason was because of the Germans. Britain set up a blockade to turn back any vital supplies heading to Germany. President Wilson wasn’t happy about this, but didn’t take any major actions. In 1915, the Germans had a way to stop the blockade and destroy vital supplies heading the the Allies. The Germans used U-boats to make all this happen. In 1915, Germany declared the sea around Britain a war zone. The Germans were allowed to sink the ships but had to spare the lives of all people on board. On May 7th, 1915, German U-boats sank the Lusitania without any warning. It killed 128 Americans. President Wilson sent notes to germany demanding that they stop unrestricted submarine warfare. In August 1915, Germany again sank a ship. It was called the Arabic and two americans were killed. Germany said they would spare lives from then on. In march 1916, they went against what they said and destroyed yet another ship called the Sussex. It left many Americ... ... middle of paper ... ...successfully. The German forces retreated away from Verdun. The Germans were put into defensive and French took the offensive. Into December 1916, the forts were rebuilt and there were no major advantages gained by either side. Mobilizing a Nation: America’s Entry Into World War I. Works Cited Missing Woodrow Wilson delivered his now-famous War Message to Congress on April 4, 1917. Four days later, Congress declared war and the United States became a formal partner in the war to end all wars. As the Wilson administration discovered, however, declaring war and making war were two very different propositions. The former required only an abstract statement of ideals and justifications and a two-thirds Congressional majority; the latter required the massive mobilization of virtually every sector of American society - military, industrial, and economic, as well as public opinion.
On April 2nd 1917, President Woodrow Wilson of the United States of America, ??went before Congress and called for a declaration of war. Both the House and the Senate voted overwhelmingly in favor of going to war with Germany.?# This was an act that led to much resistance among the American people. Not four months earlier the American people re-elected President Wilson, partly because of his success in keeping the United States out of this European war. However, a series of events, such as the Germans continuing submarine warfare and the attacks on five American ships, led President Wilson to sever diplomatic relations with Germany and send the United States into what would be labeled as World War I. As a result of the war the
World War 1 was a war that lasted from 1914 to 1918 and was a war that involved and was molded around alliances. This war in Europe would eventually turn into a global war that would involve 32 countries. United States involvement was crucial to the outcome of World War 1 and made a serious impact in our country. Both positive and negative effects were felt by Americans during and even long after the war. Mixed feelings were felt from many Americans for entering the war that would affect society.
In conclusion, I think that the U.S had both economic and democratic purposes for entering World War 1. One sole reason for entering is not a valid enough reason, nor was there only one. Democracy across the world was jeopardized and the U.S also saw that it could eventually make a profit from it. Overall, the U.S’s involvement played a key part in the war. I believe that entering was a good choice especially because it ultimately helped the Allies
The German’s unrestricted submarine warfare was the main reason for the U.S. to enter war. Wilson had tremendous support from Americans. The Germans had to be stopped. The attacks came without warning killing many innocent people (Winter and Baggett, 1996). The Germans sank numerous ships including our own. The most famous ship sunk was the Lusitiania. Aboard that ship 128 Americans were killed (http://www.angelfire.com/in3/wilson/wilson.html). The Lusitania was torpedoed without any notice. The Lusitania sunk in 18 minutes killing a total of 1198 people (http://www.poltechnic.org/faculty/gfeldmeth/chart.ww1.html).
World War I, a military conflict, began as a local European war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia in 1914. It was transformed into a general European struggle by declaration of war against Russia, and eventually became a global war involving 32 nations. Twenty- eight of these nations, known as the Allies and the Associated Powers, and including Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United States, opposed the coalition known as the Central Powers, consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Bulgaria. World War I, was not only a dispute among nations, but also affected thousands of people from all over the world, including African Americans, women, and even business and economic changes. African Americans endured a great amount of racism during the war, especially from the military.
The United States was not fighting in World War I until April 1917. Prior to the US entering the war, President Woodrow Wilson ordered a proclamation of “strict and impartial neutrality” because he was horrified by the amount of casualties the war brought. This proclamation allowed Americans to sell goods to countries in war, but seemingly they favored the Allies and America eventually declared war on Germany in 1917 for many reasons. One reason Wilson requested a Declaration of War, was because of the economy. American banks were giving huge loans of money to the Allies, and if they did not win, America would not get their money back. Putting this into consideration, bankers were influenced to start a war with Germany, the other side of
"He Kept us Out of War" (World War I Quotes). This quote was a democratic slogan stated during the election of 1916 on behalf of President Woodrow Wilson. This slogan makes an attempt to refer to the good leadership qualities and decisions that President Wilson made to keep the United States of America out of the war and that is why he should be elected again to serve as President. Though this made a valid argument to show that Wilson was smart to keep us out of war, many events took place that continued to anger the U.S. which eventually made them declare war on Germany on April 6th, 1917 (World War I). In doing this, they broke their policy of non intervention. The United States held out of the Great War for so long because of economic reasons, their policy of neutrality, and to avoid the morbid trench warfare (America). However, the United Stated eventually entered the war because of Germany sinking several U.S. passenger ships, and the publication of the Zimmerman telegram (World War I).
One pro to entering WWI was that the Germans could now be stopped for what they were doing. After the Lusitania was sunk, and hundreds of American’s lives were lost, America had really no other choice but to go in and stop the Germans on their massive tirade. Along with the Zimmerman telegram telling Mexico to invade the United States, American needed to enter the war to shut down this German onslaught. Another pro is that the United States could possibly gain land by entering the war. Luckily enough for them, they were able to gain land. In 1917 America purchased the Virgin Islands. With the US and other countries gaining land, they were able to set up things such as military bases in this new land they obtained. This also h...
In conclusion, when World War I began in 1914, the United States declared neutrality; however, in 1917 they broke neutrality and declared war. The question for many is, why did the US wait so long and what eventually made the US get involved in this global conflict? The reasons for the United State’s neutrality were George Washington’s Farewell Address, the Monroe Doctrine and the strong belief of pacifism on the war around the United States. After the events of the unrestricted submarine warfare, and the Zimmerman telegram, the United States broke its neutrality. In 1917 Woodrow Wilson said “The world must be safe for democracy.” This quote meant that in order to maintain democracy around the world, all threats to democracy must be ceased. During World War I Germany was a threat to democracy so the United States broke its neutrality and stopped it.
That being the case, the United States entered World War I not because of Germany's aggression but for the opportunity to help protect the rights of smaller nations and end international militarism. The effectiveness of American intervention had both a positive and negative effects. The United States aided in winning the war and helping smaller nations gain independence . The nationalism surged in Germany helped create the cause of the second war. American intervention helped play a pivotal role in the future because of the impact that it had on World War I. America understands that the world can be a much safer place if they can get involved and help other countries create their own government.
There are many different pros and cons for the United States entering World War 1. Some can be argued but there is a couple that we know about for sure and were good and bad reasons for entering the war.
Even though Wilhelm the Crown Prince of Germany once said "Certainly diplomatic dexterity can, and should, postpone the conflict for a time, and at times disentangle the difficulties. Certainly all those in authority must and will be fully conscious of their enormous responsibility in the grave hour of decision. They must make it clear to their own minds that the gigantic conflagration, once enkindled, cannot be so easily or so quickly extinguished." (Doc B) This can be taken as alliances help resolve tensions and ensure peaceful times. World War 1 was driven by Mutual Alliances instead of it being driven by the best interests of the nation or country like it should have been. Because General von Moltke [head of the army] said: I believe war is unavoidable; war the sooner the better. But we ought to do more to press to prepare the popularity of a war against Russia. The Kaiser supported this. Tirpitz [head of the navy] said that the navy would prefer to see the postponement of the great fight for one and a half years."(Doc E) Which can be taken as how some areas wanted to go to war because it would be better finically better for the country if they won, also it has the chance for countries to expand. And For example, In case one of the High Contracting Parties should find itself at war with a fourth Great Power, the two others shall maintain towards it benevolent neutrality and shall devote their efforts to the localization of the conflict."(Source A) Meaning that although war is generally good for the economy and even though the other powers that be didn’t start or help with a war they still had to help out with it.
Should America have gone to war? In August, 1914, Germany and Russia went to war after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and Hungary. Great Britain and France allied with Russia but America did not take part in the war. America’s goal was to stay neutral. But, one day in 1917, it was announced that we were going to war against Germany. Why should we go to war? What supports our reason for going to war? The facts presented will show why America should have joined World War 1.
Prior to World War I, the United States was concerned with reform at home. When the war began, the United States decided to stay neutral up until the Zimmerman Telegram. The Americans tried to stay neutral for three years in order to be able to keep trading. Woodrow WIlson, also, was aware of the large amount of immigrants who came from other nations that were already in war. Wilson’s desire to stay nonpartisan failed as America drew closer to Britain and France. The “true spirit of neutrality”(Doc. A) was not true after all. The United States went into war on April 6,1917.
