Before my fascination for the media world developed I like everyone else was subconsciously a part of it. TV news, magazines I read, commercials I watched and video games I played in my spare time, have all given me the urge to understand the concepts involved in media communication. The media and the world it creates around us is always there whether we are aware of it or not. Becoming a media student was like learning the tricks of the trade, being let in on all these secrets and I loved knowing why the media did things and how they accomplished them. By studying media at degree level I feel I will be able to enhance my interest for the subject as well as expand my current knowledge and be able to gain new skills. Throughout the years, media has advanced along with technology. They now range in sizes, small to large, and weight, heavy and light. The means of communication we have used evolved from newspapers to televisions, social media, and the list goes on. They aid people in keeping us connected and keeping them informed of new products and of the environment. Media is an important part of the lives of neighbors, friends, family members, and the rest of the world. The ‘media effects’ model has been classified as a rudimentary argument that isn’t taken seriously amongst modern day Media Scholars. The origins of the model can be found in Frederic Wertham’s ‘Seduction of the Innocent’ (1955) articulating that media texts produce cognitive dissonance, causing audiences to have a shift in their actions and thoughts. However, contemporary critics believe that the model is limited as the experience of media is much more complex and informed by a number of diverse factors. The Audience studies approach is far more applicable towards the complexity of media texts, as it portrays a consideration and analysis of reactions and behavioural activity of individuals.

Having media literacy is so important because it not only allows people to be more involved in their community, but it also gives people the knowledge they need to access credible and reliable information that can be used for many different reasons. As developments in media continue to progress, the need for media literacy will only continue to grow. Soon it will be a requirement in schools to educate all students on media literacy if it isn't already. Media has revolutionized the world in which we live today, film and television has swept advanced countries of the world, evolving into a way of expression and creativity. When I wonder about all the available opportunities in this profession, I find the thought extremely exciting and wish to be a part of the media community. I hope I will express this through my personal statement, by showing my drive, commitment and suitability to attend this subject in further education at University. While at South Cheshire College I studied a Level 3 BTEC in Creative Media Production, I realised how dependant the world has become on the creative media industry and I believe that there is always something new to be learnt.

Media is one of the many ways of communication that is used to receive and deliver information to influence people across the world. The use of media is communication being advertised through televisions, radios, internet, magazines and newspapers.
The study of Media and communications has developed through various social, cultural, political and academic contexts. In different periods media pay attention and give a priority to new approach and how these approaches make sense of the world that we live in. Media and communications took an important place in movements. In all fields like Marxism, Culture studies, Feminism, Structuralism, Subculture and Postmodernism, media had power and was an element which influenced society. Thus, how have media and communications spread in the last centenary?
Before I had attended this module, my biggest aim was to understand how we communicate with each other and how we adapt our speech to fit the situation we are in. As I am combining Communication, Media and Culture with Film Studies, I wanted this module to help me build my confidence so that in the future, I can pitch my film ideas confidently. It was important for me to develop my communication skills as this would enable me to express myself clearly and concisely.
