School Shootings: The Problem Of School Shootings

Twenty- six lives lost in less than three minutes? This was a record for school shootings that was set on December 14, 2012 during the Newtown shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. School shootings have met their highest point in U.S. history in the year of 2012. The rise in these tragedies has caused schools to advance and develop new ways to keep schools safer. Even though many things have been done to improve safety conditions, some feel these improvements are not enough. Many efforts have been made to protect schools to prevent major school shootings that have occurred in the 21st century but many individuals believe these methods are not addressing the problem.

Crime in the 21st century has ranged from incidents such as cyberbullying to mass public shootings. These crimes differ in the amount of people killed and affected by it but are still each important. Even though there having been several types of crimes committed in the 21st century, one of the major crimes that have increased is school shootings. School shootings have happened hundreds of times through history but in the last century the happenings have increased and become more massive. These shootings have become very controversial over the past ten years.

School massacres have occurred all throughout history but have become more frequent and massive in the past century. School shootings have ranged from having one student injured to thirty three people killed and twenty five students injured. Some of the school shootings that are high up in deaths and injuries are the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary school, the Virginia Tech Massacre and the Oikos University shooting.

With a one in a million chance of a shooting happening at a campus one might belong to, there is still a chance it could happen. It is important that the nation is aware of this major crime happening around the country. It has changed schools in different ways and given a new environment for students to attend school in. The motives the gunmen may have before committing this crime has been and is still under investigation. Schools are the safest they have been in history and will continue to rise in security levels over the years to prevent these happenings. The amount of deaths that have occurred in the 21st century is devastating but will hopefully decrease in the next couple of years with the creation of new methods to protect schools and campuses.
