1.0 Introduction
The purpose of this report is to study the underground water system in Western Australia and make recommendation to the Minister of the Environment and Water Resource. This report include the source and storage, extraction and the effect of underground water to the environment, types of common contamination in underground water and method to prevent the contamination.
Groundwater is the one of the fundamental source of water in Western Australian environment which fresh water collected at various depth below the ground surface. In Australia about 21% of the water used is derived from groundwater sources. There is considerable variation in groundwater usage between states and territories. For many areas it is either the main or the only reliable water source supporting communities and economic activity (Australian Bureau of Rural Science, 2007). Major developments and water resource demands across Australia, mainly on new resource discoveries and mining operations of iron ore mining in Western Australia is one of the main contributor (National Water Commission, 2012)....
Water is the most relied upon resource on earth and if it disappeared life could not and would not exist on this planet. So if one of our main sources of water in South Australia, The Murray Darling-Basin, becomes unusable then we would need to find the problem and do everything possible to stop it or counteract it. This report investigates on salinity in the Murray Darling-Basin, using the issue question “Is there enough being done to counteract the effects of salinity in the Murray?” as the focus. Salinity is a key significant environmental challenge which the Murray faces and if left unmanaged it could cause serious implications for water quality, plant growth, biodiversity, land productivity, infrastructure and could lead to a loss of a water source that’s critical to human needs. In this investigation five different aspects of this salinity issue are presented and these aspects include what Salinity is and how it has become an issue, what the effects are, how salinity affects the rest of Australia, what can be done and is anyone doing anything and finally what the visions are for the future of the Murray and its salinity levels.

The article, Hidden Waters by Joanne Zygmunt describes how water is used in almost everything in the world. The article begins by stating agriculture soaks up the majority of all water and is depleting the limited supply. Roughly “70 percent of global freshwater withdrawals are for irrigation” (Zygmunt 8). Zygmunt, sates there are many unknown uses of water. For example, A hamburger contains “2400 litres of embedded water” (10). It is also stated the are different types of embedded water, “blue” and “green”. “Blue” is the water used in daily life. “Green” is water that is found underground (Zygmunt 11). The Ogallala Aquifer was found in 1889. Since then, 170,000 wells have been made, just in SW Kansas. If we stop pumping right now it will take hundreds of years to refill. If we use it until it is completely dry, it will take 6,000 years to naturally refill. One of the main reasons the aquifer is drying up so fast is center pivot irrigation, which is used by a lot of farmers in SW Kansas. 50% of the water brought up through the wells to water crops is wasted. Water is being pumped out much faster than the Ogallala Aquifer can replenish, therefore dropping the water levels in the aquifer severely.
The system on a whole has been affected as the surrounding Coorong and Lower Lakes areas are encountering declining environmental conditions including: degradation of swamps, receding riverbanks and irrigation banks, disruption of irrigation usage and the irregularity of ferry services. These environmental issues have an effect on the provision of portable water to Adelaide and regional towns who rely on this water source. With today’s drought situations, it is more important than ever to be aware of the water sources in Wyoming as well as the various uses of the water and the amount of usable water that is available compared to the amount that must be used. This paper will not only inform about those uses and numbers, but also the highly debated HB 19 bill and the four major river basins in the western part of the country that supply Wyoming with it’s water. We will be talking about where and how Wyoming gets most of its surface water every year. Along with surface water, groundwater is also an important supply of water to the area which we count on for the environment, and it is important to try to conserve as much of this moisture as we can.
The Colorado River starts in the Rocky Mountains and cuts through 1500 miles of desert canyon lands of seven US states and two Mexican states to supply water the southwestern US [1, 2]. From early settlement, the basin states have debated and reassigned the water rights to the river; however, all the distribution patterns lead to excessive consumption of the resource [2]. In 1922, the seven states signed into the Colorado River Compact, which outlined the policy for the distribution rights to the water [3], however, this compact was written during an exceptionally wet period, which has shown to be uncharacteristic of the long-term conditions [4]. As the century progressed, the climate cycled into the traditional drier climate and by the 1950s, the river no longer met its delta in the Gulf of California [2]. Coupled with growing populations in the Western US in the late 20th century, the reservoirs and groundwater supplies have seen steady declines from a consumption pattern that is outpacing the system's ability to replenish itself and raises concerns about the future water supply [5].
Climate change has the potential to devastate millions in Australia. Rising temperatures will impact the landscape of Australia by decreasing Australia's forests. Australia is going to have to spend billions of dollars to make sure their safety from climate change. The people in Australia will need to be strong and flexible to make it through this tough time they're going through, and Australia will have to find a way to fix this problem before it's too late. Climate change is something that will affect the entire world and it's not an issue to take lightly. Australia’s solutions are not simple at all and in order for them to work everyone will have to work together. Climate change in Australia will impact the environment, the economy, and the lives of Australians, an example of a solution is to cut down on carbon emissions.

Water shortage in United States is a potential problem. Today almost no one consider how serious the issue is. Water is the main resource of our living; we have it and do not realize how much water we waste. In U.S.A. there are over usage of water in irrigation, agriculture, industry and over usage in residential purposes. According to CBS News report (Strassmann, 2010), average American uses about 150 gallons every day, while Englishmen use 40 gallons, Chinese – 22 and Kenyan - 13 gallons. Strassmann also points out that scientists count, that consumption of water is much more than supply, so that in next three years 36 states will faced the problem of water shortage. Nowadays, Las Vegas, Texas, California, Colorado, Nevada have already run into troubles.
Clean and safe drinking water resources are becoming scarce as the population grows. The world is facing many problems, but the most important thing needed to survive, is water. Water is getting low in many countries, therefore residents are suffering the misfortune of not having the reliable source of clean water. Today many countries are having water shortages meaning rivers, lakes, streams and groundwater are not enough to rely on for supplying water demands.
