For many, being a pilot is a very glamorous job. It does sound like a high profile job, but it is by no means an easy feat. I chose to be a pilot because I wanted to be a globetrotter. I knew that being a commercial pilot is an opportunity to travel to many exciting places. To become a professional pilot, I have trained over 2000 hours. After finishing my training I applied for British airways and trained for nearly one year in the flight simulators of the Boeing 777. Finally, to my delight, the day had come when I would be flying my maiden flight for British Airways. This was the new & most sophisticated airline, the Boeing 777-300ER from London to New York. The journey would usually take 7 hours but the crew has to report for the flight preparation 2 hours prior to the flight. After all the final checks with the ground crew, we gave the green signal to invite the passengers on-board. Once we had all the passengers and their luggage loaded, we taxied to the runway. The weather was miserable in London this morning and there was an excessive amount of water on the runway. Once we a...
T’was the eve of Tuesday, January 28, 2014, where at 8pm, I attended the performance, Boeing, Boeing at the Venice Theater Main stage with my younger sister. Growing up I always wanted to fly airplanes, especially after I visited the Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. After high school with an uncertain future but desiring an education, I started taking classes at a local technical college that specialized in university transfers. Specifically, a university transfer to Clemson University where I joined the ROTC program as a sophomore. After sophomore year, I earned a two-year scholarship to attend Clemson fulltime, followed by a trip to Lackland AFB for field training. As a junior, I earned a navigator training slot, a flying billet that was an answer to my prayers. Upon completion of my degree in Human Resources, I commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and assigned to casual status to await navigator training.
1. The complicated task of piloting an aircraft can be broken into two broad categories. The first is keeping the aircraft flying. The second is arriving at a given destination. The second is always being effected by the first. Unlike a car, small deviation in course can over great distances cause the aircraft to arrive hundreds of miles from the target destination. To successfully accomplish the task, safe arrival, the larger tasks can be sub-divided into three categories. The first is the Procedural Tasks. These are the maintenance task that must be accomplished every time in a certain way at a certain time, i.e. take off and landing checklists. The next is Decision and Judgement Tasks. Problem solving is another way to look at it. The crew will react based on past experience to a given situation. The last is Communications and Resource Management. This is how the crew communicates with each other while problem solving, either poorly or well.
Boeing 787 Dreamliner was first announced to the public in January 2003 with approximated costs of five billion dollars , since the sales of the aircraft were high it was supposed to enter commercial service during 2008 but the building up of aircraft seemed more anticipated than expected , since the management decided to use composite materials as an alternative for traditional metals as composite materials are lighter , stronger , cheaper and also resistance to wild variety of chemical agents including acid rain and salt spray as these are the conditions under which metals suffer , Boeing also shared their views in development of air craft with suppliers which effected in a project significantly more anticipated than expected . More than three years later after the project exceeded the estimated budget at last 787 entered commercial service in September 2011.

At the time of the occurrence it had only 22 flight cycles and 169 flight hours. What could have caused such a new aircraft that had passed all flight testing to already have system malfunctions? Too further complicate matters; this was the first of two similar issues in a 9 day span that caused the eventual grounding of the entire fleet of 787s. Poor design and quality control of components were at the root of the problem. In addition, the FAA had insufficient guidance when certifying the systems’ airworthiness. All these issues combined led to incident that could have been much worse. Fortunately

You looked down at your carry-on bag to make sure you have everything packed up, even though you took nothing out, and headed toward the flight attendant and handed her your ticket. As your walking through the tunnel, the sound of the planes jets put just enough pressure on your body, causing your pulse to increase. “Why are you nervous, you been on planes before”, you ask yourself.
