Unattended Teenagers at the Mall

For my ethnography assignment I chose to study unattended teenagers in Rivertown Crossing Mall (RCM) located in Grandville, MI, where the main focus of my ethnographic essay regards behaviors that unattended teenagers demonstrate, and to make adults with teenagers aware of these behaviors that I encounter while I am working. Although my research is only done in RVT, the behaviors which are presented occur across different states. For instance, according to the New York Post in December 27, 2013: More than 400 crazed teens — who mistakenly thought the rapper Fabolous would perform — erupted into brawls all over Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Mill Basin [Brooklyn] on Thursday at 5 p.m…..troublemakers looted and ransacked several stores as panicked shoppers ran for the exits and clerks scrambled to pull down metal gates. (Sheehan) While other states do not have laws concerning dropping a child in the mall alone, “Some states, such as Minnesota and Delaware, do not permit children under 16 to be in certain malls without adult supervision” (Ipatenco). There are consequences when you leave your juvenile in the mall. One of these risks is the potential for abduction, according to the US Department of Justice (United): “The Law Enforcement Study found that an estimated 115 of the nonfamily abducted children were victims of stereotypical kidnappings and that 90 of these qualified as re-ported missing”. As you can see, it might be unlikely that your juvenile will be in danger of kidnapping with those statistics, but the percentage is not zero, therefore, there is always a possibility.
