Twilight Saga: New Moon and Adolescent Development

“I’d never given much thought to how I would die, but dying in the presence of someone I loved would be a good way to go ”. Anyone who is a true Twihard knows this is from the beginning of twilight when Bella is expresses her feelings. Throughout the movie series we see Bella grow and form friendships with many types of different people. For example Bella’s relationship with Jacob, throughout the movie we see each of them grow and find out things about one another. In this paper I will be discussing the psychology topic of adolescent development and friendships, while relating them to Twilight: New Moon.

New moon starts off on Bella’s 18th birthday. Bella wakes up from a dream where she sees herself as an old woman. She expresses her anger with growing older than her boyfriend Edward Cullen, a vampire who stopped ageing physically at 17. As we know Bella hates surprises and without notice Edward and his family planed a birthday party. While unwrapping a gift Bella cuts her finger and we see Jasper, Edwards’s brother charge at her in an attempt to kill her. Edward then realizes that he and his family pose a threat to Bella so he ends their relationship and the Cullen’s leave Forks Washington.

Edwards’s departure leaves Bella heartbroken and depressed for months. Leaving a void in her life, her father decided to send Bella to her mother but Bella refuses and begins to spend time with her friends again. While seeing a movie with her friend Bella sees a group of motorcyclist and decided to approach them. When she does a reminder of Edward stopping her comes up and she begins to take part in thrill seeking activities. It is here that Bella begins her r...

...ey share much in common. Both subjects have experienced hardships along their paths to individuation. Both have addressed the impact of the forces of social, political and gender oppression on individuals . Both are also inherently interdisciplinary, which means combining two or more fields. Psychology and pop culture are ultimately and genuinely interested in people.

As we can see pop culture and psychology tie into each other is some ways. When watching movies and reading books we can tell that there are aspects of psychology present. With psychology we learn about the mind and behavior of humans, trying to understand why people do what they do. With pop culture we watch and read about different types of people and look at their behaviors. With my topics I feel that the two subjects went together very well. Both had many points that could explain each other.
