Truth, Justice and Reconciliation in Latin America

As the head of the national reconciliation commission in Latin America, I will be addressing the different pathways towards reconciliation. The different pathways towards reconciliation I will make my recommendation off of are the Truth Commissions, Justice, and Forgiveness. Additionally, to support my points and arguments towards the idea that Latin American should move forward with reconciliation is I will be discussing the case studies about Guatemala and Argentina. Drawing upon these case studies about Guatemala and Argentina will allow for me to back up the Truth Commissions, Justice, and Forgiveness pathways. With that said, since all these countries in Latin America are dealing with the effects of this horrible epidemic that happened in the past- in some way, it allows me to further compare the Guatemala and Argentina case studies, to further address my recommendations about reconciliation.

Based on my readings, class lectures, films and discussion I have analyzed the concept of understanding about what a Truth Commission is. The Truth Commissions, is strategy designed for situations in which war crimes and human rights abuses have largely stopped and societies are struggling to come to terms with the tragedy ("Truth Commissions."). The purpose of this strategy is to investigate what really happened in a country by revealing the past wrongdoings by a government and hopefully resolving the conflict. Even though, the Truth Commissions is a good strategy towards revealing a counties horrible past it still has its limitations. The limitations of this strategy are they give a higher priority to fairness and honesty, rather than to the actual responsibility of who had actually committed these crimes, and therefore cannot arri...
