Trusting Management
Abstract
The aim of this research report is to find the relationship between ‘trust in management’ and three variables, ‘intrinsic motivation’, ‘organizational citizenship behavior’ and ‘intent to leave’, as well as to find any impact of cash bonuses on these variables.
Students each had to carry our five surveys. The surveys are filled with questions that can measure the various variables mentioned above. There are 1549 surveys altogether and the participants had to work at least 25 hours, not be a manager and worked in the private industry.
It is found that there is association between ‘trust in management’ and the three variables. It is also found that cash bonuses do not necessarily affect employees and the three variables.
The results show that the more employees trust their management, the more likely they will perform the three variables discussed. It also shows that employees will not perform the three variables better even if they received a cash bonus.
Each student was required to conduct five surveys. The participants had to answer thirty-five questions in total. These questions had been chosen so that the answers are able to provide an indication of the three variables discussed. Question one in the survey ‘I work at my current job because I think that my job is interesting’ is an example of the variable ‘intent to leave’. Question two ‘If I had my way, I wouldn’t let my manager have any influence over issues that are important to me’ is an example of the variable ‘trust in management’. Question three in the survey ‘I help others who have heavy workloads’ is an example of the variable ‘organisational citizenship behaviour’. Question nine in the survey ‘I work at my current job because my job is fun’ is an example of the variable ‘intrinsic motivation’.
Fifty four percent of the participants were male, with fifty four percent of all the participants born in Australia. Most of the participants were in the twenty five or less age group with about forty six percent, with twenty four percent in the twenty six to forty five years old age group and finally twenty nine percent in the forty six to sixty two years old age group. The survey was limited to a maximum age of sixty two.
In the education level criteria, forty nine percent of the participants have completed a university degree or equivalent. Twenty two percent completed a TAFE certificate or equivalent, twenty percent completed a high school certificate and remaining nine completed a school certificate.
Management should share the responsibility with employees to calculate how fast bonuses are generated and earn. This may be a sensible strategy explained by the Vroom 's Expectancy theory; which suggest that people will be motivated to accomplish an objective if they feel it benefits them and also help accomplish the objective. Thus, the employees feel a significant worth of respect, and their sense of liberty increases. Employees, investors, suppliers and customers alike eventually reach a decision point in a relationship when they decide where to place their trust and with whom. Leaders are judged on what they do to win trust, and the sincerity and consistency of their effort to retain it. Leaders win trust by communicating openly and often, having a clear and committed communications policy, strategy and processes, initiating formal and informal communications programs and regularly assessing their own communications effectiveness and that of their team and their organization.

This study examines the performance management and reward strategy used in Unilever to retain and motivate their employees for a long term. Both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards are given to employees to make them loyal and to utilize their skills to further improve the performance of Unilever. Almost all the factors of reward strategies and performance management are discussed and evaluated accordingly. Performance of the employees might be get affected if the rewards are not given to employees, so to motivate them furthermore the Maslow Hierarchy of need theory is also recommended to Unilever to make their employees loyal.
Organizational success is dependent on both leaders and followers. A strong leader “cannot expect others to follow; leaders must provide a good reason for others to follow” (Satterlee, 2013, p. 6). Similarly, effective followers “share a number of essential qualities, including intelligence and self-reliance”, and do not require constant attention or approval (Satterlee, 2013, p. 6). A necessary element in building the foundation for functioning relationships, trust is an “intangible intellectual asset, a skill, and an influencing power” for leaders and followers (Savolainen & Hakkinen, 2011, Abstract section, para. 1). This literature review considers the concepts of leadership, followership, and trust by examining how each is important to organizational leaders, as well as, strategies for implementing within an organization. “A good manager gets others to do what he/she wants them to do. A good leader gets others to want what he/she wants.”
Management spends a huge amount of time to design incentive systems and schemes to motivate their workers and to ensure they work in their best possible manner. Motivating workers by giving them decent pay helps in winning employees heart to make the work done efficiently, significantly and effectively. The most effective way to motivate people to work productively is through individual incentive compensation (Pfeffer, 1998). An attraction of getting more is a powerful incentive to people for high performance. While most people agree that money plays a major role in motivating people, in organizations there is a widespread belief that money may also have some undesirable effects on morale.
People’s behaviour is determined by what motivates them. The aim of this essay is to discuss the essence of the motivation and psychological strengths, its evolution, a brief overview of the key theories of the employees’ motivation and behaviour analysis. The main task is to understand how motivation affects employee behaviour and to clarify the importance of motivation. In this essay I will discuss and produce definitions and examples to answer the main question of what is the driving force and how do people’s needs influence performance at work?
Different facets of organizational behavior were addressed in the three articles reviewed for this project. Pay Satisfaction, Job Satisfaction, and Turnover Intent by Parbudyal Singh and Natasha Loncar examines the relationship between employee position and salary satisfaction and job turnover. The 4 Rs of Motivation by Michael Maccoby suggests a formula from which leaders should pull to motivate subordinates, and Relations Between Leader-Subordinate Personality Similarity and Job Attitudes by Lior Oren, Aharon Tziner, Gil Sharoni, Iafit Amor, and Pini Alon examines the effect the relationship between leaders and subordinates has upon job satisfaction.
