When working in teams, is trust assumed or do team members have to earn trust?
As in all aspects in life involving people’s trust is in no way just given but obtained by earning it. Trust among individuals is dynamic and through similar experience it is earned. Nevertheless, trust cannot be clarified exclusively through the interaction among individuals, but also through incredibly private points of view. We are inclined to trust individuals who we regard as trustable. The assessment about an individual’s credibility or whether or not they can be trusted is none the less still completely subjective. Through our own individual experiences, background, stereotypes, and prejudices is how we look at an individual to determine their trustworthiness.
Team project performance is directly impacted by team member’s interpersonal relationships. Collaboration and project success are effected by working relationships between team members which are believed to be trust based. This is a critical element in establishing a quality team. Trust among the team members is associated with developing teamwork, being committed to the team and all team members being goal oriented when working on a project. For that reason, assuming trust from the very start needs to take place when forming a team.

Trust is a trait one should obtain for the people they know are the most honest. To trust someone means to put ones full confidence and reliability on an acquaintance such as someone one is close with. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus, one of the leading characters put his complete trust in the people trying to tell him what he should believe. Brutus joined the conspirators to help take down Julius Caesar because he believed it was what was good for Rome based on what he was deceived. This resulted in the killing of Caesar and the death of himself and others. Not considering the right kind of trust in someone can lead to very troubling things. Some of the lack of trust stems from the behavior of the team in the past and their lack of transparency. Previously the team had broad ability to do whatever they wanted with little oversight. Now, it has become necessary to understand what the team is doing in greater detail and occasionally question their assumptions. This has put some people on the defensive and has created trust issues. Trust should be earned, but if you loose someone’s trust it is very difficult to earn it back.
In conclusion, we feel as if we built trust in our team. Seeing as how we’re leaders in our own way, we each created a culture of trust among ourselves. Once we got to know each other personally and shared some personal information about ourselves, our families, hobbies, and other interests, that’s when we started to develop a bond and all the trust built up between us. And this paper assessed our group’s 3-5 major strengths and weaknesses and what successful strategies we hope to add to our team to build a more effective team in the future. Thank you for reading.
