1. Description of the Organizational Problem
Problem/Opportunity Description
The area of study for this project will be truck tracking with an outcome which minimizes costs and maximizes efficiencies throughout the fleet of trucks. The end goals of this project are: 1. Locate the correct fleet size which is composed of both internal and external trucks, 2. Re-structure current contracts with external haulers to incentivize these haulers, 3. Integrate technology into fleet to increase efficiencies and automate back office processes.
How do we know this is a problem/opportunity?
In order to meet customer demands as well as keeping trucking costs at manageable levels the correct amount of trucks must be maintained on an ongoing basis. I believe that the best way to do this is to have an internal seasonal fleet of trucks that makes up 80% of the total fleet, with the other 20% being external haulers. By having the larger percentage of internal trucks a business is able to maintain a better level of control of its jobs and people, whereas with external haulers the ability to discipline may be more difficult. Having most of the fleet as part of the parent company also allows for more business-based comradery among employees, which may have a positive effect on the overall business.
A contract for external trucking vendors is another area of focus when building a stronger and more proficient trucking fleet. The most important portion of the contract is obviously the terms of compensation a driver will receive. This amount of compensation must be set at a nominal value that is attractive, but does cost more than the service is worth. The other portion of the contract that must be structured well is the definition of hauling poli...

Huffman Trucking has recently hired a consultant company, Smith Systems Consulting, to design a database that will enable Huffman Trucking to better organize and track the truck maintenance for their fleet. Smith Systems Consulting has done an analysis of Huffman Trucking to develop a basic plan for integrating information into a database. Entities and attributes have been defined by Smith Systems, but the relationships and tables of the database still need to be defined.
The North American transport system is run by several different agencies, each one having its own important part in making it all run smoothly and efficiently . There are also several policies that have been put in place to keep the transportation system working for the good of everyone. The agencies involved keep very good records of all the types of transportation that make up the system, which makes it easy for anyone to be able to see all the different statistics associated with the system. The Freight broker business is another important part of the transportation system, the following paragraphs will tell how all these things work together.

The Riverbend Telephone Company is experiencing growth and had previously tried outsourcing some of its installation work to handle the overflow above its capacity. This was unsatisfactory, and so to accommodate the new customers, RTC needs to obtain a new maintenance truck and crew. It is considering whether leasing or buying the new truck necessary to their operations is the preferable method of investment.

According to the Theorists as groups turn into teams, most conflict happens in the “storming” stage of team development (De Janasz, Dowd & Schneider, 2001). First, one must understand what conflict is. Capozzoli (1999) cites Boulding’s 1962 definition of conflict as “a situation of competition in which the parties are aware of the incompatibility of potential future positions and in which each party wishes to occupy a position which is incompatible with the wishes of the other.” Conflict can be either constructive or destructive to the team and can be created in several ways. Conflict must be analyzed and understood for the team to resolve it.
Founded in 1907 as a messenger company, United Parcel Service has grown into a world renowned provider of specialized transportation and logistics services. This multi-billion corporation enables and manages the flow of goods, information, and funds to over 200 countries and territories around the globe (UPS.com, 2013). Air, freight, oceanic is just a few of the modes that UPS uses to move the flow of goods around the globe. The company structure of UPS entails operations in three segments: U.S. Domestic Package operations, International Package operations, and Supply Chain & Freight operations. It’s just about an everyday occurrence to see an brown UPS truck on the road as we go about our everyday lives, the U.S. Domestic Package operations are comprised of delivery of documents, packages, and letters around the United States. Partnering within a supply chain can prove to be very important in the success of the overall supply chain. Communication within a supply chain that flows freely between partners reduces in-efficiencies such as excess inventory (bullwhip effect), and lost profits. The Supply Chain & Freight operation within UPS entails forwarding and contract logistics operations and UPS Freight. As a freight forwarder they organize shipments from various sources to their final p...

Psychological contract is the unwritten contract that illustrates a set of expectations exists between the individual and the organisation (Sonnenberg et al, 2011). Svensson & Wolven (2010) point out that it can be a relationship between the members of a group, the people who work in the same company, department or organisation, several groups or parties in an organization, etc. It includes the work performance requirement, job security, training, potential development, compensation and subside. Psychological contracts are the mental representation based on belief or perception, so it may help the employees and employers get rid of a complicated employment relationship. For instance, the employees and employers may understand very clearly about the terms and conditions and what they have been agreed upon. The perception of each individual is very important and essential (Ekelund et al, 2010, 1438). Thus, when they work in a high competitive group, it could motivate them to implement their work consciously. Combined with a few exceptions, some researches cite that psychological contract is only regarding to the employee–manager relation and the term that mostly...
