The ecosystem I have chosen is tropical rainforest. In the following paragraphs, I am going to firstly introduced the structure of tropical rainforest in brief, with the second part of the plant ecology and last the diversity within this ecosystem.
Geographical location- basically, tropical rainforest is roughly taking place within the latitude 28 degrees north or south of the equator, concentrated in South America at the same time, scattered in Africa and south Asia. The emergent layer, which is also the highest layer, contains a small number of very large trees, called emergent, reaching heights of 45–55 m.
The canopy is the primary layer of the forest forming a roof over the two remaining layers. It contains the majority of the largest trees, typically 30–45 m in height. Tall, broad-leaved evergreen trees are the dominant plants.
The understory layer lies between the canopy and the forest floor. The understory is home to a number of birds, small mammals, insects, reptiles, and predators.
The forest floor, the bottom-most layer, receives only 2% of the sunlight. Only plants adapted to low light can grow in this region.
Under this distribution, plants grow with different characteristics in order to adapt the environment.
The first plant will be introduced is Gamboge, Garcinia hanburyi Hook.f. , which is a dicotyledonous plant. The leaves are in opposite arrangement. The apex of leaf is obtuse. It grows in tropical area and the fruit is berry typed with a smooth skin on top. The xylem sap is usually used in to put on the wound or being treated to synthesize Chinese herbs. Many variations and species of plants can be found all around the world and in different habitats. These variations and characteristics are due to their adaptations to the natural habitat surrounding them. In three of many climatic zones, the arid, tropical and temperate zone, plants that vary greatly from each other are found in these locations. The vegetation is mostly trees. There are many types of trees, Some of the trees are coniferous trees and deciduous. It is all scattered in the southern part of the Canadian Shield. The forests are all mixed with birch trees, aspen trees, tamarisk trees, black and white spruce trees, willow trees, hemlock trees, pine trees and balsam fir trees. The mixed forests are beautiful in the fall when the leaves of the deciduous trees change color.
Miguel: When you're inside the boundaries of the biome some of the trees and plants that could be found are the Balsam fir, Douglas-firs, the Eastern Red Cedar, Jack Pine, and Birch Tree's. All firs and hemlocks are thick and have waxy needles that prevent water from evaporation. The Balsam Fir is a small medium sized tree that could grow up to 40 to 80 feet tall. The Douglas-firs tree is a little smaller than the Balsam Fir. The Douglas-firs tree grows up to 40 to 60 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide. The Easter Red Cedar is a small tree that grows to be 10 to 50 feet long. The Jack pine grows up to be 27 meters tall. Birch trees can grow in pairs or clusters. Paper birch can grow anywhere from sixty to eighty feet high.
Typically people think that redwood forests are made up entirely of redwoods. But that isn't so--a healthy old-growth redwood forest is a mix of redwoods, deciduous trees, ferns, vines, flowers and wildlife. Giant redwoods are so tall, dense, and so crowded in the canopy, that some ground areas rarely see the sunlight, and little grows beneath these large giants. But whenever a tree does fall by Mother Nature or man, it leaves a gaping hole, that goes noticed.

Furthermore, we study whether the two species co-exist via reciprocal replacement, habitat preference or merely by chance. We believe that habitat preference may be the mechanism of coexistence here and therefore we hypothesize that there will be more American beech tree neighbors as they may represent the most biomass as per our third hypothesis. Thereafter, root sprouting is effective in American beech to give them a greater horizontal growth than sugar maple. Hence, we hypothesize that sugar maple canopies will be less asymmetrical than American beech. Finally, because a nearby canopy may restrict a tree canopy growth in the same direction, we hypothesize that a tree will grow its respective canopy away from its neighboring canopy to receive maximum sunlight.
Tropical rainforests are an extremely unique and diverse ecosystem that are located around the earth’s equator. They once covered roughly 7% of the world, but due to human encroachment that has dwindled to just 2%. It is a highly moisture rich environment that typically receives anywhere between 60 and 400 inches of rainfall annually and average humidity ranges from 70 to 90%.
Because it has a large number of organisms living in a relatively small place, it increases the density of living organisms in one area. Minimal or significant impacts to these ecosystems could affect the balance of the area, effectively ruining the whole ecosystem. The Yasuni National Park possesses very diverse rainforest which significantly impact how the ecosystem functions; yet the the processes of disturbance and succession greatly affect them ("Yasuni National Park, Ecuador", "Ecuador Yasuni ITT Trust Fund" ). a) The Daintree rainforest at Cape Tribulation, in far north Queensland is diverse in many ways. It holds 12 of the 19 primitive plant families in the world (Cairns Today, 2007). The forest covers an area of 1100 square kilometres and is approximately eighty kilometres wide. This dense and luxuriant rainforest has the greatest diversity than any other in Australia and many in the world. The Daintree is also the home of rare and threatened of being extinct plant and animal species. The importance of this ecosystem is the very high. This ecosystem contributes to the overall health of this plant in many ways. The diversity contributes in the breakdown of pollution and helps to control the climate to name a few. This rainforest also is a great ‘carbon sink’. It has many photosynthesising plants and this allows the control of carbon dioxide (CO2). A rainforest is an area of high, mostly evergreen trees with a high amount of rainfall. The biome is the earth’s oldest living ecosystem, being incredibly complex and diverse. The importance of the rainforest, is the huge biodiversity of the place due to the 80 – 90% of species that can be found there, even when it only covers 6% of the Earth’s surface. It is also often called the lungs of the planet, by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen upon which many species depend on. Rainforests also help stabilize the world’s climate and maintain the water cycle by producing rainfall all around the planet. Every year humans are cutting down more and more rainforest all around the globe. The reasons for this deforestation are to have grazing land for cattle, contraction of roads, extraction of energy and minerals and many more. Yet this report will focus on the monoculture of rubber tree plantations on previous rainforest land.
