When I started on this paper I figured all the information I would find out is knowledge I would already know of on this subject, but then I actually found out more new information than I already knew. One day in late November Hayden and I were joking around with Evan and he said a very interesting thing that I will never have guessed he would ever say again. He said, “I just got out of the hospital” we asked why and he said, “Because of my depression.” I never knew even had struggled with depression until he told us he did. So I had to find out if the over use of video games led to his depression. The first question I asked him was when did you first start playing video games, and he answered, “I started playing video games when I was in kindergarten it was on my Nintendo 64 playing Frogger. I asked him besides sleeping and at school at what percentage do you play video games he replied, “65%.” I also went on to ask him if he knew that playing to many video games leads to aggression and depression and if he thought this is why he has been diagnosed with depression. He answered yes to both of these questions. Because of this story it made me think, does certain toys create problems in a child’s future development?
The origin of the word toy is uncertain but according to Harper, in 1300 a toy is meant t0 be an “amorous playing, sport later piece of fun or entertainment.” Today’s definition is an “object of a representation of something familiar, as an animal or person, for children to play with.” The definition of a toy doesn’t say a very fancy and shiny electronic device that effects a child’s development. Toy stores are perfect places for a sociologist to use their sociological imagination. Gendering and racism is thought to be something that is socially constructed as opposed to biologically constructed. Gendering starts during infancy, and around 2 years old children start to internalize these gender differences. I argue that children’s toys help socialize children into gender specific roles. Toy stores, like Target and Toys R Us help us understand what types of toys help to gender children. I will explain how the toys in the toy aisles differ and compare. Not all toys are either male or female, some toys are gender neutral.
I am not saying that a Barbi doll is necessarily a bad thing, besides the fact that some of her outfits are frightening, but I would rather have the life like rocket that can fly a 100 feet up before it returns to the ground. This discussion might appear superficial at first, but there is an underlying problem to why a parent might want to encourage their young daughters to play with a science kit instead of deciding what evening gown Barbi looks best in. A lot of the toys designed for boys might also be used as a learning tool. When a boy plays with legos and starts to create buildings he is developing his creativity. This act could lead him into a career as an architect or engineer. When he is encouraged to play with rockets or a microscope he has the potential of developing an interest in science that could lead him into a career working on satellites.

As children begin to develop and grows, they all are curiosity and learning about the world around them that need to develop their thinking and learning more that included toys. The Purpose of this essay is to discuss how toys impact the gender construction. Toys that can be describe as being toy which are generally suitable for one gender over the other such as wheeled or GI Joe doll for males and dolls or kitchen toys for females. The term gender refers in typical toys where it chooses the appropriate sex. It is very important to know the gender; but the parents are the one who chose the toys for their kids to know if they are masculine or feminine. While many different case studies have been done all over the world, scientists have yet to prove that there is a direct correlation between violent video games and child aggression. Since the start of this quarter, this has been an issue that I have been doing extensive research on. About a year ago I left my job working at ToysRUs and went back to visit a few days ago. Once I entered the store the lay out had stayed the same as always, boy toys on the left and girls in the middle and “uni-sex” toys on the right. After walking through the aisles of the store I never really considered how toys could influence gender roles that could lead up to adulthood.
As a child, our toys were not exactly as gender neutral as earlier times, but also were not as gender stereotypic as the toys in today’s time. The fact that everyone eventually comes into contact with buying toys whether you have kids or you have a friend or family member who have kids which makes this an important topic. Eventually, everyone has to buy a child a present. Would it bother you that all toys are either pink or blue and there is no in between? Or does sticking to what your child is already familiar with and knows the more ideal option when it comes to gender stereotyping with children’s toys? Authors James Delingpole and Eleanor Muffitt both do a good job at arguing both sides to this issue. Although both authors provide valid points throughout each article, about gender stereotyping with toys, James Delingpole clearly was more effective in persuading the audience because he used all three elements; ethos, logos, and pathos to support his idea.
The question is, “Do violent video games influence children to act aggressively?” and “Can repetitive killing train a person to be violent himself?” Although the violence in these video games is fictional, research has proven the violence to lead to more aggressive behavior in children. Violent acts depicted in these games allow young children to believe that killing and fighting is acceptable and fun.
