Introduction
With the development of urbanization, an increasing number of social problems have emerged. These problems will decelerate the urban development, however, there are many ways in which sustainable development can reduce the impact of these urbanization problems. “Sustainable development seeks to improve the quality of human life without undermining the quality of our natural environment” (Adams, W.M. 1999). Actually, sustainable development can partly solve the urbanization problems, for it can reduce the impact of the problems such as traffic jam, housing shortage and severe pollution, but it is difficult to completely solve these problems in a short time.
Traffic jam
Traffic jam is one of the most serious problems of urbanization, almost all the modern cities are facing different levels of traffic jam problems. In general, people can ease the traffic jam and not compromise the quality of life by a policy of sustainable development in two aspects including formulating a more efficient transport pattern and changing the urban construction.
For formulating a more efficient transport pattern, there are some specific strategies. Firstly, government can encourage people to pay more attention to public transit. The actual data about transit use from most cities indicates that transit use is growing in many cities, in addition, some developed cities have been reducing their car use and pay more attention to the public transport (Newman, 1999). Based on the facts that the traffic situation is getting worse day after day and the population is growing fast, a short-term solution is the most appropriate "escape" for the problem. A solution would consist on implementing a rule by the government, restricting the numbers of cars on circulation. The restriction would by applied in car tags, even and odd numbers. The regulation should specify which days odd car tags are allowed to circulate and which days can even car tags are. The implementation of this solution would solve in a short term the large number of cars traveling on Ga. 400. It would not only make people having to find a ride in those "not allowed days" to drive but it would also reduce pollution rates, and make people transport faster to their homes or works. Like I mentioned before, dependence on somebody else's those days that drivers are not allowed to drive would be the only bad side of the solution. People would need to realize that the advantages are greater than the disadvantages.
The problems caused by the urbanization phenomenon also deal with the decreased quality of health care and medicine provision for the mass people in the cities. The negative effects of urbanization are scaring the people, and many of them choose to turn back from the urban places to previous places where they lived. Nevertheless, not everything about urbanization tends to be perceived in the dark light. For example, urbanization brings the growth and development of commercial activities and contributes to the social and cultural integration. For the last 40 years, Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia, has developed from a modest town into a metropolis with a population of around 8 million people today. The increased economic activity, as well as the increase in traffic and yet traffic congestion in the modern road networks due to the growing number of cars have generated additional delays and less road safety. Can anyone imagine that drivers spend a lot of time behind their wheels in Riyadh? Traffic jams are causing people major headaches, and some of them have left the city to find a more relaxed and less congested city. Everyone has been dreaming about driving without being stuck on roads or at traffic lights and reaching their destinations in a timely manner.
From January to October in 2009, there were over 61 cases of over 30-minute traffic congestions, and 12 serious cases, which occurred about 40 minutes to 8 hours in Ho Chi Minh City (qdt. in Quochung). The traffic situation would be more complex in the later months, Mr. Tran, the president of Ho Chi Minh City department of transportation, declared at the meeting of searching methods to manage traffic jam in urban areas (qdt. in Quochung). This number did not mention the under 30-minute traffic jams which happen every day in the most crowded city in Vietnam, even in the off-peak hours. Thus, the traffic congestion is extremely familiar with people who are living, working, studying in there. Each street is full of cars, motorcycles, building constructions, and roadwork; people are easy to get traffic jam in the rush hours. Traffic situation is increasing to a new high-risk level. Spreading urban area to manage traffic congestion well is an extremely important in Ho Chi Minh City because the traffic jam causes air pollution, wastes time and money, which affects society as whole.
Traffic congestion, is one of the major problems faced in the capitals and major cities in most countries. As with the increase in the growth rate, comes the growing demand for the use of transportation. This works with the response to the needs of the community.
We all use vehicles for transportation. People usually go to their desired destination either by driving their own cars or traveling in public transportation. Actually, it might be tough to choose that which one is the best selection for people to travel. Many people choose one of them according to their comfort while traveling and both of them have advantages and disadvantages in different conditions. Public transportation and driving own car both shares differences and similarities in many aspects, such as facility, cost, and comfort as well as traffic jam and accident occurrence.
The traditional approach to lowering congestion in cities is to increase the use of public transport. Motorcycles and motor scooters provide an opportunity to enhance urban mobility because of their smaller spatial footprint. A slight shift in traffic composition from private vehicles such as cars to motorcycles will significantly reduce traffic congestion (Yperman, 2011). Also, motorcycles and motor scooters have small engine capacities and as such result in much less fuel usage and emit lower greenhouse gases when compared to cars.
The Negative Effects of Urbanization on People and their Environment As our world becomes increasingly globalized, numerous people travel to urban areas in search of economic prosperity. As a consequence of this, cities in periphery countries expand at rates of 4 to 7 percent annually. Many cities offer entrepreneurs the potential for resources, labor, and resources. With prosperity, cities also allow the freedom of a diversity of ways of life and manners (Knox & Marston, 2012). However, in the quest to be prosperous, increasing burdens are placed on our health and the condition of our environment.
Of the year the number of vehicles is increasing. In urban communities prefer to use private vehicles to travel than by public transport. This is then further aggravate congestion in urban areas. Afghanistan has suffered from decades of war and conflicts. During these decades of war and due to lack of regular maintenance much of the transportation infrastructure has either been damaged or has deteriorated. This paper presents an overview of the current challenges of transportation in Kabul in particular the traffic jam by using some geographical theories, experiences, and methodologies will propose some policy-oriented recommendations and opportunities for improving the transportation situation. Thus, efforts are made to analyze the problem of traffic jam and its cause and effects. Moreover, this paper explains the history of the problem, nature of the problem, and the reason why government failed to bring change or improve this system and why it has reach to the extent that public is asking for change, and finally some possible solution to this problem along with some feasible recommendations. Furthermore, it will also discuss the demographics of Kabul, the system of roads, the traffic composition and demand, the public transportation system, the traffic regulations, highway safety, transportationsecurity and vehicle emissions. Moreover, Kabul is dealing with some serious cases of traffic jam nowadays and it should be take under consideration both from government and from citizens. There are many problems to deal with such as lack of paved and substandard roads and traffic control devices, lack of traffic lights, lack of public awareness for traffic regulations, no compliance of traffic regulations, lack of enforcement, lack of comprehensive traffic regulation, and distracted drivers.
Most of cities that people live are sequentially growing, daily routine of many people are also adapted for surrounding in the present. A lot of people have to spend most of their time with travelling though long distances to get from one place to another for connecting their businesses or other purposes by transportation. Most people use public transportation such as BTS and MRT to go each places while many people are using their own cars to travel. Thereby, both transportations have the same destination that is taking and moving people. People can choose vehicles from alter reasons depend on how people are responded to their needs by public transportation and private car that are different in convenience of travelling, expenditure of money and security of travel.
