Drug Addicted Babies

Every day there are almost four hundred thousand babies born in the world; 251 babies born each minute. With that said, about one baby is born each hour in the world addicted to illegal drugs. Meaning the mother of those babies was using illegal drugs during pregnancy. Studies have shown that a majority of these mothers didn’t know they were pregnant until they were too far along into their pregnancy to prevent the fetus from being effected. Babies exposed to illegal drugs in the fetus are called “crack babies.” Crack babies are not only born with symptoms of withdrawal, but they can also suffer from other major problems. Many studies were done over illegal drug use during pregnancy proving that the unborn child can suffer severely or even be fatal. Mothers who use illegal drugs while pregnant can cause harmful effects on the fetus.
During pregnancy, a woman has to be careful about what she ingests into her body because what she consumes the unborn baby will also consume. Most women often try to avoid unhealthy food or drinks to ensure that their baby is healthy; along with avoiding certain prescription drugs during pregnancy in order to protect their baby from harm and to prevent complications in pregnancy. On the other hand, there are women who are the less concerned about the health of their baby and more concerned about their own desires. I’m talking about women who are addicted to illegal drugs and refuse to refrain from drugs during pregnancy. Consumption of illegal drugs during pregnancy is harmful to the fetus.

Illegal drugs including cocaine, marijuana, heroin, LSD, and PCP are all drugs that are proven to have harmful effects to the fetus. Some of which have dissimilar effects on the fetus, but they are all detrimental to the unborn baby in some way. Most babies exposed to an illegal drug during pregnancy are born with withdrawal symptoms and have to be weaned; spending several weeks in the hospital. All women should be warned when trying to become pregnant or after becoming pregnant, that using illegal drugs during pregnancy is very harmful to the fetus. Illegal drugs are not only damaging to you and me, but they are dangerous to an unborn baby and can cause major problems for the baby when born. The problems can not only occur after birth, but they can last a life time.
