How Does Beckett Use Time and Repetition in Waiting For Godot to Represent The Never Ending Cycles in Life?
Life is made up of different routines and schedules that are followed by the ordinary human being daily. In ‘Waiting for Godot’, Samuel Beckett uses time and repetition consistently throughout the play to demonstrate how these routines and habits are key elements in the course of life itself. The three main devices Beckett uses are the illogical pass of time, the lack of a past or a future and the absurdity of repetition in both dialogue and actions within the main characters and their surroundings.
Time is ultimately quite important to the story in a metaphorical sense. The passing of time in ‘Waiting for Godot’ is both absurd and illogical. This absurdity is evident in many occasions that are spread out across the entire play. As the first act begins, the reader is told through stage directions that on stage there is “a country road, a tree” and that the time of the day is the “evening”. (Beckett 1). However more information is introduced to the reader when Vladimir states that the tree “must be dead” (Beckett 6). This means there was no sign of life whatsoever during Act I. In the play, the audience is told that the timeline between Act I and Act II is simply a day, however now the tree is described as having “four or five” leaves. Physically speaking, this is impossible considering the fact that the leaves couldn’t have possibly grown in a single day. Vladimir states that “things [had] changed around” the place since ‘yesterday’, since according to him they’d been there the day before. ...and never-ending inaction that occurs in the play. In Act II however, Vladimir sings a song that represents the cycle of life; speaking about how life’s cycle is one journey to death. This is significant because Beckett’s use of the theatre of the absurd was based on non-continuous timelines and never-ending cycles. It is due to this that repetition is key in showing how Beckett expresses the idea of the human’s cyclical life.
Looking at the evidence, we can see that Beckett used many devices and ideas to guide his readers and spectators into discovering that his main idea was to show how his absurdist and irrational tragicomedy really expresses how the human life is built; he uses this to say that life is repetitive and formed by cyclical actions that leave everyone in the same place they started at the end, just like Vladimir and Estragon at the end of the play.
