In today’s society, people are being judged based their ability to embrace themselves in a world where everyone tries to fit in. Although, many of these people differ and become outcasts in society, others are unaffected by society standards and often lead prosperous lives. Tim Burton happens to be one of these individuals. As many people identify Burton as a film director who projects dark yet adventurous pieces of work, his talent has led him to become one of the most famous producers in Hollywood. Burton’s unique style is depicted in his films Alice and Wonderland and Edward Scissorhands, where the protagonist has certain personality traits that are not appreciated in society. For example, in Alice and Wonderland, Alice had a flashback when she had entered the wonderland. While running away from the Bandersnatch, she visualizes herself lying in bed with her father by her side. Alice remembers her father saying “It’s just a dream”, which makes her believe that this journey is just a nightmare. Therefore, the use of flashbacks show not only background information but visual perceptions from Alice’s memories. In that case, flashbacks are displayed in Edward Scissorhands as well. An example from Burton’s film is shown when Edward has a flashback after he accidentally cuts Kim’s arm. Edward visons the inventor giving him an early Christmas present. As the inventor held out prosthetic hands, Edward was blown away by the sight. Although the scene sadden as the inventor fell to floor with no pulse, leaving Edward with scissors still as hands. The usage of flashbacks allows the audiences to see what had happened in Edward’s life before it changed completely.
